I have some carpeted stairs. I have been wanting to do something like this for years. You make it look so easy, even though I know it is a lot of work! Thank you for making this video and posting it.

Smart to reuse the stair railing! A lot of people are tearing out wood banisters for metal railings so they look modern with the new stairs. Great job. I've done this but our bullnose didn't come attached to the tread. It was super difficult to deal with. Next time I will definitely go for a one piece design.

The after looks a lot better than before! We did the same-removed carpet from our stairs, but we went further & redid the rails. We built a wall 1/2 way up & added modern looking rails. I think I prefer the openness of our old rails.

I'm encouraged by this video that my idea to change my stairs can probably be done. My home is only 3 years old but I never liked the carpet or flooring that the builder installed. I am excited about making over my first floor and my stairs.

They look SO GOOD. You are making me want to rip the worn carpet off my stairs right now. And I think that railing still totally works. It would have been a great opportunity to replace if you wanted but it's still metal and fairly modern looking. Fresh paint and it works!

Hi Melissa, Great upgrade on your lakehouse. It was unfortunate that the wood beneath the carpenting was so badly damaged. But your solution looks great, and really suits the house. You where also right to keep and use the rails again. It looked like a bit of a struggle, but the results where worth all the effort. Chapeau to you ☺

You did great! I think it's a big improvement. Got to be honest, tho. I cringe whenever somebody calls something "ugly". I mean, yeah, it's not my cup of tea either, but *somebody* thought it was beautiful at one time. Eye of the beholder and all that. 🤷‍♀️ Keep up the good work!

The hallway and steps look like a different house, the carpet before was so awful and the after was so stunning. The beams, the new staircase the hallway and kitchen all of it is so nicely ties together and just looks like it was meant to be in this home, you are reviving this home to its full glory and it is a pleasure to see and follow along. Keep up the amazing work and I cannot wait to see what you will do next😍❤️😍

I appreciate how much work you put into the steps. They look great. What a transformation. I know how difficult it is to remove carpet from stairs. I also removed all the nails, staples, and tack strips. In the process, I had a little slip with the utility knife. I ended up in the ER. Although I hit an artery, It wasn't too serious. I have been working on houses for 40 years, I should have known better. On top of that, I work in a Vocational school, where along with the students, all the teachers have to complete a 10 hour OSHA Safety course. I say half jokingly, they should revoke my OSHA Certificate. After a few days of rest I returned to my steps. Since I was planning on re-carpeting the stairs, I had to add piece of wood to the part that hangs over because after 70 years of carpeting and re-carpeting Most of them were loose, missing or like Swiss cheese. I nailed and glued them. I was aware that if I ever planned to refinish the stairs, they would have to be taken apart and re-installed with hard wood, so I wasn't concerned about the kind of wood I used as long as it had the same shape and was solid. They were ready for the carpet layer.

Great job and great results, at a fraction of what it would cost to have a contractor do it. You're pretty handy with power tools and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. For future, if you're ever doing such a reno again: if you want to trim the tread edge straight, nail a strip of wood to work as a guide for your jigsaw shoe (or your circular saw shoe). A couple of nails is enough and the holes will eventually get covered with the new tread anyway.

I've pulled carpet off a fair share of stairs, and it's almost impossible to do without needing a band-aid or two. It's even worse if the carpet has been pet soiled just plain old. I've seen some hideous stair overlays done by flooring companies, and although I'm not a fan of overlays, you did a nice job.

I rent and said enough with the gross carpeting on the stairs. My son ripped off the carpet and padding for me and I cleaned up. Wow how gross and the dirt revealed under the padding. It took awhile to remove staples and nails and dirt. That was 5 years ago. They need a fresh coat of paint which I don’t mind. Very easy to clean👍👍👍

I can really feel your pain on this project. I removed carpeting from my main stairs a while back, only I had about twice as many stairs to deal with. Removing every single one of the staples and nails was time-consuming, and without gloves, a bit hazardous to one's health ; ) I ended up staining/painting my stairs with alternating colors on the treads and risers: a deep black stain+sealer on the treads, and white primer + paint on the risers.

I always look forward to and enjoy seeing what your doing next in the house. Some of the colors and material you use I question, until I see the end product. You are making me look outside of the box on some of my own projects. The only thing that I would change is that you don't always wear eye protection. ESPECIALLY WHEN USING A SAW! Sorry to sound like your dad, but we all want to see many more of your projects. Without an eye Patch. Keep up the great work, and don't forget the eye protection.

Hi Melissa. I enjoy your videos so much. I want to compliment you on your choices for the stairway. The black paint with the laminate pattern looks marvelous. How ever, I want to caution you about stairs. I am in the construction industry and there is a science to stairs and the human body. After the bottom riser, all of the other risers should be the same. This is because the body sets a rhythm as it climbs stairs and if the top riser is taller then a person will inevitably trip. This can occur even if the difference is 1/16". In your case, the top riser is going to be shorter so you can expect a stomp at the top of the stairs because the body has self regulated to the other risers. The body will think that the surface is at the same level as the rest and assume a stop and the foot will fall the rest of the distance. As I said before, you do a great job in everything I have seen you do and I hope that you keep doing these videos for a long time. Just store a helpful tip in the back of your brain for the next stair project.🙂

Each riser is exactly the same. The height added by the treads is equal to the height added by the landing strip/new flooring at the top.

I have carpet on my stairs, white carpet. I started removing the carpet & the stairs are black metal stairs. Unbelievably they used some kind of construction adhesive obviously to adhere the tack strips. And huge long nails I'm unfortunately not strong enough to remove each one. It's near impossible to remove these tack strips completely. The stairs have rusted in the spots the strips are as well. I gave up until I could figure out what to do. I finally got the tack strips off the top stair by using a hammer & chisel. But it still left pieces of wood stuck to the metal. I cannot find anyone who has the same issue as I do. Apparently whoever built my home is the only person that idiotic. If anyone reads this & has suggestions I will be so grateful.
