I just thought I would share some information as I work with acrylic quite often as a fish breeder; Silicone won’t actually bond to acrylic, only glass… If you tried to use silicone to affix an acrylic plate to a glass plate the silicone will bond to the glass and completely peel free from the acrylic. The better option is to use an acrylic cement, such as Weld-On 4. Weld on is not a glue, but rather a chemical fusion between the two pieces of acrylic, very much similar to how welding works, hence the name. Once the Weld-On cures it’s as if you are working with a single piece of acrylic, the joint will literally disappear. Also, I should note that Weld-On is the company name, but the 4 has to do with the viscosity of the Weld-On chemical. Weld-On 4 is almost as thin as water, it is designed to be used on two perfectly smooth surfaces; however, if you’re working with a bit of a rougher cut (say from hand cutting the pieces) you can utilize Weld-On 14, which is closer to the viscosity of syrup… The thick material is better at filling in any gaps or imperfections that resulted from the cutting process. I just thought I would share this information as it took me a bit of trial and error to find the best methodology for fusing two pieces of acrylic together, and if I can share that information and keep someone from falling into the same pitfalls that I did then it was worth speaking up. Thanks for the fantastic video, your projects are always a blast; fantastic fusion of creativity, functionality and artistic expression.

Thank you so much for your insight! Those are great tips. I'll check it out next time I have to fuse acrylic.

It's my pleasure, I am happy to hear that this information could be of use. I wish you much luck with your future adventures with acrylic; it's not the easiest material to work with, but it sure does result in a great looking finished product.

The chemical is Dichloromethane or DCM or methylene chloride, I have noticed other chemical as ingredients, but DCM is the solvent that does most if not all the work. Its not cheap in small quantities but very cheap in large quantities. It also boils a little below 40c

Response to comments about using airpumps (or vacuum pumps): 10:15 Yes, that's clearly possible as most other videos with soda dispensers does that. I wanted to try something different and see if it would work with a super affordable submersible pump. The benefits are only a lower cost, and usually a higher flow rate. I also wanted to have containers that I could put ice in to keep drinks cool, and this method made that very easy. But for carbonated drinks a vacuum pump is better as it wont remove as much carbonation, so if you want to replicate the build using that type of pump you shouldn't have to change much! EDIT: About the pumps being food grade; that's definitely some valid critisism. Before using it on the regular I changed the pumps into some food grade vacuum pumps (= even more flat soda, unfortunately, but I don't use it much for soda) that are linked in the description now too. They work just as well with this whole setup, just had to place the tubes a bit differently with the in- and outtake on the pump.

Or you could use compressed air to put air into the container, pushing the liquid out. That way you would only need one compressor (You can redirect the flow of air fairly easily), and the soda would not loose that much carbonation.
@a0flj0
@a0flj0 6 лет назад
Plus, you wold not have a problem cleaning the pumps. And you could get creative, and avoid electrics altogether - attach a compressed air reservoir, connected to all containers all the time, and have the levers just open/close a valve placed on the tube plugged into each container.
@markf.4063
@markf.4063 5 лет назад
Your cylinder would need to be both air and water tight because you'd have to pressurize the cylinder to push the liquid. The use of CO2 as the air source would help as well....seeing as how that's what the carbonation is any ways.

I love your design! I made one with a group that used positive air pressure with a manifold valve system. This air pressure forced liquid out of another line for dispensing. We used a plc for more of an automation style. We also had an ice dispenser using a small cylinder. Thanks for sharing your design!!!

If you insulate it and add a refrigeration unit, than you don’t need ice.

You did a great and looks really nice. I always dreamed of having one of these in my house as a child and now I see it possible to do it on a budget. I personally would stick with 2 liter soda bottles (chilled before) and different pumps. But the aesthetics are great! I would have the ultimate bar setup with one of these

Really nice design, I'm always amazed at your ingenuity. A few suggestions I'd make would be to lengthen the back, change the style of container to retangular tubs to maximize space, add a fill tube to the container so you can fill it relatively easy, add a cap to that tube to make it airtight, for the dispensing tubes, add an electronic shutoff valve to the tube so that it doesn't drip as much when you're done filling your glass. Also, you could incorporate your 'mini-fridge' into the drink compartment to keep it cooler a little longer, and while you're at it, you could make a separate compartment in the drink containers for the ice so that it doesn't melt and dilute the high-fructose corn syrup deliciousness of your beverage

Are those pumps really food safe? And the electric wiring? You really don’t want to mix pvc particles in your drinks 😱
@py2178
@py2178 6 лет назад
Ok. I looked up the pump u ordered and linked to. It is NOT food safe at all. I hope people will read these comments so they at least can order safe stuff to build this project with. Not all plastics are suitable for food, and many are really dangerous and can cause diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer’s.
@jenyates3033

I'm glad I'm not alone on thinking that. No way would I take a drink from this train wreck. Nice school project, but a terrible idea for something to actually use!
@py2178
@py2178 6 лет назад
Jen Yates Not using food safe materials is the big issue here. I don’t see the reason on insulting the project it self, or the construction not related to materials touching food, even if it is something yourself would never have any use for.
@xplinux22
@xplinux22 6 лет назад
Geek Boy 21 You seem to be missing the point here. The issue has nothing to do with the pumps being submerged in the liquid; it's that the liquid ducts inside the pumps make direct contact with the internal components (flux, solder, adhesives, and all). These pumps are only meant to pump things like coolants and are not designed to serve drinks. As the sodas pass through these pumps, they come in direct contact with various contaminants which not only rub off and mix into your sugary drink, but also gradually degrade the longevity of your pump as well. As others in this thread have mentioned, peristaltic pumps would be *way* better for this project, since the liquid-bearing tubing is completely isolated from the pump itself, making it totally safe for pumping consumable liquids. Also, please try not to be so dismissive of others and keep your discussions civil.

This is interesting. I like the design, especially for non-carbonated drinks. I'd probably go with forced air, rather than a vacuum pump. You can get sealed carbon dioxide canisters instead of running room air; regardless of Carbon dioxide or regular room air, carbonation increases with partial pressure.

There are other forms of plywood that can be used for the case. In the United States, where i live, many companies that produce cabinets use lumber-core plywood. It is a series of planks about 12.7mm thick with wood veneer on both faces of the lumber. It might be possible to use that for some sort of project, but this is only a suggestion.
