An afternoon and a few bucks and I have an awning for my 4Runner. Simple project that about anyone can do. Just need a drill if you get the PVC pipe precut at the store.
Materials list:
*1 1/4" PVC pipe cut to 6' (note: PVC pipe size can vary as long as one fits inside the other)
*1" PVC pipe cut to 6'
*4 wire lock pins square like these
www.amazon.com...
*6 washers. Size depends on your other materials
*8'x8' tarp or whatever size you have/buy. I used a Guide Gear tarp I already had for backpacking. It is very light and easy to pack and has proven to be pretty reliable from my backpacking.
*Heavy duty zip ties to attach PVC pipe to roof rack. Size again dependent on your rig's roof rack.
*Tent poles. I used my Kelty poles. The only downside is they are not adjustable, but I already had them to go with my Kelty tarp I used backpacking.
*Guy lines. I used the kind that is reflective at night.
*Tent pegs. I like the ones that look like big nails.
1. Determine size of the pipe your tarp will attach to. Slide the smaller pipe inside the larger till it is the length you need.
2. Drill holes where the tarps attachment points (grommets or straps) are located. Helps to start with small bit, then get larger till it is the size of your wire lock pins.
3. Put a washer on the wire lock pin, then slide the pin through the grommet or strap of the tarp and through the hole in the PVC. Then close the wire lock pin with the swivel retaining clip.
4. Determine mounting location of the pipe to your roof rack. Since I used heavy zip ties, I drilled a hole through the PVC large enough for the zip tie to fit through. Then attach to the roof rack.
5. Stretch the tarp out, attach the tent poles and guy lines and stake out.
I got the idea for this build from Wanderlost Overland's RU-vid Channel. I made a few changes, but it is very close to what they did. I liked their DIY approach and just changed the pole to PVC pipe and used wire lock pins instead of eye bolts.

Nice design! I came up with a similar approach also after viewing various RU-vid videos. You're the first person I've seen who also used wire locking pins rather than something unnecessarily elaborate...the locking pins are cheap, easy, and effective! Nice work.

Thank you. Lots of useful ideas. By way of return, one very compact support for a light tarp like yours is to put up "support lines", i.e. two cords, cables, etc. in an X under the tarp (once it is up). They just help give a little more headroom underneath. They won't support much during rain/wind, etc., at least mine don't, because they are lightweight.

Those pins thru your roof rails and it’s secured. Simple is great. Nice lightweight and I’ll use your idea to run down my rubicon. That whole unit can’t top 50lbs. I like it.

Good idea. I was thinking about using Timber instead of the tube but this looks neat. Im amazed that the ends of the tube don’t bend too much.

I did a similar setup, but I tie my pole to the roof rack with those Gear Ties, which are basically very heavy-duty bread ties-Twist on, twist off and extremely strong.

End Caps to eliminate wind whistle and drag? I have also "thought about" attaching a removable short center pole via a 3 way PVC connector just for a small headroom lift. (I love the center strap on your tarp, I'm surprised that's not a more common thing!) I'm gonna DIY that! I attach mine nestled between Cargo rack and a Luggage rack with heavy duty Zip-Ties. At first I thought the luggage rack was going to be a problem in mounting this, but it actually turns out to be an asset. 2009 RX350 AWD - Thank you for posting this!

You have some ideas I have not thought of. I have poles, guy ropes, tent pegs. Didn't know about wire locking pins. Only complaint I have is with attaching it to my vehicle. Can't drive away without dismantling it. I would like it to be free standing.

Pull the pins to detach the tarp, slide inner pole into outer pole till hole lines up, insert pin, leave the pvc poles on the rig. Will have to stash the tent poles, tarp, and guy ropes in the truck. Can take it down in a few minutes. Thanks for the comment.

Very nice. Good thought on the wire pins. I'm thinkin I'm going to copy it for my XTerra. However, your notion of using the center pull out against a handy tree makes me think of something else. I'm wondering if one were to add a T-fitting at a strategic place along the outer pipe of correct size that allows the inner pipe to continue to slide inside it. Said fitting with the hole pointing to the sky would allow it to serve as a receiver for a similar diameter pipe to rise say 24" straight up. This column would support the center pull guy line to be run trough or over it and tied off at the opposite/driver roof rack bar.

Be careful with the cheese ties,sun will deteriorate them and it will just come flying off,they make metal zip ties also which would be alot safer,great job though.

@tuffyt4r557 2 года назад
Did not know that about the sun. I don't leave this on all the time, just when I am going out camping or doing a ham radio event. I'm thinking of using those big twist ties or a different type of strap to attach to the roof rack. Not liking the zip tie arrangement other than they were cheap and easy and quick. Appreciate the advice and love everyone adding tips to this design for everyone to benefit from. I get so many great ideas from RU-vid.

Why not use pvc pipes at the sagging end of the tarp, would help to steady everything when the guide lines are tightened. Worth a try.

Could I suggest double guy ropes for extra security? I like the bright reflective ropes and I had the same idea. Thanks for the share.
@michaelfoor6064
@michaelfoor6064 3 года назад
I agree excellent job. The two guy ropes should be 90 degrees to each other. One in line with the side edge of the tarp and the other in line with the front edge. That gives you resistive support from both sides as well as tension support from the front. Your center tie is also favorable. You can do it with a third pole if a tree isn’t handy.

Doesn't flex. I suppose because of one pipe inside of the other for most of the length.

@JustinFasula

... care to elaborate on this? What specifically doesn't work? What is it about the conditions in Arizona that causes it to fail?
@dsplunker
@dsplunker 2 месяца назад
@@JustinFasula Sure, I would be happy too. First, schedule 40 or not that pvc will not stand up to the sun. It will get hot and disfigure while dropping that tarp to the floor. I built a much smaller tarp hanger for my sons rabbits, with schedule 40, went to work the next day and everything was on the ground when i returned. There was no holes drilled in my main beam, just factory fittings, primer and glue. I don't believe your posts would survive a moderate windy day although I haven't tested them.

@@dsplunker Awesome reply, thank you for the clarification! Since I plan to take my rig overlanding through a good portion of the southwest, I'll look into some alternative materials or designs.
@dsplunker

@@JustinFasulaI am glad I could help. I ended up making mine out of thin walled aluminum. Most of the southwest is beautiful. I live in the high desert very near the the start of the forest.. We are about 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. I recommend coming to AZ in the spring and late fall. You can come to the flagstaff area early fall to get the great weather.

I suggest ALWAYS starting this sort of DIY video by showing the awning retracting. I will skip ahead a dozen times to see if it retracts properly.
@tuffyt4r557
@tuffyt4r557 5 лет назад
I thought it was pretty obvious from the first frame that it is not retractable. Sorry you had to watch it a dozen times to figure that out. The title "Simple, easy, cheap" doesn't suggest retractable either. Please post your video showing your simple, easy, cheap retractable awning once you get it done. I would like to watch it to get some pointers on proper awning building.
