Thank you Bar Guitar. I do want to be clear that it was in no way a jab at Petey or trying to prove him wrong, I respect him completely. I just want to point out (as a lot of people have) that it seems to be trying to sustain at the harmonic of whatever is being played, in the actual sustainer circuit there is a switch for harmonic or standard sustain that basically flips the polarity of the pickup on the wires (- becomes +) you kinda don't want to ground the sustainer on the guitar wiring if anything keep the wires as far away as you can. I have personally had a lot of success with LM386 based amp circuits for this exact application which runs on 9v, you also get the option of running the pots in trim or wiring them out to the scratchplate so you can dial in the sustain mid bend for example (although personally I'd recommend the set and forget method).

Thank you for watching and taking the time to write such a detailed and intelligent comment Dax. I had a hell of a time trying to get this to work at all. I should have researched the subject before the video to get a better result but I figured id just take a crack at it and see what I could come up with. I have a major amount of respect for anyone that can get one of the DIY sustainer systems dialed in. I truly appreciate the info. I think it will be helpful to many of the viewers that plan on tackling such a project and look down to the comment section and If I return to the subject I will definitely use this information myself. Great project so far! I've been working on a similar project since like a year and a half ago, so I could make some considerations. First, the sustainer pickup needs to have a magnet too, so to induce a magnetic field into the strings, that will then react to the variable magnetic field from the coil. That's why the blade didn't work quite well. Also, from my experience, higher impedance than 8 ohm is actually better. My last one was over 30 ohm. It'll have also the side effect of making the battery last longer. And you can switch from normal to harmonics and vice versa by reversing the polarity of the signal, either from the input pickup or the sustainer pickup. I'm currently using a circuit around the TDA2822m, which is a sound chip often used in cheap pc speakers. I'm using it in bridge configuration, as opposed to stereo, which would give me 2W in an 8 ohm speaker, but it's working pretty much cold in a higher impedance. I'm still making it work as intended, but that's what I have so far.
@heavymetalATC
@heavymetalATC 3 года назад
That is awesome! Obviously I had no prior knowledge of the project going in aside from a very basic knowledge of how a sustainer system works from memory. I really should have read up on it or watched some videos but I always like to see what I can come up with on my own first and damn this aint easy. Its like trying to ride a unicycle while throwing darts behind you using a mirror. A guy saw my videos and invited me to his facebook forum about diy sustainers and I was glad to see that I was not the only one who had trouble with it but I have learned a little about them since. Like I didnt even know that putting it out of phase is what made the harmonics I just kept changing the wiring until it worked. I appreciate all the advise I will def. come back to this comment and read it again when I try to get a more compact one working in another guitar. I am surprised that you are getting action with such a low wattage I figured I would be able to but with the junky thrown together coils I made it just wouldn't push enough magnetic field with the computer speakers. In fact I was pushing so much into the coil it was getting hot LOL.
@joseislanio8910
@joseislanio8910 3 года назад
@@heavymetalATC thanks for the reply. In fact, the low wattage is being kind of a problem, but I don't see another alternative to make it usable with a 9v battery. Maybe I'll try a tda1013, which is a 4w chip mostly used in old CRT TVs. I'll come back here if I get any interesting results. Cheers!

Thank you Alex. As a kid at the tail end of the hair metal days. I would hear this word sustainiac thrown around and It was a long time until I knew what it was. I think they came in the 80s and early 90s Kramer guitars. Petey has a Fernandes guitar with a sustainer system in it and he uses it in his music to get all kinds of swelling harmonic sounds. Sounds really great this is a kinda pale imitation but I'm just stoked that I finally got it to work right.

Just get a cheap small speaker (not a tweeter, it will squeak) and attach it to the back of the guitar body, and connect it parallel to the amp speaker, just like you're connecting your thingy on this video. Seems it only wants to resonate at the harmonics. I get the same thing happening with my Ebow clone. Instead of feedback looping, that generates a magnetic pulse and you get an almost instant effect. Have you tried placing it at different places in the pickup cavities?
@heavymetalATC
@heavymetalATC 3 года назад
Thank you for watching and taking the time to respond Tony. Yes I was going for that harmonic sustain like the Fernandes sustainer system but I wasn't able to try different positions due to the signal bleeding into the other pickup and creating a straight feedback (not through the string) like a horrible squeeling microphone type of feedback. that is why I put it so far away but in testing the driver placement did seem to affect which harmonic nodes were. I think if you wanted a straight clean note sustain without the harmonics: using a clean amp without overdrive would probably do that. I was getting a bit of that with the computer speaker amp but it just wasn't strong enough to push the stings and get a singing harmonic tone and when I added a boost pedal to dirty up the signal it just fed back.

What if you attached some type of transducer to the tremolo block of a guitar, like a headphone driver, or a dynamic mic diaphram, and run an amplified signal to it so that it resonates the strings mechanically? That way you don't need anything extra on the face of the guitar, and you can use all of the normal pickups that you're used to. I might have the necessary crap lying about to pull this off myself. I only have one pair of over ear phones, that I don't want to screw up, but I have some old earbuds that I'm willing to sacrifice for the cause. I'm thinking I could just use some rubber bands to hold them down tight, and send a headphone out signal to them. Any thoughts? I'm predicting I'll have to find some bigger headphones to sacrifice, that will have more mass and transmit more energy

Dude you just nailed one of the early designs. I saw a little round metal can transducer bungeed to a tele headstock with medical hose ran all into a big mixing console in an old black and white photo. This seems exactly like what you are describing and im quite almost 100% sure you can get that to work especially like way out on the headstock so it has leverage to vibrate and resonate.

@heavymetalATC
@heavymetalATC 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Alaric. I guess all I can do is warn you the same way Petey did me... Its a real MF. Having an amp in guitar already should be really helpful. its already set up not to feedback on itself the unwanted feedback was the hardest part to control. I did try the ceramic magnet as well as no magnet and many different placements on both drivers. The ceramic seemed to just not move the strings as hard and no magnet was just squeely feedback city and no effect on the string at all. I wouldn't discount the blade magnet idea altogether. I thing I just over-wound this one. The best way to go may be a hotrails type driver with both coils wound to 4 ohms and put in series like a humbucker it may be able to really pull on a bigger part of the string? dont know but that seems logical. Everything I thought was logical in this experiment seemed to backfire though so??? Thanks again.

Thats a pretty good thought right there vincent... Im sure it was only so hard cause there is some small detail I wasnt getting correct in some way. People build these things perfectly sometimes but it seems very hit or miss.

@@heavymetalATC I wish I could point you in the right there. I am just a bedroom guitarist with a half made up, subpar understanding of physics and no current access to the tools

i have a idea Im gonna use a pen six screws and some chinese magnetwire spools to make a bunch of single string pickups

That is a great idea. I have thought of doing something similar using sewing machine bobbins. I think it will work out great and you can wire them parallel or in series for different sounds and mount them higher and lower to tune in the string volume and closer or further from the bridge to fine tune the bass and treble of each string when you get into this let me know how it goes and if you record any of it send me a link I would be totally interested in this.

Can you make an onboard spring reverb unit so one can shake it and make it rattle when playing surf?

Thank you so much for this suggestion Pablo. I will put this in the note pad and If/When I get around to it I will give you a shout-out in the video I think this will really make a good video and not be extremely complicated so it may jump up the list a few slots.

E-bow?
@heavymetalATC

Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment BFBH! You might be able to mod an e-bow some how to take an input and work as a sustainer? I wish I had just a plane e-bow though. Those things are awesome. I have never understood how it doesn't demagnetize alnico pole pickups though, seems like it was screw them right up?

CAN YOU DO A VIDEO ON HOW MAKE GUITAR PLAY IN STEREO AS OPPOSED TO TYPICAL MONO. SO STEREO MOD & MAYBE HOW TO MAKE STEREO OUTPUT JACK WITH FULL STEREO MOD? OF COURSE ONE WOULD NEED EITHER A STEREO GUITAR AMP OR USE TWO AMPS IN STEREO. YOU HAVE THE ONLY CHANNEL I CAN LEARN FROM WITH MY PTSD ASPERGERS & DEPRESSION AS BAD AS IT IS .

stop tapping coils for sound ... use the input jack contacts and good... if it doesn t work there then its kinda useless to start out in the first place

Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment Stellarion.. yes, thats a habit I picked up from pickup building I do that to check them before I ever install them and I guess its just my default. Thanks again.
