DIY ULTRA-LIGHT GROUNDSHEET | SO EASY TO MAKE ONE 

Very good video and I'm going to make one very shortly that's for sure! One important note here: "You can use whatever Tyvek paper you have". Tyvek is a brand name and it's what we call a "House Wrap". The correct thing to say is "You can use whatever House Wrap you have". Or can you? The answer is no. Not all house wraps are made the same. Tyvek is a single layer fabric with fibers in a criss-cross partern that makes it VERY puncture and tear resistant. Some others are a laminate of TWO sheets that split over time. And also, NOT using a criss-cross fibre patern. So stick to Tyvek as much as possible or make sure the other brand you're using has the same criss-croos fibre patern. Remember, you are NOT using that material for its primary intended use, therefore it'll be more prone to failure. So go for Tyvek or the same type. Not the others... On this, I'm going to cut a piece of the roll I have so I can make one of those Robert's chair-groundsheet!

Use a spoon and hard surface to smooth the tape and remove the air bubbles. This adds many times the strength. From a museum archivist.

I did that for my REI chair. Used some ultralight tarp material, then glued aluminum sheet circles with silicone caulk to the abrasion points. Added 25 grams to the chair to 16.5 oz pack weight. I sewed mine. Absolute (voice of experience) necessity: after the first corner, keep refitting the work to the chair. Do not try to measure and finish all at once... 😎 I know I'm not good enough!

Thought this was a great idea. Picked up a Tyvek mailer and tried it out. Learned that while Tyvek is highly tear-resistant, it is not indestructible. Took it to the front yard (grass) for a test set and immediately ripped off one of the corners. Back tot he drawing board. (I weigh 186 lbs.)

great video. Have you tried it on soft soil or sand? Snow and frozen ground is pretty hard.

good idea if would work, I've used it during a bike-pack overnight trip on hard surface-dirt in the camp ground, and it was ok, then I've tried it on a back pack overnighter in Michigan's Northdunes trail and won't work for sand, the tyvek will hold but the gorilla tape will stretch and get undone because of the stress due to legs wanted to dig into the sand and the mid portion staying on the top of the sand.

I saw another RU-vidr that used tarp for a similar build. My thought was, why not use Tykek to make it even lighter. You’ve done it! What is that 80 year old ruler you have? That’s pretty nice.

Have you tried wrapping the base on the retracted chair?will it function well as the chair's sack? It can save weight if you leave the sack at home
