As an apprentice elevator mechanic some of the journeyman had these incredible Totes and I was told I had to Buddy up with a sheet metal worker see if I could get one too I have to tell you it was very hard to let that go many years later fantastic work of art

Hey mate. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Sheet metal work is a lot of fun, especially when you have all the good gear to produce it. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Aaron.

Man, watching this video takes me back to doing sheet metal with my students. We didn't have a computerized shear or engraver, just manual equipment, but we made lots of trays, tool boxes, and the like. I had started to make videos for the shop projects but your videos, which look very appropriate for your students to use, are very pro!

Thanks Everett. I’m currently working at a catholic college not far from my house. It’s not a bad workshop to be honest, however we do need more lathes and it would be nice to have a CNC mill & lathe. The hydraulic guillotine and folder are a nice addition and the students enjoy using them. It’s a shame you’re still not teaching mate, it sounds like you still have lots more to give. No doubt we will chat in person sometime soon and you can fill me in 😉

I expected the flats being thrown on the table to magically turn into the finished product...then I remembered I wasn't watching "this old tony". I might have to try my hand at some sheet metal at some point. It is amazing how sturdy it is.

G'day Jody. Yes I thought it best not to emulate this Old Tony 🤣. Sheet metal is a bit of lost art / trade these days. However, still widely used by ducting installers and roofing plumbers. Hope you and the family are well? Merry Christmas mate.

G’day Adam. Thanks for watching buddy. Hey, I’m surprised that you didn’t do any sheetmetal in your TAFE certificate II. My students do a combination of fabrication (sheetmetal and welding) and machining. You need to build yourself a small panbrake for home mate. Merry Christmas 🎄
@carneeki
@carneeki 3 года назад
@@AaronEngineering My teacher put together a bunch of electives that he thought would suit me well (he wasn't wrong!), it's just that there wasn't enough time for me to do everything! A pan brake is a great idea - I have a bit of angle put aside. Have a great Christmas!

Wouldn’t the spot welds be sufficient to hold the caddy together (well, maybe a few more spot welds)? I think I prefer the spot welds as opposed to the rivet protrusion on the inside of the caddy.
@AaronEngineering
@AaronEngineering 3 года назад
Yes they probably would. However I find these portable spot welders lack punch in the zincanneal sheetmetal. So we use aluminium pop rivets to ensure there is no failure. Cheers 🍻. Aaron

Well done mate 👍 Whose bending gear? I tried to make/use a ‘DIY’ bender to do a bench top out of 1.6mm Aluminium. Only a 24mm turn-down.... but too much for the 1” angle iron Jury Rig 🥴. Do... got it to 45, and then hammered it down to 90 over the edge of Humung 600kg Jig Table. Actually, the ‘hammered’ surface looks quite decorative 😂😂😂😂. Regards Robert

Hi Aaron... This video is great and is something I want ti implement into my metal classroom for them students to use. I was just doing a manufacturing drawing to match up with the measurements on the video.... Can I ask you a question?... The main body in the video is 400x400 and then you fold a 10mm safety edge and 110mm sides so the base is 160mm but the end pieces the base is 200mm wide. Am I reading it wrong? I could change the body to 440x400 but that would not fit as nice on a 1200 wide sheet. Regards. Digby
@AaronEngineering
@AaronEngineering 2 года назад
Hey Digby. I made a mistake. The sides are only 100mm including the 10mm folded safety edge. We used to make them longer from a 440mm sheet, but found we had too much waste. That's why we changed it. Here is the Fusion360 solid 3D model. It was done in sheetmetal, so you can download it and open each piece up individually as flat pattern or folded shape. Cheers, Aaron. a360.co/3GKNYnY

Hey buddy how’s things? To be honest, if I didn’t have to film it and the sheetmetal was already cut I reckon I could knock one up in under an hour. It’s a great sturdy little project. @@AaronEngineeringOh yeah that makes sense it might not translate... Kennedy tool boxes are the Brown colored sheet metal boxes that you see in most American machine shops. to include both sides hem and seam allowances.

Hi mate. I made a mistake with the sides. The base sheet is 400x400. 10mm safety fold and then side fold is 100mm down. (90mm from the 10mm safety fold). Hope this helps. Oh, the CAD 3D model can be downloaded direct from the description area. Cheers, Aaron.
