Good Job. Nice Projekt. For those who do not have the ground sheet Material: Use on of those blue IKEA bags. The Material is very strong and the floor is exactly the size you need for the 'inner tub'. Just add some gorilla tape for structure. Done. Nice extra for me: the color matches perfectly with the helinox blue....
I like yours better than the commercial version because it can act as a waterproof tray under my chair. I might make one with a small snapped pocket that can hold my headlamp, lighter, and other camp essentials while sitting around the fire. Thanks for the inspiration
Your design is brilliant! Didn't have an expendable tarp, but after a construction job, I had FeltBuster roof underlayment paper and FlexTape. We'll see how that goes in the field, on the beach and rocks. The roof underlayment is super lightweight, and has high tensile strength. Thank you, and I agree that the ground sheet by Helinox is overpriced for the use-case.
Fantastic! Please keep me posted on how yours performs for you. Thank you for letting me know you made one. That is going to make a huge difference in performance for your chair. Enjoy!
Great advice man, I don’t understand why this video did not get more views it’s FREAKING AWESOME!!!! Such a simple yet effective design. Thanks again great video
I made this and used it snow camping. Worked perfectly on top of deep snow that had been stamped down with snowshoes. Thanks for the video. I weigh 230 so it will work for pretty much everybody.
Glad to hear it is working out for you. That is awesome. They work great. I was just using mine on a winter camping trip in the mountains. It has yet to let me down. Thank you for letting me know you made one. I am sure you will get much use out of it. Mine is still going strong. Thanks for watching Mark! Cheers
Go for it! I have seen people do that since I made this video. They work well, lightweight, but they do tend to fail at a quicker rate. Regardless, a worthy modification.
Haven't read through the comments yet but another good thing is that you essentially made it way more Waterproof. So say you are hiking in...or have it strapped to a pack or in a water bottle holder. If it's raining while you're hiking and stops when you get to where you want to camp then you have a dry chair ready to go
What an ingenious idea! Thanks for sharing. I love that the tub bottom serves as a clean space that can protect a book or electronics from dirt and moisture!
I made one of these for my camp chair this weekend and tried it out in the backyard on some packed down snow. It worked very well! I'm looking forward to giving it a better test on a short backcountry trip in a few weeks. Thanks for the idea!
Awesome! Glad to hear it! Mine is over a year old now. Still trucking along. It is an awesome little DIY project. I have faith you will get a lot of good use out of it.
Thank you for the tip and the details on construction. I have so many excess tarps I couldn't bring myself to throw away. I'm glad to have a new use for them (other than dragging stuff to the scrap pile).
So, yeah man, I did it and it worked! Thanks a bunch! Instead of a tarp, I used a dogfood bag. Also I made the walls lower and I can wrap it all inside the Helinox stuff sack. It came out to 2.6 oz. I need another go at it. Yours is still a little prettier. 😁👍
To all the American youtuber. Nearly the complete world uses metrical units. Please press during the measuring once the unit button on the scale. So everybody knows the weight.
In the UK we use both, so inches are fine, but it's usually metric here but old habits die hard.. But yeah I did have to Google what 1.5 inches was in cm!
That is awesome! I would like to make one from tyvek, but I can't seem to kill mine. lol. I am sure you will get a lot of use out of that. Keep me posted on how that works out for you please.
This would absolutely save you some weight. I plan to make more out of different materials to see just how light I can get it. Let me know if you try it. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers
Yes! Being the ground sheet also serves as the case, it's one less thing to keep track of. Sometimes less is more! Thank you for watching and commenting. Let me know what you think of it if you make one.
It's kinda funny because I filmed the process and ended up not using it in the first video. I felt like it really interrupted the flow of the video, and I didn't want the video to be too long. So I just took it all out. I never would have done a how to video on it. Thought never crossed my mind. Looking back on it, it seems like the obvious direction to go, But it didn't come to me. The video really was inspired by a viewer comment. Pretty cool. I hope you are having a great holiday weekend
Do it! You are going to notice a huge difference! I am looking forward to hearing about your experience with it. I am 100% confident that you will be quite pleased
Great MYOG project. I own the Helinox Chair One with a ground sheet from Helinox, but I'll be making my own (possibly) from a Ikea Bag, since I don't have leftover tarp scraps!
Yes. I aim to make a much lighter one that I will put a bit more time and effort into. This is a first attempt. And it is still working like a charm. Just used it for a 3 day trip in the mountains that I just got back from. The next one will be of lighter material, and I will try sewing it
No harm in trying. Not a bad idea to give it a practice run and see how much you can get out of it. The one I made is over 2 years old now and still going strong! I just returned from an 8 day canoe trip and I was using it the whole week. One of the chair legs finally pushed through a corner on the trip. I slapped on a piece of duct tape and it got me through the trip without fail after that.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods if not I have a 'bag for life' heavy duty bag I can use,a bit like a IKEA bag, not sure it's the right size though. I'll have to wait til the chair arrives to check actual footprint.
I can't recall if I put in measurements or not. I don't think I did, because I just trace the outline of the footprint directly from the chair onto the tarp. This DIY project is awesome. Makes a huge difference. Mine is still going strong
That would work. But I am not sure the groundsheet would roll up and grab itself if I made it that way. I think an experiment is in order......I plan to make some out of lighter material. I will make one the way you suggested.
@@ItsGoodintheWoods You could add some velcro maybe for keeping it rolled? I've found dual lock velcro quite nice for a lot of things, it's stronger and both sides are hard plastic instead of the regular hairy stuff that does not like dirt, lint and moisture.
$35 for the helinox ground sheet is pretty cheap haha. Let’s assume people don’t have scrap pieces of tarp laying around because they fucking don’t….sooooooo…..You’re going to spend at least $20 on a 6x8 tarp and then you’re going to ruin it by cutting it and then you’re relying on duct tape to hold it together which won’t fucking last at all so you’ll have to remake or retape all the time. Duct tape gets ruined by moisture and sun exposure. Then you’re adding stress to the tape by sitting on it. Suck it up and spend $30-$35 haha. “Dur I’m someone who thinks they are smart but actually super dumb”. The helinox ground sheet comes with a 5 year warranty too. An extra $10 or so to get a quality, sturdy, and 5 year warrantied product is a fucking no brainer. Skip 1 meal if $10 is sooooo hard to come by for you dude haha.
You have $35 to throw away on something that actually costs a fraction of that at Decathlon (I bet the one for their chair would happily fir the Helinox) and even cheaper if you make it yourself? Cool story bro.
@@AntwonDaBusiness it's actually in my name? Or did you miss the fact my channel and name is called 'Hard Up Hiker (Broke Backpacker)'? No shame here in being poor. Working class and proud. Whereas I smell toxic privilege in your comments.... And no, I can't afford a Helinox, I am using this on a much cheaper and heavier version, cos I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a chair.
What a great idea!!!!! That is what I love about the youtube machine! The sharing of ideas !LOL ! You just took the groundsheet to another level. I wish I had thought of that and put it in the video.........Next time......
Great video! You deserve more views, and I'll check out your channel after this. Question though: what is a "drop" (?) fro a tarp, as you called it. and how did you have one kicking around for free? Should I buy a certain style tarp just for cutting up?
Thanks man. A "drop" is a piece of tarp that is cut out from the original tarp. In this case, it was a scrap piece of tarp that I kept from a project I did a few years ago. I made a hot tent from a tarp, and I kept the scrap pieces because I suspected I could use them for patches on the tent if need be. Came in quite handy for this chair project. This is an awesome DIY project. But, it only makes sense if you have some sort of material laying around so you don't have to buy anything. Thanks for stopping by Ron. I hope you enjoy some of the other content as well.
Followed your steps exactly and it works perfectly. Bit rough and ready, but free and it all fits in the bag. I'm glad I didn't throw the old gazebo tarp out. I knew it would be handy one day. Thank you
Thanks for this. I just finally got a chair, so I'll be going tomorrow to get a tarp to cut up. I might just one-up the idea and make a strap to actually secure it all together once rolled up! Thanks again. You just earned a new sub!
Let me know how it works out for you. Mine is still in use to this day. A worth while diy project. To bad you didn't have some scrap pieces laying around, or an old tarp to cut up. Thank you for subscribing to the channel. I appreciate your support
Thank you very much Justin. Awesome. Inspiring. Very happy to learn about this for my little ole Zero chair. I’d been looking online tonight without luck to finally cave in buy one of these. I so jazzed to happen upon your great vid looking for something else. Cheers. Happy trails to you. 🙏🏼🐾🎶 Stay safe.
I am glad you found the video to be of use! This is a worthwhile project. Mine is still going strong well over a year later! Thank you for letting me know you found the video. Much appreciated. Please let me know how it works out for you. Cheers!
I am glad to hear it worked out for you. Mine is still going strong You can send pictures to my email If you want to send some. Itsgoodinthewood@gmail.com
I’m thinking I might try to make one, but instead of removing the small squares from the corners, just cut one side and sew it. Do you think it would still need the tape around the rim to be sturdy enough to hold the legs? If so, maybe double the width of the fabric rim and fold it over to beef that up?
The next one I make I will doing a bit different. More along the lines of what you just suggested. With a lighter material.... I wanted to see if the idea would even work at all. So I didn't put too much effort into it. Now I know it works...better than I anticipated. Time to get crafty and make it as good and as light as I possibly can! I'm excited about it! Good luck on your build! I am looking forward to hearing about what you come up with. Feel free to send pictures to my email. Thanks for watching Jon. Have a great weekend
@@ItsGoodintheWoods - Its been 8 months since you came up with this great idea! Just checking in to see if you have made any changes to the design, before I get involved in this project! Thanks for the diy hack!
@@scubahiker Still going strong! Used it last weekend! I have plans to make a lighter version.....but this one just wont quit. And it has been used a lot since I made it. It is a worthwhile project.
