Me and my step brother bought some mint snuff on a holiday in Knaresborough, it'll have been 1990/91ish as I wasn't smoking at that point, think I started in '92 when my mate 'smuggled' some Dudacus back from Spain. God awful stuff in a little blue tin. Did nothing for me other than make me sneeze and have brown snot for days. Like you, I've no idea why we even bought snuff or tried it. Never tried it again that's for sure.
