Anyone else have the issue where your sitting there at like 1 am with a couple videos queued up and you say "I'll watch these then go to bed" and then your sitting there hours later with more videos queued than when you started?

Nice table. I used 3/8" flat stock for my "portable" setup, it's a nice compromise between rigidity and weight. I leave them stacked up against a wall and when I need them, I set up a pair of folding saw horses. Not as quick to set up as a portable table but it works well and is pretty flexible.

I’ve watched this video more than 20 times. Dissecting that table build. Guess what.... it’s a great design. Especially the top. I have started my own version of your table. 1/2” x 6” x 40” plates, using 4x 1-2” x 3” bolts on each plate. I’m also using a 3/16” x 1” x 2” channel for the bolts. I will be making a few changes to everything below the top though to more suite my personal applications. But I’m general... I really love this design. Really glad you posted this video!

What a great idea to be able to level the top. I used this same concept, but I used 1.5x1.0 tubing instead of flat plate for the top AND I originally used "u" channel, but it sagged on me. It wasn't super thick "u" but I never thought it would have sagged, so I replaced it with 1/4" square tube. Works great. Thanks for the idea! I am getting ready to make a change to it so I can fold the legs in and then keep it out of the way in the garage.

I personally love the overdesign I've done similar things with some of my drawers made of wood because I'm sick and tired of things creeping over time and have no interest and trying to fix something after the fact. You'll be able to correct any drift later with those set screws and yes you can't use that table as an anvil but that wasn't the point was it. Elegantly complex is wonderful to watch

Should have notched out the sides on the channel section, then the table legs and table top would be stronger and end would be blanked in , also heat input on stainless will distort over time, you might also want to brace on the undersides of those plates, also did you use 309 filler on your adjusting bolts?? The welds might crack if you haven't, if you run a long steel rule across the diagonally you probably have high and low spots from welding the stainless steel plates and adjusting bolts
@MakingStuff
@MakingStuff 6 лет назад
It's not perfectly flat, but it is more than adequate for the type stuff I build. I did use 309 filler on the bolts. Thanks for the input and thanks for watching.

What a bloody good concept and even better fabrication! Brilliant! Have you noticed in the shots of you on the drill press how much deflection you are getting on the table as you drill? Is it floor mounted of on a bench? If on a bench then you could rig up an engineers jack under the table to prevent this, if however a floor mounted one then the only thing to do is find out where the flex is occurring, and fix it. It's in all likeliness to be the pillar tube being too thin, put a solid one in it! Sorted!
@MakingStuff
@MakingStuff 5 лет назад
It is a floor mounted drill press. I don't have it bolted down because I need to move it from time to time. It does rock back and forth a bit when I use it because the floor is not level.
@samrodian919
@samrodian919 5 лет назад
Making Stuff I could see it rocking around the clock ( pun intended) but it was the table deflection I was thinking about, as that's the cause of things not fitting properly when you are sure you drilled it accurately on a drill press but the hole ends up pissed. Watch your video back again Bob and see how much the table moves, certainly the whole thing moves around due to the uneven floor but you can see the deflection as you put pressure on the drill bit.

A couple of questions, I am not a welder but I do need to make a welding table for doing repair work on my farm equipment. Do you find the thickness of this table top is sufficient to support projects with out warping from weight? Have you found a need to have fixture holes in addition to the open space between the slats? Would you add or change the construction of this table? I find the more I think about what I might need it’s starting to look like I’m going to need a Flatbed to hold my welding table. Thank you for your time.
@MakingStuff
@MakingStuff 5 лет назад
I've put some large things on the table and welded on them with out issue. The only time it would be an issue is if I put something small and very heavy on it, otherwise the weight is spread out across all the slats. I have even stood on it to weld tall objects. If I need to, I can remove a slat or two to provide an opening. So far I have not needed to do this. If I built it again I'd spend the extra $ and get a little bit thicker material for the slats. I would have done this on the first build but I wanted stainless and it was hard for me to find and expensive. This was the most I could afford at the time.
@oh8wingman
@oh8wingman 5 лет назад
I've been a welder for over forty years and I would tell you right out that the top of this table is too flimsy to be of use in any welding shop I ever worked in. Since the price of stainless is normally 5 to 6 times what carbon steel costs you could have easily bought you 3/4 or 1 inch thick carbon steel instead and had cash left over. The problem with the material used is all it will take to ruin it is to drop one heavy piece on the table and bend those slats. Once bent, they are pretty much useless for keeping anything level not to mention that they would always be prone to flex when under load. There is no conceivable value in using stainless for a fabrication table top unless you are working on stainless projects and wish to minimize carbon contamination. The bolting system used to level the slats would also be another sore point for heavy work in as much as they too would eventually bend and require re-adjustment. A better plan would be to build a substantial frame from heavy channel and then bolt the slats down to it through countersunk holes drilled in them. If you really need to have a precise table top you could shim the slats against the framework and the bolts would pinch and hold the shims in place.

My favorite part of these videos is where some guy somewhere, who only does it right all the time and everytime chimes in and completely picks it apart. I was just about to pull the trigger on a $500 4x8 ( smallest my local supplier has) 3/8 plate to make a fab/welding table. This will probably be cheaper and nicer to clamp smaller pieces with out trying to drill out dozens of holes in perfect alignment! Nice job !! I’m planning the same dimensions 3x4 , would you consider adding another row of adjustment bolts midway through the plate ?
@MakingStuff

No, I've only had to adjust it two times since I built it. The only suggestion I would make is to use 1/4 inch thickness instead of 3/16 like I did.

Wow thanks, exactly what I was looking for! How important is that adjustability of the flatness you think? It could also be twisted in the diagonal.

It's not .003 flat like a strong hand, but for the type stuff I like to build it is plenty flat.

Well I just want to start learning to weld, just wondering if I should build this as my first welding table. The adjustability might be overkill or it might be very useful to adjust any mistakes I make away.

What was going on with that TIG welding? Popping and sparking and ANY residue means contamination, typically from insufficient shielding gas. Stainless and mild TIG requires 100% Argon for proper purge
