I love the idea of using a heart shaped glass container. It is also a bonus to be able to use a container you already have on hand! I am sure it will be beautiful!
A lovely display…I think it’s important to point out that succulents are not the same as cactus and they have similar but not identical requirements. Succulents need light but most don’t do well in bright sun. They also like tight spaces and don’t grow very fast making them a great selection for terrariums. They also need some water and a weekly very light mist will keep them healthy. If you do add a layer of sand make sure it’s not the fine, sandbox sand, rather a type that has a rougher grain as it will provide the drainage property that is the purpose of the sand.

I love what you did with your succulents! They look so pretty. However, I would like to know how I supose to water them and not destroy the decor... Do you use a syringe or something? Please let me know! :) Thank you for the tips!
Just be aware that most of these plants, if well cared for, will outgrow your terrarium and need to be transplanted into separate pots or larger planters.
Beautiful...just the tutorial I was looking for!....gonna make a couple of these as end of the school year gifts...thank you for this it was most informative! :)
This is the definition of a terrarium a vivarium for smaller land animals, especially reptiles, amphibians, or terrestrial invertebrates, typically in the form of a glass-fronted case. a sealed transparent globe or similar container in which plants are grown. "SEALED"
Campers OR similar container, you didn't read that part? if you look up pictures most aren't sealed so they are still terrariums even if they're not sealed :)
The leaves on my zebra plant are starting to face down. They use to all be standing straight up, but now they look like their looking at the floor. I water it once every two weeks and I don't understand what's happening....I also noticed you have a small mammillaria elongata. Ive had mines for a couple months now. I live in Miami so my weather is very different for what cactuses like. I have them all indoors at an east side window. So I'm not really sure when it's dormant period is. I've stopped watering it and will start to water around February to get it to bloom. Suggestions? Thank you! :)
Reshma Rajan These terrariums are horrendous. A cactus needs a pot with a hole at the bottom to drain as this will not drain even with rocks at the bottom. All it does is looks aesthetically pleasing.
Love your tutorial. Wondering if you could give us an idea of the quantities of soil, pebbles and charcoal that you are using for your container. I'm trying to plan out materials for a group event.
thank you so much. Do you not need moss as a barrier between the charcoal and soil? I figured I wouldn't want my soil to seep through but I also don't want it to maintain moisture so I'm confused haha.
Excellent question. I agree, it is confusing! What I found works best for Desert Terrariums is to layer the rocks, activated charcoal, and dirt with NO moss. Because your cacti and succulents don't require a lot of water you don't need to worry as much about the soil seeping down to the rocks. The moss is great at maintaining moisture in a Tropical Terrarium which is why I use a layer of the moss in my Tropical Terrarium tutorial. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment!
Emilie Lefler You can use a round piece of landscaping fabric as a barrier layer in succulent terrariums. For that matter, you could probably even use a circle cut from an old shirt or pants.
Hello I recently purchased a Moon Cactus from a hardware store and I didn't loosen up the soil as much or if at all like yourself before I placed it in its clay pot somewhat submerged in the same mix as yours. Will Jared (my plant) be okay? I watered it until it dripped out the drainage hole and placed it in a shaded area for the five days recommended. Is food necessary for the plant? I was also recommended a spray that was apparently packed with nutrients
I had a question regarding the environment these cactus can live in. I live in a basement that was renovated into a living area. Its very cold and rarely is warming by itself (only by heaters) and we have no see-thru windows or direct sun light anywhere in the basement. I love cactus and green leafed plants. I have tried some cactus in regular small pots that I have bought them in but as a result they would die. Would you recommend this type of small terrariums could maybe live and last in my type of living space?
+Samantha Hesuse Sounds like it might just be too cold for them down there. They also need more light than you can provide for them without special lighting. You should check out this link for more information on how you can properly care for them in your situation :) www.reddit.com/r/cactus/wiki/index
+Jordan Pilgrim Great question. I haven't ever done a terrarium in a curvy vase so I am not quite sure. I suppose it would depend on the exact shape of the vase. You just want to be sure that there is room for the layers at the bottom for the rocks and activated charcoal. If you make a terrarium with a curvy vase I would love to hear how it turns out! Thank you for watching!
emmm how to water them?? I'm planning to get some by getting the fresh stalk of everything (my friend has some succulents plant and I'm about to ask them one fresh stalk of it) instead of the one that already has a root on it, do i have go plant them separately first until the root grows?
Dear Emilie Lefler, There is four question that i want to ask: -Can i use the normal charcoals for barbequeing? -Do you need to water it? -How many times do you need to water it? ( like once a day?) -And how does the water exits the glass after watering it? Thank you, -Charlie Arthur
Charlie Arthur Hi! Great questions! - No, you cannot use normal charcoal for barbecuing. Activated charcoal is quite different than regular charcoal. If you can't seem to find it (pet stores usually carry it!) just leave it out. - Terrariums need to be watered, but not very often. I water mine lightly when I plant it and then check it weekly to see if there is any moisture in the bottom of the container. If there is no moisture in the bottom and the top is dry to touch, it is time to water it. Water lightly! Be careful not to overwater! - The water actually exits the glass by evaporating back up through the dirt. This is why it is so important NOT to overwater! My cactus terrariums are happy and healthy. Hope this helps! Thank you for watching!
I’m new to your channel, love the videos. I know its been a long time since doing this video but do you still have these succulents in the glass planter, and how long did it stay in there I like to get an update on it if you have
I love the tutorial. But if I may add one comment... Your really not supposed to "loosen up" the roots like that because when you repott your succulent their roots will branch out natural. If you loosen them up as you did, it could potentially break apart their roots in the process which could lead to them stunting their growth, stunting their growth permanently, (some succulents don't have the ability to regenerate their roots) if there's too much damage on their roots, them just dieing completely. So I would recommend when repotting just leave the extra dirt, it doesn't hurt anything.
Why no direct sunlight? What kind of lighting is required? Am creating a desert terrarium in a 20 gallon aquarium, and my city apartment is fairly dark. What kind of artificial light will I need?
+Steve Zisk Great questions! If you place your terrarium in direct sunlight it can cause the terrarium to get too hot for your plants. Partial sun is best. Some gardening centers sell "grow lights" for plants that can be used in places that don't get a lot of light. Hope this helps!
Kimberly Bonifacio Hi! Activated charcoal is different than the regular charcoal that is used for grilling. If you can't find activated charcoal you can easily leave it out. The charcoal is optional but HIGHLY recommended. The charcoal filters the water to keep it fresh and clean! Thanks for watching!
+rough rough Hi! I have never used desert sand in a terrarium and am not quite sure how it would work. You want to be sure that the soil you use has the proper nutrients for your plants. I suggest checking with a gardening center that sells soil for desert plants to be sure. Thank you for watching!
Thanks, we actually did a plant project 2-3 years ago as a homeschool science project. Unfortunately we pushed the seeds way to far down in the soil and we didn't get any plants....
It may sound stupid but in many old tales from my family history, every time we have many plants packed together to make basicly an ecosystem, It seems to draw in Paranormal creatures, ...Faeries, fairies I guess you would see, suprisingly they are more insect like/nomad people like.
+The Laughing Jack Depends on the type of plant. If you were listening during the video she said to make sure to read the description of each plant and make sure they need the same watering/light requirements.
