I think basic DIY, electrical safety, should be teach in high school, with the use of mechanical tools for carpentry… as well as basic computing ( excel, web creation/design), basic cooking, basic tax return, basic job interview/negotiation skills…), meditation/ self care, basic car maintenance, how to create a budget/avoid debts, basic investment skills, how to project yourself/take risks, how to navigate medical healthcare/insurance…

I'd generally agree, car maintenance like oil change and replacing breaks. Although a lot of it is easy to learn online if you're willing to watch a half hour videos. But I think this sort of project shouldn't be encouraged for someone who doesn't really know what they're doing. Most people watching this likely have some intermediate-advanced project experience but I could easily see someone buying a house for the first time, cutting the supports and not replacing them with something structurally solid enough to hold everything. I'm kinda glad most people leave structural/plumbing/electrical work to professionals, because it's super easy for an amateur to kill themselves or cause expensive damage to their property.

A lot of schools have this. We had carpentry, automotive, cooking class/home economics. Now a few of the others you listed would absolutely be beneficial!
@JM-iz3fr
@JM-iz3fr 2 года назад
Some of those you mentioned used to be taught in schools - shop class for boys, home economics for girls. automotive, electricity, carpentry, etc were taught in high school. But that's when kids had an interest, it was not looked down on. Anyway, it's tough to offer many of those with the safety costs as well as interest. Boy scouts do offer some of those basics! Too much safety involved to afford

I’m surprised that whole closet didn’t have storage access under the stairs. This project was next level. Beginner project could’ve been knocking down the drywall inside the storage closet to claim the whole space under the stairs.

@@utahman3953 Yeah, like 4" x 1". He framed another wall up the middle, that should help. But I've set sooooo many of those same stairs. I hope everything on the second floor is light weight. A good electrician never hides a junction box in the wall. You should always add a junction box as if you were adding a receptacle. Just use a blank cover. That way years down the road an electrician won't have a nightmare trying to find an electrical issue that could be hidden in the wall. You won't always own that house.
@csimet
@csimet 2 года назад
Agreed. He also did not add proper strain relief / cable clamps to the box, allowing possible sharp edges to nick the cables. An arching issue just waiting to happen. Also... I'm not so sure that moving the stair support from the edge to the center is structurally a good idea and he should have consulted a building inspector. Those 2x4s along the edge are possibly load bearing.
@XBKLYN
@XBKLYN 2 года назад
@@csimet I think you're correct, they are load bearing....might have been better to use a beam along the bottom of the stairs where the 2x4s were removed and affix that to double 2x4s either end.

Not bad. Only thing you shouldn't of done was bury an electrical junction point in the wall. Not sure why you didn't go straight to the fridge outlet. Jump out to the light switch, and up to the light?
@rhtservicesllc
@rhtservicesllc 2 года назад
The wires that you ran in the metal junction box needs to have cable clamp connectors on them. Otherwise as the wires move, the insulation on them will wear down and could potentially lead to a short and the bare wire being exposed. Also it would be advisable to use plywood or drywall to keep the existing insulation in place because it will probably fall out over time.

Definitely wouldn't pass inspection. Looks nice, but isn't structurally sound. There's a reason contractors are licensed. I've spent my career fixing all the DIY projects since the big box stores opened. Here we were worried about losing work and all along homeowners are creating bigger jobs than we usually would get before the box stores. 📦
@wolfgtweb
@wolfgtweb 2 года назад
@@gklaus134 Not just a dumb idea but not to code. You can't hide a junction box inside a wall. Something like that is a major hazard along with the unprotected wires going into the box. (to the video creator): If you aren't afraid of doing electrical, that's fine. But at least be willing to learn how to do it safely/properly. Some idiot is going to see this and think this is the way it's done.

It's funny how so many are "concerned". Yes, the buried electrical box violates code. The cable should have been run directly from the other outlet box to the new outlet box, but is it going to spontaneously combust like many are saying? Probably not. Then there are all of the structural engineers here talking about the stairs not going to be strong enough on the edge. As and engineer, I would say that in a commercial building, more support would be needed, in a residential setting like this, with the existing and new structure, this will also likely be perfectly fine for the life of the home. These videos are edited down and we all likely didn't see every detail. The project looks nice and gives some good ideas for people, most of whom would never tackle it themselves. For those that do, do it how you need to do it.

Amazing how you are able to do everything so easily. Came out great. Of course the easiest use of under stairs space would be to increase the depth of the closet, Sheetrock, built in cabinet, or a safe, and add lighting, for more storage. What you created was challenging but beautiful.

Don’t get me wrong it looks really nice! Looks are a 9.5/10! That electrical work is scary though. Highly illegal no mater what state you live in; 2 hidden junctions with no access and no one will ever know they are there since you sealed them behind a closet and a bar. Also no clamps on a metal box with non protected romex is a fire waiting to happen. Those wires will rub on the sharp edges of the metal box as people go up and down the stairs, if that arcs there is the start of a house fire. Sad that all that nice finish work is ruined by electrical issues. I know after you decorated it you regretted putting the switch where you did, since it’s blocked cuz it’s too far back but hey it is what it is. Oh and I Lol’d every time I saw you working in flip flops! I was like, “my man is just chillin” no need for safety Lol. Looks like a very nice upgrade overall though.

Oh just as a word to the wise on how you could’ve avoided that with not much extra work. You could have just kept all of your connections inside the existing outlet boxes and inside the switch you installed. That would’ve made the job pass code electrically speaking since all of your connections would have been accessible and nothing would’ve been hidden in the wall.

Thank you for watching and for the comments. Yes, I ended up re-working the electricals so they weren't hidden behind the walls and are now romex protected. RU-vid doesn't allow me to edit the video, so I cannot update it to reflect these changes...

Definitely reinforcing it with 2 x 4 was more ideal than 2 x 2 !!!
