DIY VESA Gaming Monitor Arm for only $15 | Homemade Gaming Gear

Why spend $50, $100, maybe even $200 on a standard VESA mounted monitor arm, when you can make your own for less than $15 and in less than an hour. Here is a quick DIY tutorial on how I assembled a homemade monitor arm with a homemade VESA mount plate, for a 32" monitor, using nothing but scrap wood and a handful of hardware bits from a local hardware store. Apologies for the inconsistent audio and shabby clothing, but much like this project, this tutorial was a bit tossed together.

Haha. Indeed, it turns out my fieldstone basement comes off quite medieval in my earlier videos. I'll likely move my studio back down there someday, but hopefully not until it is finished. Or at the very least, warmer during the winter months.

If the screws are too short, just pre drill a hole about a 1/3 thru the 2x4 then drill the screw in a little more than normal and now you have a pocket for your screw that's just the right size and hidden.

You might want to put some kinda counterweight on the table. with everything, all in that one corner will make it top-heavy! Even thou the TV and power strip is light I'd still counter the weight so it's more level and won't tip over when you bump into the table!
@HowToRollDice
@HowToRollDice 4 года назад
If the table was any lighter I certainly would, but luckily, it's very heavy to begin with, so I'm only shift the center of mass a tiny bit. Food for though though for anyone planning their own setup.

That is actually a studio light. It's for filming and photography. They range from cheap to insanely priced depending on what you need, but the setup I have is actually very powerful and affordable. It essentially comes in 2 pieces. The light itself, which is a daylight balanced LED chip light, and the soft box, which is the large circular attachment that softens and diffuses the light. I like Godox and Neewer (available on amazon or any photo/video site or store) for budget camera gear. I use the Godox SL-60W light, and the Neewer 36" softbox. Combined they come in under $200 and are a real workhorse team for photo/video.

@@HowToRollDice solitary carpenter bees. A bit bigger than a bumble bee. Will drill a hole in the wood about the thickness of a finger and lay eggs. Then more bees come out. If you are unlucky like my father, he cut the wood and found one sleeping in the hole. It was a surprise. Might be a good idea to get the ones with the nails. Surprises under leaves aren't fun. Those bees drill into your house as well. I'm constantly shooting them down.

What are the screws you use for the tv Veda mount
@HowToRollDice
@HowToRollDice 4 года назад
I don't recall off the top of my head, but it will be unique to the TV you are mounting and the material you are mounting it to. The threading and size of the screws will likely be M4x10mm. But the length will be up to your setup. You generally want to add 1/2" or 15mm to the thickness of your mounting material. So if you are using 1" or 25mm thick board, you would want a screw length of 1.5" or 40mm.

How did you not notice the crooked angle of the hinge axis in relation to the vesa points when you mounted the hinge to your wood bracket? =) Also you could've just put a paper on the back of your screen and traced the vesa holes directly off the holes, instead of printing some drawing from the internet..

The Idea was great and you get a 10/10 its execution as a DIY'er was laughable, from the time you set the first piece of Ply on the back of the monitor I knew where this was going, It wasn't cut square so when you set the hinge It was obvious (to me) That your monitor would be leaning to the left So Sorry , You get a Big Fat Zero

Not at all. People who don't mess around with woodworking or furniture-making often underestimate the strength of wood. Even simple cheap construction lumber, which, where I come from is pine. I could throw a couple of screws into a pair for 2x4s and hang from it myself, 250 lbs, and it would hold. The monitor in question here is 5lb at most.

Trust me you're not alone. I have a solid case of engineer brain, so I'm always breaking devices and objects down into their simplest form in my head and wondering how I could most efficiently replicate them for less than market price. This kicked into overdrive when my wife and I bought our home, a 250 year old french farm house. For example, a proper kitchen butchers block costs about $1000 on most nice sites. I looked at a few, determined how to assemble a basic design, and built my wife one for about $50. It's not perfect, and I'm sure I could do a better job now than I did then, but that's true of any practiced skill. And the point is I know no how to make a butcher block.

@HowToRollDice
@HowToRollDice 3 года назад
An interesting take. How much do you think you could get it down to? I figure at the very least you need: 2' 2X4 (though normally the shortest you can buy is 6') = $3 1'x1' square of plywood (though normally sold in sheets of 4'x4') = $3 A sturdy hinge with hardware = $3 Some woodscrews (12pc is normally the lowest count) = $3 Some machine screws (12pc is normally the lowest count) = $3 Obviously if you have these things lying around like I did, you won't have to pay much out of pocket, but they still have value. I can't see getting the price much below $15, but I'd love to get a write-up of any improved cost saving measures. We could make it a little engineering challenge. Who can make the cheapest yet still functional VESA stand. Also, thanks for watching! :)

Haha. Not quite no. Though I live in a large old farm house with many rooms, when my wife and I were looking for a home, we failed to factor in that she would become a Twitch streamer and need her own studio and at the same time I would launch a RU-vid channel and also need my own studio. At this point I had converter one of our basements into a temporary studio. I've since moved up into one of the spare rooms in the house, which is much nicer. The downside is, as we grow our family over the next 3 to 5 years, I'm going to lose my studio to a child, so by then I'll hopefully have finished one or both of the basements into a nice functional space.
