Today was the day that I decided to challenge myself and create a piece of furniture that YOU GUYS have sent to my DM's over and over! This project was definitely a challenge however it turned out amazing and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Let me know if you would like to see more in depth tutorials like this one!
••• I do also want to mention that the total cost of this project was approximately $290. This does sound high, however when you compare it to other pieces at the same size, it's truly a fraction of the cost! ***

I’m obsessed with rattan everything at the moment so love this diy. I kind of think not being able to remove the glass is a blessing in disguise, it’s an added layer of protection for the things inside so they won’t get as dusty.
@nicanonymus2491
@nicanonymus2491 4 года назад
Right? I would leave the glass in on purpose because I hate when everything gets dusty. This way you can even vacuum the rattan with the nozzlebrush because its sturdy.

Only problem I see is if you live in a high humidity area. Even with the air conditioning on my closets get musty inside if I don't leave the doors slightly open. The cane in furniture was meant to allow air flow so the contents inside don't get mildewed or musty before air conditioning was invented. Obviously where Drew lives this is not a problem and has the advantages you mentioned of keeping things dust free. I'm going to try this DIY but for my situation I need the air flow of the cane. So glad Drew did this DIY.

One thought: if you want to use a wider mesh cane, you could use brush-on glass frosting or frosted film or Contact paper. It would knock the shine right down. I agree with the commenter who said having the glass in place will help help keep the inside of the cabinet and it’s contents from getting dusty.

Hey dude, i really like your vids. Love your up-cycle projects! Safety-wise...I would really love to see you using gloves and a mask when dealing with epoxy. You use it often and it worries me every time. In the woodworking trade we have a principle that goes like this: "if you there is a substance that have the same properties then a known toxic one, use the lesser toxic substance." this goes for toxicity for humans, animals and nature in general. Always choose the lesser toxic one. (In Denmark, woodworkers and not allowed to use epoxy unless they have completed a safety course in how to handle it) Epoxy is great for a lot of things and when it's hardened, it's stable and wont de-gas. There's many kinds of epoxy, but common among them is during the application of it, it releases fumes that are known to contain carcinogens and contact with your skin can lead to rashes and allergies towards any product containing Isocyanates (the active substance in epoxy and MANY other things). Also if you heat it up again, it will release these fumes. So say fx. cutting it with a power saw, drill or the like, fumes release again. Also the fine dust when sanding is bad. When in our private homes we don't deal to often with these toxins, but I often see DIY'ers use the stuff a lot because it's strong and convenient, but you are running a risk. Please please Please, wear a gloves and a mask when dealing with it. Keep up the content and stay safe my guy :D

In that case the shelf doesn't fit hangers, but tension rods can actually break apart cheap furniture due to the pressure it puts on them. Thank you so much for this video! I'm a first time home buyer, there are so many fees to pay for and that means I cannot have a big budget for furniture, at least for now. I also can't go all out buying those crazy big heavy machines just because I wanted to tweak the look of cheap furniture. Every time I see Ikea hack videos I get all excited, and then I see all the saws and tools I'm like what the hell!

Yes please.... btw I’ve been using only gorilla glue sticks since you (I think) mentioned it on a previous video... it works sooooo much better than other glue sticks.

Awesome, awesome, awesome !!!!!! I always wanted one of those but like you said, they can get very pricey...but now I can make one myself and get the look AND stay in my budget!!!!! Also, I think getting the bookshelf in that natural wood finish was actually perfect and probably better than the beige one!! Oh and btw, I hadn’t watched any videos in a while but I definitely missed watching yours!!! Always cool, fun, well made, with tons of beautiful DIYs!!! Oh and you always crack me up at some point in every video!!! I love your personality !!! Ok I’m gonna stop now but great job!!! Lol!!

This looks amazing. I appreciate the in-depth vloggy style tutorial, and now I'm eyeing my glass front TV console ... it might need a cane makeover.

This is so well done. You have a great eye and mad skills that can't be taught, (I sound old, yup, I am), and yes, you should definitely do more of these. Curious if you attended design school?

I like the in depth DIY. Sometimes you guys are so good at this, that it feels like I’m watching a magic trick! This is all new to me, so the more information, processes & techniques that you share, the more I learn. It’s challenging for me to imagine the creative possibilities. It’s even more challenging to actually bring the design to fruition. The devil is in the details & it’s hard sometimes to explain the steps that are seemingly natural. I thank you for the break down, it’s helpful, IMO. The great thing is that people can fast forward to skip ahead if the pace is too slow. However, as a beginner learns, the smaller steps are like the thread that strings the project together. It’s my yellow brick road 🤓

The thing I love about this is that you can have it over the glass like you did, or under the glass to give it another look. Love it!

I love the simplicity of the handles. They allow the cane to be the star. I'm so glad he left the handles.

I love this type of video where’s it’s kinda half DIY and half blog! Super helpful to see your entire journey from brainstorming, to getting your supplies, making decision based on availability of supplies at local stores, to the construction of your project. I hope you continue to make videos like this 💓💓💓

It's weird how almost everyone in my country(India) is throwing out cane furniture because it's "old" and "ancient" and it's trending in other places lol XD

Love how you not only incorporate your DIY designs but also your fashion style, which looked cute by the way, especially the t-shirt as I am pirate cra-zee. A Twofer for the price of Onefer for sure 🤣. Great job. I love furniture hacks or any kind so more would be great. Thank you.

I love this. Like seriously. I have open bookshelves in my bedroom and it gets soooo dusty so I decided to get something with doors. I was watching DIY with KB and she showed a picture of this project (I’ve been following you for a while so I’m not it sure how I missed this video) and I fell in love. You’re a genius, I’m so doing this. Thank you for all that you share with us. 💛

Ok you won me over! I subscribed. The only video I saw was of you removing renter's stick-on wallpaper, countertop paper, repainting... and I said "breathe" because I never heard anyone speak 1,000 words in 2 seconds 😊 So this vid came on my feed. And. The. Incredible. Idea. You. Came. Up. With. For. This. Project! In fact, it was best to keep the glass and put the cane over it. Adding the trim was the icing. Super great job. I may do this, adding several on one side of our walk-in closet.

@SandraWarmbreath
@SandraWarmbreath 2 года назад
He was alone so he wouldn't have needed Covid mask in any case ( if his roommate was filming that's OK as they are a household anyway)! He needs a mask to protect from outgassing fumes during gluing & painting, sanding etc., otherwise he's going to mess up his lungs for the future or even risk cancer.

I really learned a lot from your video while looking to source some cane here in Australia. I am redoing my brand new kitchen french farmhouse sideboard and plan to do the front, side panel plus the 3 draws with cane/ rattan or wicker. Keep doing creative things that make you feel good. I was wondering if I was a bit mad to be stripping down a new product, but now I see it is the inner artist in we creatives.
