Nakamoto Forestry North America demonstrates making yakisugi "shou sugi ban" using the traditional Japanese "Flue Method", which has been used for centuries to quickly and efficiently heat-treat sugi wood planks. While other DIY methods use torches or weed burners to burn the wood, this is the best technique to produce the highest quality finish for exterior siding. This charred exterior further protects the cladding from fire, weather, and pests.
Wood used: Japanese Cypress (Cryptomeria japanica) commonly referred to in Japanese as "Sugi" (yaki=charred, sugi=cypress)

Exactly! That folks is the right way to do it. Wood is now preserved! The DIY torch method does not yield the same results. Japanese are masters with wood and thanks for doing this demonstration of the tradition of Yakisugi-ita. In about 150 years it will start to look authentic Kyoto style!

Tie wire is kind of wasteful in Japan they just use a small length of chain with a spring on it and a hook at the end, they reuse it over and over and over and over again.
@Defender_Tom
@Defender_Tom 8 месяцев назад
They also use metal wire and sometimes rope. Not everyone in Japan doesn’t it the exact same way. Some parts of Japan don’t even recognize this process at all…

I don't pretend that my propaney torchi Sugi is the same as this. But it seems to add to the longevity of some raised garden beds that I've made. I just call it "charring the wood". Is that OK? Done to increase wood lifespan instead of chemicals, metal, plastic lining.

This is a fast and effective method ! However , for small fence jobs using red cedar where both side need char'd, I want to render the grain of the harder grain char'd, leaving the soft part not as char'd, so, when I use the graphic colored oil stain, it leaves a beautiful "leopard" affect. But , good for you guys , for what you are doing, is fast and definitely will preserve the outside

Interesting "old school" craftsmanship on display. I wonder if there might be an innovative way to get similar results with less carbon footprint during the manufacture of these materials? You have any thoughts? Again...appreciate craftsmanship and NOT throwing stones.

It's not specifically done for the aesthetic, more as a preservation and treatment. But if you do it properly, it can last hundreds of years. Look at some pictures of old wooden houses in places like Kyoto. The wood is still pretty much black and those places are generally over a hundred years old.

@NakamotoForestryNorthAmerica
@NakamotoForestryNorthAmerica 2 месяца назад
There are ways to burn both sides of the boards, but in the flue method we show here and if you plan on trying this yourself, it is best to burn the face of the board. You can tell which side of the board is the face by looking at the growth rings visible in the end grain. If the rings are arching upwards, the side on top is the face

Awesome video! Would you use any type of oil after the burning?
@NakamotoForestryNorthAmerica
@NakamotoForestryNorthAmerica 2 года назад
You absolutely can. We like tung oil and other traditional types. You can also leave it unoiled and let it do its thing!
@amiller8822
@amiller8822 Год назад
What is the advantage to oil? Does it help preserve the color longer too, or just help with protecting it in other ways? And, I know that some examples I’ve seen out there, including your site, it’ll be done like the pika pika method, where more of the soot is scrubbed off, leaving more of the wood showing through, and then there’s a stain added to it, to make it some particular shade. So I wonder, if that is done - then when you’re wood starts fading in the sun, etc., is the difference or change less obvious, in what it looked like before vs. what it looks like down the road, as the fading happens? And if you were to do that same thing, to add a stain to some wood that you didn’t brush as much soot off of, would that help it to maintain some kind of darker coloration even after the sun fades away the soot and such? And if you could do that, would it still be as fire and bug resistant &c., as otherwise? And you could just put a coating of oil over the coating of stain afterwards? Thank you!
