Thanks for taking the time to film and upload this! It makes doing things like this so much easier and we wouldn't have this information if people like you weren't putting the effort to make these videos. Great job. I hope you're healthy and the motor is serving you well

Wow this video really clarified some things for me because I just bought a 3.5 Suzuki and the water comes out exactly like that and I thought it was clogged.

This video is very helpful. Thanx for sharing. I have an issue with my vintage 2 hp Suzuki outboard that may require an impeller replacement. I'll do a video on that as well with my RU-vid channel when I get to that point.

Nice video, but a couple of points... 1) There is a small rubber block underneath the cowling (covers) and it has two of the shear pins and two cotter pins for emergency repairs on the water. 2) Not recommended to reuse the cotter pins, they fatigue when bent and if they fail... you can lose your prop. Reusing a 10 cent part to risk an 80 buck prop might cause you to reconsider. 3) The cotter pin does not go through a hole, it engages a notch on the end of the power shaft so it does not take any stress. It is only to hold the prop in place (no reverse on the motor so the thrust is always pushing the prop onto the bearing). The sheer pin is what transfers shaft power to the prop. It is brittle and made to break if you hit some rocks... saving your prop. 4) The two small holes are not the primary water return. They are overflow taps and only sputter a small amount of water and exhaust. The real water return is under a snap-on cover on the front edge of the lower power assembly, under water. again, nice video... and btw... heard the wife(?) in the back ground ask how you knew not to take the rear water pump housing away to prevent SAE90 oil from going all over the place. Got something to confess there? : )

Thanks for the extra info. haha and I laughed at that part of the video when she said that, too.

Mine doesn't sputter out the overflow taps its just exhaust 2 stroke smoke that comes out sometimes, i suspect my channels are blocked.

Thanks - replacing the impeller on mine tomorrow. Built one good one out of two part motors . Great little engines. Parts like gaskets etc getting hard to get now.

"There motors don't pump a lot of water" through those holes because it pumps it through some other holes , dear , under the waterline !

The main outlet for the water pump is under the water,thats why you think its not pumping much water.Its behind the clip that hides one of your lower unit nuts,look and you will see the hole.

Do u know if this is the same for the later motors.. i have a 2008.. same 2 whole configuration.. pumps about the same amount of water as in this video.. a bit more thougg.. But the later than 2008 models with only one hole.. they proper shoot out.. do u know if this is normal?

Actually this Suzuki is also runs with 50-1 or even higher, because this small engine is very easy to get over heat (if the sand jammed the water loop which is easy to happen but hard to find) then running in high speed the cylinder will quickly get scratching with 100-1.

Does your motor have a hole at the end of the shaft where you removed the first pin? Thanks

Have you ever changed the coil on this motor? I think that’s the problem with mine.

Nice video! How does the cotter key keep the prop on the shaft? I there a hole in the shaft?
@ThatBoatGuy

there is a hole in the prop shaft

ah, there is a race groove that goes around the shaft end, it engages the cotter pin. If the pin went through a hole it would immediately be sheared when the shear pin broke (by design) and that defeats its purpose: to keep you from losing your prop.

u should take that impeller off, and install it back but with the impeller fins the other way and see if u get a better water flow coming off... alot of ppl when they change them usually dont put them back the right away, i noticed u did pout it back the same way as the older one, but that dont mean the older one was on right.. try it and see what happens, should only take u 5 minutes and it well worth it specially if u gonna use that motor for 2/3 hrs non stop...just a thought :) nice video by the way !!
