Good idea but I think I would have put the bolts in from the back and secured them with a large washer and wingnut of some sort for easy access.. Just a thought.
The placement is great. Rear view is not blocked. I wonder if some velcro straps would hold them right. Because unscrewing them when you are stuck is a task.
If you had a cargo basket that's above the spare tire you could use the sides of the basket to another mounting bracket to make it more secured. I'm planning on making one for my JK or just use it for my Rotopax..
We went the same route with repurposing. Used the roto pax 4 gal hinge mount ( we're really bad impulse buyers). Had to fab a new mount points ( aftermarket hinges), using 1/2" bolts through the carrier with wing nuts and a lynch pin (just in case things get loose) No issue with door swing, out of the way and easy to get to.
Gobi Racks sell locking knobs (there are probably other suppliers too). I like your idea but I will try it with the bolts installed from the inside (like others have mentioned) with a nut on the outside to hold the bolt in place. Then the locking knob on the outside of the traction boards
Storage for everything always a issue, when I bought my Defender I had only 1 child, now I have 3, solo trips is fine but with 3 kids & a dog it’s challenging. My systems have change numerous times & I’m currently deciding where to put my max trax boards too !!
I've been playing around with all kinds of different ideas and I have moved stuff around so many times to find that perfect solution. I honestly think it's one of the things I love most about traveling and camping. Every time you go on a trip it's like a big puzzle that you have to put together and you don't know if it works or not until you're on the road.
I wanted to check in and see how the homemade traction board mount has faired since being installed for 2yrs and after some real- time road and trail use. Did you find the small frame connection to be fine and how was the wiggle factor because of it? thanks in advance!
Move boards other side of the door when you open the tailgate it’s going to knock the tail lights , also those bolts are backwards they are facing into the tread of the tire your going to need new tire once that’s tightened up and the air starts flopping those boards have the nuts to the inside and the extra length of the bolt facing away from the tire !! 👍
Great video and what timing. Just ordered some boards preparing for our 2 wk overland trip mid month. Already have a 23 Zero RTT, our 270 Awning just arrived and looking at either a 7 or 10 gal water storage (undecided for size). Was actually researching vids when I came upon yours. Great idea and new subscriber. Keep the shiny side up, talk later...thank you!!
@@roamingwithjosh so when the gladiators came out on the market . I was all for it ! They looked awesome . And I was thinking man I could so see my self over landing in this bad girl. How ever after I bought it. I started to see that. It's just a truck with more mods options. The only real cargo space I could use was the back seat if I took out the seats. I then added gose gear or what ever you call it for the lockable storage system 90/40 split. The other storage area was the tailgate area which reminded me hey its weather exposed so either have waterproof bags or cargo for the back or buy the whole top system again feeling like a truck that I already have just a better tactical looking truck . So the next option for me was to add a system to the top of the tailgate I went and spent another few grand on buying everything. The tent fitted perfectly on top and now the truck looked incredibly awesome. So I spent a week up north living out of it. This is when it started to fall down hill. The performance of the truck was way to stiff and the length was an issue at points of doing some rock climbing with all the gear and pinch points just sucked. We had some seriously wet cold nights and the fridge I had running that I wanted to be under the tailgate system had to be moved inside which then took up most of the room. In the back. And I wasn't able to get into the storage i had now for the back. . So the truth was that unless it was weather proof nothing can be in the back of the truck. Normal kitchen and refrigerator that you see some folks running out the back of their jeeps had to be in the cabin back seat. So the week i had living out of her sucked i thought of another idea i seen a video on a Australian crew called 4wheel drive great series great product reviews but I really loved Shawn's system for his dirty 30. The back of his truck was lifted and replaced with a metal utility truck look. Where he had all his stuff stored inside. Which i looked up it's so expensive to have something like that installed and at this point i have already spent to much . So i traded her in for a brand new 23 miles jeep wrangler unlimited sport. Basic and with all the money i had saved i gutted her out and took what i already had and everything works . I bought a gobi rack which is a life saver. Jeep was the best option for cargo space by far. And gas and performance with off roading was so much better. Sorry for the long message. Have you guys thought about the extension add on making your jeep longer with a pop up tent I forgot who made it but I heard it gives you like 2 or 4 more feet of cargo space and it makes the jeep look like a safari truck
Hey, dude! We still have the JL and will still be using this on our trips when we take the JL. This little contraption has held up extremely well and doesn't really make any additional noise at all.
Hey, dude! It's not loud at all and it doesn't rattle. I'm extremely surprised how well this thing has held up over time. I have had no issues with this set up at all. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I'm sure there is, but I figured I would be able to make it work with what we had and it also kept us from spending any more money on new mods! I've been driving around with it on the jeep for the last few days to see how it holds up before we take off and get too far away from home and so far so good!
nice video ! I find the idea interesting to reuse this support. then the road and off road test ?? :) Are there sounds of little birds behind the wrangler?
Just found you . Thanks the video. Just a heads up . I have my own Channel Rubicon Roamers and will be soon doing a video to yours on this, but a much faster and more secure instal off the rock slide engineering system. You were close. Your only downfall was the hardware you choose. I will be sending a link in my video on the hardware. It will be a fast release on the traction boards without taking the entire strap off. Please subscribe, brother. Cheers
So it takes 15min to take them off to use, and then 30 min to reattach. Maybe you should just get a winch? But please don't install it. For the love...
Thank you for your comment, that was the most helpful thing I've ever been told. Your compelling wisdom is beyond my simple minded comprehension. Please be sure to take the time to continue commenting on RU-vid to further your reach of brilliance.
