Video tutorial on how to replace the battery and complete disassembly of a Volkswagen key fob. The disassembly includes how to open the case, remove the battery, circuit board, and buttons. During disassembly, some remote may need to be reprogrammed if the vehicle’s module does not remember this particular key you are working with. This keyless remote is found in the years of 2002 to 2009 and the models include Beetle, Golf, Jetta, Bora, and Passat. Part number HLO 1J0 959 753 DC & HLO 1J0 959 753 AM. This particular tutorial was done on a 2004 Volkswagen Golf.

You can swap the parts directly over with no problems at all... The worst case scenario would be you having to reprogram the fob, which can be done yourself. Just make sure that one of your door key locks do work and aren't seized. But this only applies if your vehicle forgets the coat for that key fob. You most likely won't have any issues though.

Thank you so much for this video tutorial. I purchased a used Passat and the key never worked. I was gonna take it to the dealer, but only God knows how much they would have charged me to do something so simple. 5 minutes of my time and $1, and I'm good to go. Once again, thank you. :-)

Yes the hatch lock should work. That key with the little wrench sounds like the valet key. So it only works in the doors and ignition but not in the glove box and I believe hatch. As for the sunroof drains, here's a thread I found explaining the locations forums.vwvortex.c o m /showthread.php?3191023-Sunroof-drain-cleaning-with-pictures (remove spaces). No problem, glad to help out :)

Your key needs to be reprogrammed into the car. It is possible that the key you disassemble wasn't the car's original key, therefore it has a different code. Once you replace the battery, it resets the fob therefore you have to reprogram the key. Follow the directions on here to reprogram your fob w w w .myturbodiesel.c o m/1000q/a4/vw-smart-key-remote-replacement. h t m (removed spaces)
@4DIYers

In order to program your new key fob you will need another key which works in the car. I think you should be able to use your valet key if you have one. Just go to this link here which has step by step instructions w w w .myturbodiesel.c o m/1000q/a4/vw-smart-key-remote-replacement. h t m (removed spaces) About half way down the page.

Here is a tutorial for the upgrade forums.vwvortex.c o m /showthread.p h p?2941881 (remove spaces) You can actually reprogram the key yourself as long as you have a working door lock. But if you have to get a key cut, that can be costly.

Unfortunately I haven't worked with the previous model key fob... Your best bet would be to go on a VW forum such as VWVortex and make a thread there and see if anyone responds.

It may or may not work depending on the year of your MKIV. If the car doesn't recognize the key, it will start and then shut down right away.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 12 лет назад
Just cut away the little plastic rivet pieces in the corners with a knife or very small drill bit... Then glue in the board in the new case.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 12 лет назад
You have to swap the demobilize chip from the old fob to the new fob. The only way to disable it as far as I know is through VAGCOM.

It's just a sliding fit in the case. You should be able to slide in a small flat screw driver along side it and pop it out.

If it opens up the same way, then I would assume it's the same, but I'm not 100% sure though. I know there is a few different variations of this fob that look identical, but they are held together differently.

Yea. Mine looks very similar but that central seam doesn’t follow al the way around. It’s definitely only half way (the back non button side)
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 12 лет назад
@tigre909 Sorry for the late reply... You might be able to pull it apart and dry the components out in the inside. Some of the electronic might have also shorted out in the inside, so it'll be too hard to repair. I would think you should be able to purchase one of those ebay fobs, swap your key over, and reprogram it according to your car. Although I'm not 100% sure if this would work with reprogramming the new fob though.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 12 лет назад
@brightbr I believe you can buy just the buttons on Ebay. You would have to remove the circuit board itself by cutting away the little plastic nubs in the corner holes on the circuit it. After you would have to glue the circuit board back in.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 11 лет назад
The key fob? Should be able to purchase one off Ebay.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 12 лет назад
@laronwilliams16 You would have the cut out the small plastic pieces which work like rivets at the corners of the circuit board. Then you would probably have to glue it into the new fob case.

As for your seized door lock... Sometimes you can get a good quality penetrating oil which will unseize the lock. But if it's too bad, it'll need to be replaced. Friend of mine ordered a new lock assembly for his and I believe it was about $100 from the dealer. Now for reprogramming your key fob, you will need a working lock. You can use the lock on your hatch or if they're both seized, you can in behind the lock and push the micro switch manually.

Thank you for the video. I just put the key fob through the laundry. Duh! Didn't dig deep enough into the coat pockets. A little moisture in the battery compartment. Dried it out with Q-Tip and snapped it all back together. Still works.

The key fob itself might need to be reset. In section 3-1, page 29 of my owner's manual there is a paragraph about resetting the key. To reset the code, Press button A or button C one time for one second. The vehicle remains locked. The control unit recognizes only one key code via the master key. Lock or unlock the vehicle with the master key. The resetting procedure is now complete. A is the bottom button to unlock and C is the top to lock.

@dntcd The spring should clip in the button mark of the key. There is a tab which sticks past the outside diameter of the spring(shown at the pics in the end of the video), that part goes into the plastic casing.

For those who bought Chinese knock off keyfob housings, only the quarter section below the VW emblem needs to be pried loose to access the battery compartment. Boca Lupo.

Thank you very much for the clear explanation. I did it at first time and you helped me a lot! It was clear how to separete the up and bottom part, but then I stopped and did not find any mark to split the half into two pieces (2nd separation). Then I found this video. At the side I used a mini crowbar (wider than a screwdriver appr. 10,5 mm wide) and it worked. Thumbs up! :)

At $158 per hour of "labor", I would want that job. It's like they're obstetricians. Labor. Right. The last time I took my older VW to the dealership, there was a woman in the customer waiting area. The Service Advisor called her to tell her she needed to have a light bulb replaced on her car. The anticipated charge: $65.00.

Thank you for the video. I was having trouble with my remote fob, and I needed to read the FCC ID reference numbers, which is why I tuned to your video. Then, while I had the first part open, I decided to put in a fresh battery CR2032, which turned out to be missing from my battery "inventory". I'm one of those who doesn't like to wait until a battery operated device conks out before buying a battery for it. Anyway, while I looked, my VW fob sat without the battery inserted. When I reassembled the fob and tried it, it had corrected itself. Prior to that, it would not unlock the car. It would just lock it. Computerized gadgets are wonderful, but they can go bat$#÷+ for no apparent reason. At times like that, walking up to your car to put the key in the doorlock doesn't seem like such an inconvenience.

Thank you! My 2009 Scirocco 2.0 TDI would not unlock. Thought I would change the battery in key fob. Followed another video for '2009 onwards Scirocco' only to find the key fob was different. My key fob matches the fob in this video. Knowing I had the same key gave me the confidence to apply more pressure to open up. All sorted in a couple of minutes and tested out OK. I have had my Scirocco for 14 years and 136,000 miles now and have not had to change the battery before. Think I should complain to VW 🤣.

Hint for anyone who might have arrived here with an "immobil activated" message on their dashboard: If your mechanic tries to tell you the battery in the key fob has run low, he's wrong - the battery in the fob has nothing to do with the immobiliser - it only serves to transmit a signal to lock/unlock the car. The immobiliser reads an RFID chip inside the key that doesn't need a battery. So it would read it just the same with no battery in the key. I found a surprising amount of people suggest the key fob battery for this fault.

My key fob suddenly does not open the doors. It opens the trunk and the alarm but not the doors. Is it the battery getting weak or is my key fob dying? Never mind... I just figured it out. I put the key in the door and held it in the lock position. Then I unlocked the door with the key in the door. Voila! It now unlocks the doors.
