I typically add the teabags directly to the vinegar/steel wool and then hit the wood with a heat gun and it results in a beautiful red-brown color

I stained some pine dresser front with coffee. I think I did five applications with the coffee, and then at the end put the vinegar mix on and it went black. It was amazing!

How long did you leave that mixture (steel wool and vinegar? Because I liked the gray color that the pine took.

Can you just mix the tea with the iron acetate and do it in one coat?

It doesn't pop the grain. It appears to cover it up. Have you tried sanding it? does that help?

So I did 3 coats of the steel wool/ vinegar trick on a small black walnut and the color change is dramatic, but it's not super even. Do you think I could try doing a round of tea conditioner on top of what I've already ebonized, and then doing another coat of vinegar?

Will it darken if I use a factory-made wood stain after rubbing the tea on? I'll be sealing it with boat lacquer after.

use less water with your tea and add a bit of baking or washing soda and you'll extract way more tannin and get much stronger colours.

+Dandypanty Sorry I forgot to mix them! ;D I did them separately. I was testing on a small piece of scrap wood, sadly dunno what type of wood it is, but that kinda wood seems to have lotsa tannins(tea increases this matter to wood) So, the one I stained with vinegar-steel solution turned black and the one with tea-bag in 1/5 cup hot water, just became a little bit darker. Both seemed to belong to Darth Vader though ;D Anyways do your own testing, I was only after staining small pieces of wood for a tiny speaker box. I do not recommend mixing them though. Since I realized that the job of tea there is to increase wood tannins, the matter that reacts to vinegar-steel/iron(iron acetate) by turning into dark color. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron%28III%29_acetate#Uses www.instructables.com/id/Make-your-own-Iron-AcetateHomemade-Stain/ Heat vinegar in a glass jar until it boils then take it off heat and drop steel wool i, works faster. Do not use the stainless steel wool, it won't work, you get a red solution and I dunno what it is. Leave it for 24 hours Good luck

I wonder if you can make a batch of stain by mixing the tea and vinegar steel wool together and applying once...or if you need to do the two separate applications.
@MrDiyDork
@MrDiyDork 7 лет назад
I think that would work too. You can also apply the tea after applying the stain. It's easy and inexpensive enough to experiment with it a bit to see what happens.

I'm making a headboard. I'm using white vinegar and steel wool. The 2x4s I'm using look great (gray). The 1x6s are turning a cedar-y color. I'm really upset. Any idea why that's happening? TIA

If u want ur oak to look red-ish. Then let ur vineger mix sit for a good 3-4 days, and ur tea sit for 1 day. Paint the oak - let it dry over night, then paint it with ur tea mix the day after and then u will have a wonderful red-ish colour , like mahogany colour ✌🏼

Dandypanty THANK YOU FOR REPLY😊 Wood is sanded. I added a bit of water to the homemade stain then it became darker. I'm now trying concentrated cranberry juice. I just cleaned off the sticky so have to let try. I dont know how to send pictures on RU-vid.

+KE Maybe you used stainless steel wool, it won't work. Try regular steel wool. And heat vinegar until it boils in a glass jar(maybe inside a pot with water). Try Choir Boy (Brass Wool), it ain't iron acetate though nor copper acetate, it is zinc acetate[I think] but colors dark gray/black) Or try the kind different kind of steel wools, the kind that look like wire mesh not coils. c8.alamy.com/comp/BHFXHF/steel-wool-scouring-pad-BHFXHF.jpg And test on dry scrap wood

I made the homemade stain with the vinegar and steel wood and let it sit for days when I use it it didn't do anything anyone have any ideas what happened or could have happened please
@guyincognito.
@guyincognito. 6 лет назад
Your steel wool might have wax or oil on it, preventing the vinegar solution from being able to react with it. You could try washing your steel wool in soapy water before adding it to the vinegar, to remove any wax or oil residue. Also make sure your wood isn't finished; any kind of varnish or sealer on the wood will repel the acetate solution.

I did Hibiscus, it turned kinda light red. (without tea bag trick), maybe higher concentration of vinegar like %15 or more works better. I also have not ground it, just dried leaves, nor did I heat the vinegar before dropping it inside it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus Maybe red chili powder works the same, ain't sure. (spicy wood) ;D
