I'm sharing my FIRST-TIME experience with you using my new EVOLVE 50M portable column PA system by Electro-Voice.
Let me start by saying this has changed everything and has made my solo gigging life so much easier.
I'd like to thank the folks at Electro-Voice for sponsoring this video. You can learn more about the Evolve 50M and get the specs here on their website: bit.ly/3KZ21Jc
***Where I love the Evolve 50M, you may find that the 30M is perfect if you play mostly small to mid-size venues for solo shows. Here are my Sweetwater links to both:
➡️ Evolve 30M: sweetwater.sjv.io/anoNmQ
➡️ Evolve 50M: sweetwater.sjv.io/75aGzA
In the video, I show you exactly how I use the Evolve 50M for my live solo gigs. These gigs are mainly acoustic but I also play some electric leads as well as acoustic instrumentals between singing songs.
I show you all of the connections and how to place portable column PA systems on the stage, in general.
This is all being demonstrated at my largest venue, Keel and Curley Winery in Plant City, FL. And I really appreciate the opportunity to play there (also thanks to Todd and Kuhl One Management for getting me this gig).
This is a larger stage than most venues and is set up for a full band. This place also gets packed, especially on weekends, which I was playing on a Friday while filming this video.
You'll also hear some of my live performances using the Electro-Voice Evolve 50M and for several instances that include: playing and singing, talking, acoustic instrumental, duo (my wife sings with me some), and acoustic instrumental with electric guitar solos.
This gives you a wide range of how you can use the Evolve 50M for live solo gigs adding other elements.
Of course, as you would expect from me, I share several live performance tips with you (be sure to hang around for the end where I share more context behind working with Electro-Voice for this).
I hope you enjoy the video and find it helpful. Be sure to leave any questions and your experience as a live music performer in the comments.
Keep Playing Music,
Jason

Thank you Jason. Great video, and wisdom of giving. I have a pair of EV Evolve 50's. Every week for the last 4 years I have put these speakers throught their paces, and they have always provided a crisp and punchy sound. Ive used them with a 5 piece RnB band, 7 piece Afrobeat band, Acoustic solo gigs, acoustic duo for weddings (which I only use one speaker for), and for DJ's. The ease of setup and packdown alone has saved me sooooo much time that it is an incredible system for hard working musicians. I think its time to upgrade to the 50M!

Sounds really good. In my duo we use an array system but it’s a cheap no name brand. I don’t think it sounds really good. However the higher quality EV and Bose arrays sound great. I def want to get one one day. As of now I have a Fishman Loudbox Performer for when I start solo gigging (hopefully soon). It handles just my vocals and acoustic. But one day I’d love to get a nice line array system. I just want to thank you Jason. Your channel has really inspired me to get out on my own and do solo gigs. I’m picking a niche genre like you too (80s with a side of 70s). Mine is 90s Rock, Grunge & More. I’ve taken a lot of your tips for my duo and definitely applying them to my future solo gigs too. Hey Jason, that was an amazing vid about your gig setup. Loved your laid back speech approach, absolutely friendly. Overall just a warm friendly talk. Here’s a comment that will surprise you a bit; I’m in pharmaceutical sales, prescription drugs… your last few minutes in the vid, you made a very unexpected and outstanding last piece of advice on what we call in sales « the added value ». You absolutely nailed it on the head. I loved it because it came from someone from outside Sales per se. Of course you have to sell yourself like we all do but you coined it so very nicely. Good job my friend. I’ve saved your vid to listen to that part again. Like i said, I’m in sales and I’m far from believing that most of my colleagues understands the concept of added value as you have said brilliantly said. ✌🏼By the way, i watched your vid because i have an interest in getting PA Sys gear for my acoustic guitar. Nice playing by the way.

I did not know that they had added channels and connectivity to Evolve 50. Very useful! I used one Evo 50 to do a benefit with a friend of mine for an 80 year-something drummer that wanted to play one last gig. The casinos used to send limos for this guy to sit in with their headliners back in the day. We were on a very busy intersection in Boulder, NV. I played a Taylor 614-CE, my friend played a bass and our buddy played a cocktail set. We had only planned to play an hour, but played 4! I used a Profx12v3 into the EV for my front end. The audience loved the sound and the business wanted to have us back every weekend. Not possible with one coming from LA and me coming from Laughlin, NV area. The drummer has passed on now. So happy to give him fresh memories and live audience appreciation! BTW, my wife is from Mindanao, and after hearing her karaoke I would never let her near a PA system! Thanks for the video!

Great video and great talk at the end about what you can give and not get. Our last gig was a little too big and I was afraid our evolve 30m would not handle it all so I went back to two speakers on sticks. I once again realized how I have came to hate speaker stands and all the additional cabling for the most part! I ordered and just got in a second 30M. In hindsight a single 30m would have handled it. The second one would have been good insurance. We still do some street fair and concert in the park type events and I'm still uncertain if two 50Ms would handle them. Going to keep our Yamaha DXR12mkiis for those large outdoor shows where we're expected to cover a lot of ground but who knows next year we may get one or two of the 50Ms as well.

But I plan on just running the microphones straight into my Evolve 30M this weekend. I think the TC stomp boxes are redundant with the Evolves because the evolve already gives you EQ, compression, and reverb. I find the TC’s doubling effect a little disorienting to hear while I’m trying to perform. And I’m on the fence with the pitch correction. Sometimes I think it gives a nice studio polish. And other times I think I sound better without it. I will say if you want to experiment with the TC pitch corrector, do not set it at the recommended 50% detent. That’s way too much and sounds wonky. Back it down to about 9-10 o’clock.

I've been using the 50M for a little over a year. Generally for fiddle, guitar, and a square dance caller, sometimes with an added banjo. It has been great, very easy setup and takedown. I used it in a gym that was actually 4 gyms with movable walls but they had completely open... I brought extra passive speakers, poles, and small powered mixer: ran the fiddle/guitar through the subwoofer & array with the calls mainly through the AUX to the secondary system. Everyone was expecting a muddy sound but to their surprise, it was clear as a bell. I plan on using a similar setup for problem rooms because I'm there to do a job, which is to make it memorable for the fun everyone had, not the troublesome sound system. Very happy with this system - i recommend a cover on wheels for the subwoofer. Other than that, I agree 100% with everything you said.

Excellent! Sounds great, and you don’t have to worry about the comb filter effect of two stand speakers cancelling out frequencies further down the hall! In both the electric over looped acoustic and the final acoustic over looped acoustic, it sounded like the loops were louder than the original guitar signal, at least a little. I don’t know if you can nudge down the loop output on the Ditto X4. I think running both guitars through the Pod Go sounds like a great idea. Would you put one guitar on each side of the stereo inputs? And would you put the looper before the acoustic input on the PodGo or would you put it after the acoustic output and run it to the Evolve from there? I assume after, so you can have one patch for the loop sound, and then switch to a different patch to feed the acoustic solo on top. I’ll have to find out what the Evolve foot switch does … whether you can set it to mute all channels except one vocal Mike without effects for announcements and then bring everything back with vocal reverb etc.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth Год назад
That's a great point about the cancelling of frequencies Yes, I need to work with the loop levels. I normally use my POD Go for acoustic and I have another setting for lead acoustic that I switch to after I loop. I'll more than likely continue using that for guitar but the system acoustic setting does sound solid. I still need to test the footswitch.

Hi Jason. Thanks for the video. You play the 80's. I am older than you and I play 'That 70s Show' lol. You have a great baritone speaking voice and then have to go to your falsetto head voice for lyrics, just as I used to do. I found it weakened my vocals and strained my voice a bit, so I bought a baritone acoustic guitar tuned a perfect 4rth down from B to B. I now play my same songs with the same chord shapes and use my natural chest voice instead of trying to sing like a girl. (Think Eagles) You should try it. I bet you would sound great. Also, you could buy a digitech drop pedal for your electric to "capo" down to B for your electric leads. Thanks again.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 9 месяцев назад
Thank you. I’ve never used a capo for some reason. Instead, I transpose songs to fit my range, which I do a lot in C sharp minor and F sharp minor, and those keys also allow more open strings. That’s kind of created my sound for these shows. I’m not sure where you heard me go falsetto but that’s not something I do at these gigs. Over the recent years (especially this year), I’ve learned to compress my voice so that I don’t strain. And it’s worked wonders as I never have a sore or hoarse voice after shows. Got a lot of that from Ken Tamplin’s warm up videos on RU-vid

If you were a solo artist, I think this is absolutely incredible. If you’re a band it’s not going to work because you’re not gonna be able to have enough input and I’ve noticed the product company are trying to push that you can buy two of these and you’ll get eight channels, but that’s still not gonna be enough if you need to make up your drums so anyone in a band stay away from it. You mentioned placing the Evolve in front of you to avoid feedback. Have you had feedback issues placing it behind you? I’m asking because I place my Harbinger line array behind me and rarely have feedback issues. Eliminates the need for a monitor. When I play with my band, we use the line arrays behind us and use as monitors. Wasn’t sure if the Evolve would function similarly.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth Год назад
I should have expanded on that. The Evolve 50M does eliminate feedback so you could technically have it behind you. I would just rather not take the chance, and I've talked to others playing through similar systems that always place it out in front.
@cpfwriter
@cpfwriter Год назад
This varies depending on venue, overal noise level, your own volume level and instruments, and experience with mic placement. It's also sorta conventional wisdom, and I agree with it, that on average the Bose sticks with their 180-deg. dispersion are the least feedback-prone because at any given volume it's throwing the sound over that wide spread instead of more of it straight into the mics and all that. That being said whatever you're doing with your Harbingers can almost certainly be done with the Evolves--I don't see a dispersion spec for yours but the 50/50m/30m have 120-deg dispersion which is very good. (I gig with a 30m and have gigged with a Bose L1M2, they're both great). I should add, to expand on Jason's comment, that virtually every *really* loud band I've seen with Bose sticks places them out front.

@Jason Stallworth - I have an issue with the AUX settings in the QuickSmart app: when I setup and connect, I lose the mixer interface functionality on the AUX screen. That is to say - I setup the system, plug in mics, set levels and proceed to use the app to adjust the AUX mix. I have a nice view all 8 channels and the MAIN with separate sliders for each. Now when I click on AUX in the bottom right, I get a view that only shows the AUX on the right having a slider: the other channels have names which I have assigned but nothing else. I can click on the names of individual channels and get basic eq, comp, and levels but those are applied to the MAIN mix. If I turn off the system and invoke DEMO mode, the AUX interface reappear and function as expected. What did I do wrong? How do I fix this?

I found out how to restore that menu: when in the AUX view, click on the top to adjust those levels. On that screen, the lower right has a small type link for AUX VIEW. That opens a screen for toggling the view from MAIN to AUX. Hit AUX to return to the default view.

You can adjust on the unit so you don’t necessarily need the app. And the settings keeps whatever settings you have it at so they’ll be the same when you turn it back home (I believe you can also save presets) On that note, I also sometimes use an external soundboard and run that through one 50M channel. If you plan on only using one of these then the 50M will have more headroom and a fuller sound with more low end. However to be completely honest, the 50M doesn't sound twice as good as a 30M and I compared both before opting for a pair of Evolve 30Ms. The smaller 30M is quite a bit lighter and more compact than the 50M and much cheaper! You can almost buy a pair of Evolve 30Ms for the price of a single 50M and run in stereo for a bigger sound for larger gigs. A pair of 50Ms would be great for a full band thanks to the Ethernet connection allowing a pair of 50Ms to function as a larger single PA with double the inputs being run from a single app. The smaller 30M doesn't have the Ethernet connection. IMHO if you don't plan on doing larger gigs, save your money and get the Evolve 30M. If you plan on doing larger gigs then get the bigger Evolve 50M.

And the last clip where youre playing and you can hear all the background noise (ppl talking) as loudly as the music demonstrates its not really filling the room with sound.

First of all, this video is specific to solo gigs, not full bands. If you're a rock or metal band, yes, I'd recommend using an appropriate PA. Also, I was using the EV ZLX powered 12s for about 3 years before getting the Evolve 50M (those were unsponsored). It just didn't make sense to set all of that up for a solo gig, which is why I reached out to EV to see if they'd be interested in working up a sponsorship for the Evolve.

I actually stopped using those pedals a few months ago. Latest gear: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8ljF5v5Pcp8.htmlsi=7JMzEmQck3jHM1l1
