This literally took me 100% less time than going out and buying one. I had all the materials on hand. (and by the way thanks, I had no idea how to use those new attachment devices, this is my first new toilet.) I used 120 grit sandpaper and steel wool because that is what I had turned out great. We only have one bathroom, so I would have to get a cheap seat from the dollar store for temporary use while doing the project. I love our wood seat and I can’t find one similar so this fix is perfect. The worst thing about the worn spots is even though you know the seat is clean, it looks like a poop stain. Lol

Lol! By the way if you choose to do this, make sure that you don’t use the mineral spirits that I specify in the video. Just use a damp cloth to wipe the seat down after sanding. Unless you make sure that the mineral spirits are completely dry, it may affect the adhesion of your new paint. I neglected to mention that in the video. My best for your project’s success.

@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome 4 месяца назад
It is highly likely you are using too much paint with too little time between coats. Also, if you used thinner to clean the seat you did not wait long enough for the thinner to totally evaporate. It is actually better to use rubbing alcohol to remove the dust and let the alcohol completely flash off. I recommend that you put it near a heat source to help the paint cure. Use radiant heat not forced air if you can. Alternately, you could place it in the sun if that is doable. As a last resort you can use lacquer thinner and wipe off the paint, wait until the thinner dries, re-sand the seat and wipe with alcohol, and start again.

@@BudsSmartHome OOPS! I noticed that the surface is rough on the underside of the toilet seat that we painted. I noticed this when I went to clean it with a wet paper towel: it was not smooth to wip. Now the seat sticks a bit to the toilet bowl when you close it, after I tried to wipe it down gently with a wet paper towel. That's the only part of the toilet seat we did. Is it okay to start over and do this whole procedure again, given it's an old seat and we've already sanded it and painted it once? I wonder if we didn't apply enough rustoleum. The surface is rough to the touch and a wet paper towel ends up getting slightly stuck to the paper. Thanks for your help! Clearly we did something wrong here. Since we have the supplies, I don't mind trying again, unless it's current sanded and sprayed condition makes this hard to do on a second try.
@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome Год назад
If it’s sticking a bit, it sounds like the paint did not fully cure. Also, it’s important that when you wipe it down, you do not use mineral spirits as I had suggested in the video. Although it did not cause issues for me, I found out subsequently that that can react with the paint if it’s not fully dried when you apply paint. My suggestion would be to make sure that the current paint is fully cured before you attempt to sand the seat. You may want to place it under a heat lamp if you have one to help dry the surface. Then very lightly sand the surface with 220 grit sandpaper or higher. I emphasize lightly. Try not to expose any wood. What you want to do is just knock off any high spots. Then wipe it down with a damp cloth to remove all dust, then repaint, making sure that you do several very light coats and leave time in between for the paint to fully dry. Also follow the instructions on the can for complete curing after the finish coat. Let me know how it comes out.

How much paint was left in the can? We need to replace the toilet seats at my school, but I was thinking maybe we should just use spray paint to give them some color instead of buying a new seat for $20. Is it safe to use spray paint? What if people have sensitive skin? I'm just trying to cover my tracks here!
@edgarava1
@edgarava1 Год назад
I wonder if these come with some special paint that is not toxic, I mean, you sit on it every day chipping away the paint with your body, therefore that paint is most likely getting absorbed through your skin and I’m not sure if that can be dangerous on the long run
@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome Год назад
Most paints are not considered toxic after they have fully dried and cured. The toxicity of dried paint can vary depending on the type of paint and its ingredients. Here are some general guidelines: Water-based or acrylic paints: These types of paints are generally considered non-toxic when dry. Once water-based paints have dried and cured, any residual toxicity is typically minimal and not a concern for most people. Oil-based paints: Oil-based paints contain solvents and chemicals that can be more toxic than water-based paints, especially when they are wet or in liquid form. However, once oil-based paints have dried and cured, they are generally considered safe for normal use.

Yes. Applying polyurethane to a painted surface is a good way to protect the paint. Use a water-based product if you're concerned about color because it won't yellow as much as an oil-based one. Make sure that the paint is fully cured before attempting to add the polyurethane. You can also try the Rust Oleum 280702 American Accents Ultra Cover Gloss Clear: amzn.to/3xgULG4

After doing this exactly the way you did and buying all the same things my toilet seat is left rather chalk like? Not glossy. Is this because the mineral spirits on a water based paint? How can I resolve this?
@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome 3 года назад
You likely used a satin or semi gloss paint. If you prefer a glossy finish you should use a glossy paint. The mineral spirits can create problems if it’s not thoroughly dry/evaporated. If the paint finish is removed and the wood surface is exposed, the thinner could be absorbed into the wood fibers. In the case of exposed wood, a tack cloth dampened with water would be best to remove dust.

I know this particular paint is rated for plastic, however I did not remove the plastic stoppers on my lid and the paint did not adhere well to these plastic surfaces as well as the wood surface. To be fair I did not scuff the plastic surface like I did the wood surfaces. If you’re going to attempt to paint plastic, you’ll want to ensure that you scuff all surfaces of the lid with sandpaper very well to improve the chances of good adhesion.

@@BudsSmartHome you little sweetheart! I think the Sadalak would work. I’ll have to check out the dimensions. My toilet is a Foremost, i paid a lot of money for it, I think that they might have gone out of business or something, I’ve been looking since last year. I hope this works out, thank you so much!🙏

Will it work on plastic toilet seat?
@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome 3 года назад
The solution is not recommended for plastic seats. It’s likely that you’ll have a paint adhesion issue. You may want to try it if you rough the plastic surface up very well, but I would not recommend it.

@@BudsSmartHome thanks so much for the reply. I have a black toilet and seat that I ruined with a too abrasive cleaner. Ugh. It took the finish off. So I will give this a try before I spend the $70 for a new one .

@@christinabrezinski5531 ~ My best wishes for a successful project. Black finish can be very tricky. It is easier with a satin finish verses a gloss or even a semi-gloss. Remember to not get in a hurry and choose multiple very light and even coats rather than two or three heavy wet coats. doing so will ensure a better finish and will help minimize paint runs.

Just curious how light-headed you were feeling after applying that spray paint in an enclosed environment. Also, a little leary of removing screws because they will not seat as well when reinserting them into the wood.

What does the mineral spirits do for the toilet seat?
@BudsSmartHome
@BudsSmartHome 4 года назад
Barnard, don’t use mineral spirits on the toilet seat. I did this in error. When using a waterbase paint you just want to use a damp cloth, using water to dampen the cloth. The purpose of wiping it down is to remove any residual dust before painting.

Lol! That's hilarious. So what your saying is you could grab a brand new one for $10 cheaper! Haha. I'm sure your wife just loves cleaning it too. I have the exact same toilet seat it was like $27 @ Walmart. I will say it's a great one though cause most of them that cost way more their self close system tears up very quickly. Anyways just go buy a new seat and be done with it.
