Excellent. I wish you showed the staining process but I’m using this video to refinish my stairs. Thank you. Question. Do you match the railing to the floors? I have gray floors and gray hardwood stair treads. Seems like a lot of gray on the stairs. Thoughts?
@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition 2 года назад
I wish I did also! This was my first DIY video so I did a lot of things wrong as far as documenting how I did it! I matched my railing to my floors (as closely as possible). I used the same stain for my fireplace mantle. It’s up to you on what you think would look good. I think a brown stain would pair well with grey floors also, so totally up to you! Maybe look at Pinterest for ideas! If I could give you advice on staining. Your going to need to sand the railing a lot to allow the wood to fully accept the stain. Good luck! Thanks for watching 😊

@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition Год назад
@@degen_dad7682 Thank you! 😁 I bought the balusters at Home Depot. They come at a length of 44” but you need to cut them to length based on the distance between the bottom of your handrail to the top of the baseboard, then add 1.5” to account for the margin that will go into each hole. Here is a link to the ones I used, which seem to be in stock: www.homedepot.com/p/Stair-Parts-44-in-x-0-5-in-Matte-Black-Metal-Stair-Baluster-I555B-044-HD00D/202088527

Looks great. For the bottom of the newel post…where you decided to cut into the woodwork, would have been better to cut the bottom of the newel post to slide over the current structure.
@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition 4 месяца назад
Hey David. Thank you. In my situation cutting into the woodwork worked out perfectly because the distance I needed to make up was the same thickness of the wood piece over the main structure. I think it really depends on your situation. I can see both options working. Thanks for watching and commenting.

What length balusters did you use? My current balusters only measure 27” without including what is hidden inside the railing and base.
@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition 2 года назад
When you buy the balusters from the store they will be ~44” in length. You need to cut the baluster based on your staircase. Measure from the bottom of your handrail to the bottom board and add 1.5”. It sounds like your balusters are 27” so you would want to cut them at 28.5” in length to account for the part that goes in both holes My balusters were longer ~31.5” in length

How do you know what angle the shoes are cut at to match the pitch of the stairway railing? Or is it just a standard angle?
@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition 2 года назад
It’s standard. I just looked up the product I used from Home Depot online and in the description it says “Most importantly, the Slip-N-Grip shoe will self-adjust to the angle of most residential stair handrails, providing a tight fit underneath the handrail.” www.homedepot.com/p/Stair-Parts-1-2-in-Matte-Black-Slip-N-Grip-Angle-Shoe-I810B-127-HDSNG/304643085#overlay

Hello I'm curious as to how you took the old railing off because mine is attached the same way with no screws
@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition 3 года назад
I used a wrecking bar to pry the railing away from the newel post. It was held in with 3 nails, so I just took my time to pry it away slowly. After the newel post was removed I left the railing in place. To make sure the railing was supported I left about half of the spindles installed until I got the new newel post installed. Then I removed all of the old spindles before I installed the new iron balusters. Let me know if this didn’t answer your question.

Is the glue strong enough to hold a fall on the guardrails?
@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition 2 года назад
The guardrail (aka balusters) were cut to length that both ends were inside the holes. The glue (aka liquid nails) are to to help keep them in place and prevent them from rotating. The glue alone is not the main thing that would help break and fall, but the actual balusters because both ends are inserted into the holes. I did a lot of research before and this is the method used to install balusters. cheapstairparts.com/how-to-install-iron-balusters/

@DIYHomeEdition
@DIYHomeEdition Год назад
Yes this was my first ever DIY video so I didn’t do a lot of things that probably would have made it better. But to remove the spindles/balusters I simply just cut them in half. Then twisted them in a circle which helped pull out any Brad nails that were holding the spindle/baluster in place. I would do some additional research to make sure you remove your spindles/balusters correctly that are unique to your staircase. Best of luck and thanks for watching!

Just a bit of feedback if you're interested. You didn't actually show yourself doing anything??? THe value of these videos is watching the process, both the success and the screw ups. I think you would have a much better following if you started filming yourself doing the actual tasks instead of just talking about them. Just my 2 cents...good luck!

Thanks for the feedback and I completely agree! I just purchased a tripod that will allow me to capture me actually doing the work.
