The LD Systems Maui 44 G2 ….These bad boys are awesome! As always great video Brian! I appreciate you. The flagship of the MAUI series, MAUI 44G2 boasts an enormous 1500 watts of total output power (RMS). As well as a frequency response of 37Hz to 20kHz, and a sound pressure level (SPL) of 132 dB (peak). This new system from LD systems are the best, Column arrays on the market, even up against EKX System. I just purchased the Maui 44 G2 system approximately one month ago from Ben Stowe and I have to tell you that is my go to system now. I recently did a school dance with over 300 students in the gymnasium and that thing really impressed me as well as the students!
Db's dont tell the whole story either. SPL is typically measured one meter from the speaker, but that doesn't tell you how well the sound fills the room. What matters is the acoustic impedance - how efficiently the speaker cones are coupled to the total mass of air in the room. The problem with thin column speakers is no matter how much power they put out, their tiny cones only come in contact with a small slice of air, which is rapidly dissipated as it spreads out in a large room. Such high-impedance sources will always be at a disadvantage in large venues, compared to hefty cabinets with wide speaker cones.
Great video and I absolutely agree. Headroom and efficiency are important and watts definitely don't mean so much at all. I have a system that's fully horn loaded for tops and subs and they're incredibly efficient. I've done multiple outdoor events in rural areas where the police were called. The subs were powered with only 600 watts per side, tops even less, and I had tons of headroom. It's insane to see and hear. The problem is the boxes are large and tricky to EQ. So, I currently run a single QSC KS118 (soon to add another) and two QSC K10.2's. It's very modular, redundant, and not *that* much bigger than the large column arrays. I'm willing to deal with the size and weight knowing that one rig can handle whatever I'll be throwing at it. I'm still most comfortable with 18's to handle the deepest lows cleanly and with headroom. The majority of my gigs they can roll right it.
Could I use one of my QSC 152 speakers as a monitor speaker under my table pointed upward at a angle, to add more sound and bass for larger venues. I love my Evolve 50s, the look of white is beatiful, but they die off farther out. What is beautiful, on this set up.
Too me and I haven’t been a dj that long but have been doing working parties for 20 years you can always turn it down but it’s hard to make it louder then it can go. So I say loudest system you can take too a given gig.
3db is not that much louder. Most people can hear the increase but it will not sound really loud. To get people's attention and have them say that it is louder you need to go 6db louder. In test most people felt like the sound got twice as loud with a 6db increase. My point is that if you want a noticeable louder system got +6db louder. So the Evolve is rated at 127db. So to really go appreciably louder aim for 133db. Now in reality the 127db will never be reached. At that point the speaker is ready to blow and is distorted. The Evolve in reality can only expected to hit -6db below that. So we are really talking about 121db max. Still that is a concert level. These line array type speakers are not designed to be in your face louder. Their design advantage is for a wide spread sound, left and right in the room. Also they should throw to the back of the room better especially during vocals and speeches. We want all of that for our weddings. For our school dances we want in your face loud .... also big bass ...
the reason to not set up BOTH the Evolve and the other system in the same stage area is because sometimes competing sound waves cancel each other out, right? What if the Evolve system was set up 50 feet away from the other system on the same end of the gym?
You could do that for rear fill if you want. You'll have to deal with 50 feet worth of delay, which I believe the Evolve 50 has as an adjustable setting for. For sure the Evolve 30M has it because I've used them like that. You measure from front of house to the rear fill speaker, set the delay to that distance, and no echo effect
If i ever saw a DJ use Evolve 50’s at a school dance I’d laugh they do not have the bottom end to carry a gym or cafeteria for that matter nor the wattage. At least an 18’ or two 15 subs for a small dance EV 50 is not gonna cut it esp the echo and feedback you’d get bouncing off the walls.
It’s more about experience with your equipment. Knowing set up through trial and error . (I have learned so much that way) How various systems work in various size venues with various amounts of adults Or kids. In my experience..Teens want a loud club atmosphere but k-6 graders might not be as picky. I don’t know all my systems DB but I know what works at a certain size venue for a given amount of people. Absolutely the truth. 10 years ago I bought speakers that had lights built in (any speaker w built in lights is garbage) rated 2,000 watts. Probably maxed out @ 89db or less
db is about how loud, but the watts help it stay louder further away. If you have a big crowd, you have to push through the bodies so everyone can here it. The smaller evolve speakers are very clear and are loud at a short distance. If you need a school gym to be filled you need power.
You are part right, but forget about watts. It still does not matter in regards to loudness. More watts on your powered speakers, or a spec of max handling = 1.21 gigawats, or any other watt spec you think is important isn't in regards to loudness
Why cant djs spread there speakers?? Are they 2 cheap to buy long xlr cables? I wouldnt even try a school disco unless I spread those column arrays at least 10m apart and even then so it would be scraping by with your balls hanging out! There not good for all gigs, and they dont spread sound as good as everyone thinks.

There are ways to eliminate echo in a gym. A lot of that goes away after you fill the room with kids. If you still have issues & have the ability to tilt your speakers down a few degrees, that usually solves the problem
Did you have a fallout with RCF? Because their Art Series 3 has 800w, the 7 series has 1400w and the 9 series has 2100w amps. I'm pretty sure a 100 or 200w amp won't achieve any of their SPL db max's in those boxes that they claim or wish to claim.
@@djphillmp i think they are a little like 50% the claimed peak power as most are. I have a winky dink JBL IRX 108 BT that they claim has 1300w peak and 124 max SPL which is most likely bullsh*t, but i honestly think the amps are about 600W because its pretty annoyingly loud when cranked up
No fall out with RCF. Again, Watts, max watts, max handling in watts, or any other way you want to read a spec about watts that are, true, misleading, or not true at all, ether way have ZERO relevance as to how loud anything is. That's like saying a car that uses more MPG is faster than a car that uses less MPG. A 78 Thunderbird uses more gas than a 2016 Porsche 911, therefor the Thunderbird is faster? No, it does not work that way. The Porsche is faster, even though it uses less MPG, because it's more efficient. It's the same thing with speakers.
True, an old 302 T Bird is a inefficient vehicle because of many reasons---over-weight, smog devices, mechanical fuel pump, carburetor, horrible 140HP rated to haul around that heavy carcass. It will see the rear plates of that Porsche in no time. However you are wrong about the watts. In car terms, if you can have a 750HP NASCAR it will mostly likely use only 300HP to cruise to victory but may peak up repeatedly to 600HP when passing, the same as a powered speaker when it gets cranked or at a higher db. To get to that higher db it needs more watts like the NASCAR's motor when it needs to pass other cars. Today's top selling powered speakers are efficient (not like a 70's car) Therefore you will enjoy efficient drivers and high power when you need it. And if you want more watts, why not its not going to hurt or blow up the drivers. Its true that the made in China junk speakers advertise 1,000 watt or more stickers on them, but they are not true at all. False advertising. Anyone who knows anything about electronics should stay away from knockoffs However JBL, EV, Peavey and other brands also nudge the truth though not as blatant as the Chinese no names. In closing a 100 watt RMS, 200W peak speaker no doubt can produce 122 max SPL db but will not successfully do it again and again during a gig. It will end up failing or clipping like a boombox from the 1980's. Going back to the NASCAR, a 300HP car from the 1960's may be able to pass a few cars during the first few laps but will not be able to keep it up during the whole race and the engine will probably blow up from mechanical failure. So therefore watts are not that important all the time, but important when you need it. Sort of like going to Vegas with $500 spending money than arriving with $150 bucks.
Slightly inaccurate info about “watts.” While an amplifier can certainly list power draw from the wall in watts, it is not relevant to the power it provides to the speaker. It is only relevant in relation to its efficiency in turning current from the wall into current to the speaker. Example, I have a high end vintage amplifier that clearly says 250watts near the power plug. However, the spec sheet says it will deliver a minimum of 45 watts per channel, both channels driven in to 8ohms. It is very inefficient compared to today’s class d amps found in most powered speakers. So, a unit can draw power listed in watts and also deliver a different number for power listed in watts. Today, most current draw from the power plug is listed in amps. Now take an EKX 12P. Specs are not as clearly written, but there are some clues. It is “rated” at 1500 watts max. It draws 1.8amps at 1/8 power. We will figure 120 volts as the power source since these numbers are from a U.S.A. Spec sheet. So, 1.8 amps is equal to 218 watts at 1/8 power (1.8amps x120volts = 216watts). 216watts x 8 = 1728 watts from the wall at full power (not 1500.) 1500 is the number they are telling us max goes to the drivers. It is a class d amp, which are very efficient and can get up to 90% efficient or more. Just doing the math 1728 x 90%= 1555, almost exactly what EV states as the max output to the speaker. The real answer for how loud a speaker can get involves 2 bits of info. The real rated power output to the speaker along with the drivers’ efficiencies in the cabinet. Driver efficiency is a whole other conversation.
You can use Evolve 50s for a 400 guest school dance, you just need more of them, I would use 6 around the room. However a point source speaker has advantages as you can adjust the height and direction of the sound as well as use 18 inch subs for ultimate bass. Personally I would stick to a stock of Evolve 50s as they are verastile enough to use at so many types of event and less hassle. I would get a line array stack if I progressed to a recording artist.
That would be complicated for several reasons. One is that you need to increase the number of speakers exponentially to realize a louder system, starting with one speaker. To be louder that one, you need another identical speaker, for a total of two. To be louder than two, you'd need two more identical speakers, which would be a total of four. To be louder than four, you'd need four more, for a total of eight. Six won't be louder than four. You COULD do, say four front-of-house & two rear fill somewhere in the middle or towards the back. You'd have to set the delay properly on the rear fill speakers so it wasn't a reverb train wreck in the back of the room. Even with that, your hot spot WAY up front of house would be a relatively short throw (compared to horn loaded tops) 127 db +3db for a total of 130 db. I believe the space between the front of house hot spot & rear fill would be lacking with mids & highs, not to mention 130 db total does not seem like enough to fill a space with 400 kids. In regards to your sub theory, yes, you'd have more bass, but you never addressed the lacking highs & mids, so the system still isn't working as well as a more affordable & practical horn loaded top cabs X2 @132db + a sub or two.
Evolve 50s trick you into thinking they sound good by accentuating highs (by nature of their small tweeters) and lows (pretty good sounding sub). They shouldn’t be used for anything other than singer songwriters, where they shine. For recorded music it sounds just like you’d think…a 120 degree dispersion mess and creating tinnitus in your ears.
Yes, The DJ will get blasted in the head IF you neglect to tow out your speakers roughly 15 degrees on each side. Solves that issue & creates a more classic 90 degree config directly in front of the DJ :)
A lot of people suggest that. The reason this won't work is because all you do is make more bass. This does nothing at all for highs & mids. Sure, you'll hear BOOM loud & clear, but nothing else, like mids & highs. The addition of a sub would not enhance mids & highs, which is the main issue in the first place.
i have an idea hope it can help. since you have evolve 50's and 30's why not combine (surround em dance floor) them when you have large gigs instead of bringing the big guns that puts a lot of strain to your body when setting up? i have Behringer eps500mp3 which is very light and easy to setup but is paired with a large earthquake type (similar to je36) subwoofer when needed for the occasion (requires 2 people to carry). i would gladly trade for lighter/smaller subwoofers when i can afford those. i wanna live similarly to yours someday ^_^
