I’ve been djing for 48yrs and my go to speakers have always been Mackie brand. I disagree with the entry level Dj’s statements I hear but other than that good video. I’m still using Thump 15A’s with no issues and they sound great. Never had any complaints from crowds (yet)
@@360Kennels Yes and keep in mind sound travels differently in open space so for the best coverage get them as high as possible on your stands. 8/9 feet is good…
@@DjSmoothNY would you suggest them also for a band concert type of speakers? the feedback feature would be perfect in order to push the mics on stage without get feedback easily but they will be enough for 300 ppl crowd in front of you?
Just FYI, Music Ducking mode actually does something different. So if you have a mic plugged into channel one and music playing in channel two if you would go to speak the music will automatically turn down when you are speaking and turn back up when you are done. So it ducks the music when you are speaking. This is a common technique in audio engineering. I'm an audio engineer for a living. We just do it by hand with a fader. Sometimes we sidechain a compressor or use automation too. There are also plugins that do it too. Anyway, just thought it was worth mentioning!
Absolutely meaningless...speakers are measured one meter on axis to the speaker and speaker grille removed ...not waved about willy nilley and shoved into the horn ,but what is surprising though was how low the readings were when you were right on top of it , so it's not going to get anywhere near 128 dB at 1 meter
@@robertgunter7230... measured at 1 m directly on axis, but with different signal input, not music, realy something artifiicial full spectral and coherent in time, maybe something like white or pink noise there are.
Yes for speaker wars!!! I'm a JBL user for now, so would love to hear difference moving up the line EON -> PRX -> SRX so on. But I realize you and others would want to go across and compare brands as well. I'm sure whatever you put together will be great. Always great content!
Can you compare JBL partybox 1000 with any of the other JBL setups you have ? Im a mobile Dj hosting small outdoor partys, and looking for a setup for 50-100 people. I use i Pioneer XDJ-XZ controller and mostly play Techno and Psy so you know it.
@@theaverageguy3884 Nice controller you have there! I do not personally have any experience with the partybox. I do believe I know someone who has one though. I started with 12" EON tops. I have now added 2 18" PRX XLF subs, 2 12" PRX tops, and 2 15" PRX subs. I may be able to compare smaller setup with one and then two 15" subs to the party box for you. I'll let you know if I get the chance. It's great having the 15" PRX subs for most events. So much easier to move around and they are plenty. I use all four subs for school dances. Still learning little tricks here and there.
I want to clarify that the music ducking is for line input #2. If you have a mic plugged into input #2 it will lower the volume of music when you are talking into the mic & will bring the volume of the music back up when you stop talking. #Squad
#Squad. Btw, I am an 'old' beginner and theses are the ones I run for my weddings. Couldn't happier with them. I will say to anyone, an equalizer will bring them to life.
“We don’t want to break anyone’s ear drums on the dance floor”, says the guy who entertained EVERYONE in the city when he first got his JBL SRX speakers years ago. Keep on rocking Rick!
Hey whats up rick!! Have you heard any of the drm line and if you have how does it compare to this speaker. I love your channel and im a 13 year old looking to start getting into DJing. I watch your channel and it makes me very happy to beggin in DJing.
Great stuff rick and Interesting to hear these as your Mic does a great job, although I don't use Active speakers, I'm old school using Passive with the use of a full spectrum graphic equaliser that also makes my 4 x 15 subs Sing....
Hello DJ Rick! I am a newbee DJ, just starting to assemble my equipment. After thorough research and constant browsing of your channel I decided to buy this mackie thump 215 XT. You have helped me a lot in deciding which hardware I will be needing for my set up. My question is, does this Mackie 215 xt needs a subwoofer? I don't have a budget for that anymore...does these speakers suffices my gigs that will be just medium size house parties and backyard occasions?
Yea that’s what I’m interested in.. I already have the Thump 215xt. Was wanting to get the ICOA 15 but after reading the specs I might just get a second pair of the Thumps at a lower price & Weight!!!
I direct children's musicals. I currently use an older set of Thump 15" speakers but need to buy new ones. I'm looking at the 212XT and the 215XT for our performances in the school gym/multi-purpose room. Our audiences are usually about 150 parents. Over the years, I've noticed that I need to bump the highs in particular to hear children speaking their lines. I was set on the 215's, but heard on another channel that the 212 is clearer for voice. Would you recommend the Mackies for my purpose, and would the 215's be better?
Well overall the clarity of the vocals comes down to the tweeters in the mackies and they are not the highest of quality. If you spent a little more and upgraded to a higher end speaker like qsc k12 or rcf art series you would see a noticable difference in vocal clarity. But on the topic of 12 vs 15. The 12s will give better mid range response which can help with vocals but overall the tweeters are the main factor in clarity
Can we see some reviews on Cerwin Vega DJ speakers. The best sounding DJ setup i ever heard was this DJ with 2 passive subwoofers in a horn style cabinet. The bass was insane lots of output no distortion.
As usual, great video... I have and use a pair of the 215s combined with their 18s. Also, have a set of the 8" Thumps. Best sounding setup I've ever had. They are also budget friendly.
Hello Rick, I picked up two of these and noticed that the orientation of the power switch and the socket where you plug in the power cord is different on mine. Anyway, the main reason I'm reaching out is because when using my iPod Touch to Bluetooth connect to the Thump215XT, the OL or clipping light stays on way more often even though the volume on the iPod is turned all the way down. I noticed you were using a cellphone to play the music at a high volume. Did you happen to notice if the clipping light was at full brightness on your speakers during your review or do I have a setting incorrectly?
#squad. great stuff I think the "standard" for measuring db is at 1 meter, Double the power is 3 db. Due to distance square rule double the distance, half the distance. So at 1 meter you get a reading, at 2 meters, the reading will be down 3 db. At 4 meters you will be down another 3 db ( 6 db, a quarter of the power ). It takes a long way to kill the sound but it drops off quick. As for quality of sound, ( not how good the speakers are ), just making up numbers, using a 1000w system to push 105w sounds a lot better then trying to use a 100w system to get that same 105w. ( I have heard that too many times )
It's actually more like 6db per doubling of distance for a point source speaker, and 3db per doubling of distance is how a line array properly deployed will perform.
Yes, dB SPL should be measured at 1m. That's a standard in the industry and Rick should know this. He's measuring at 8 feet and then at 0 feet, in a garage..😏 Also, dry specs like Watts RMS and dB SPL still don't give a good idea about what a speaker sounds like IRL. Because speakers can have different efficiency and dB SPL can be a number that is measured with a screeming tweeter while the bass is being reduced, compressed, etc. You would have to compare speakers at their maximum volume while they're still not distorting, compressing, etc, to judge their real world soundquality.
Honestly even though the icoa sounds better the mackie is louder. The icoa pissed me off with its limiting feature that ducks the volume at high output levels
I would love to see reviews in this price range I was going to buy the ICOA 15 BUTT 58 lbs each with great reviews but they are Sold Out So I bought the 38lb zlx15bt EVs and what about the less known brands and cheaper priced in 4/2023 where are we at with this price Harbinger, Sound Town, or LD Systems ICOA. After seeing this review IDK Shold I of bought the Makie thunp 215xt Vs the Ev 15 zlxbt??? I saw this video after I bought the Ev's I and started up as a Mobile DJ coming out of retirement after over 15 years plus I was when DJ's used Cd's
#SQUAD what I would like to see is a best mid level speaker setup for DJ’s , if you haven’t already done it. I’d also be willing to go the extra mile for #SQUAD and accept any older Dj setups you aren’t putting to good use. I’m just a team player like that. Lol
My all time favorite jazz bassist uses a nice mic into a nice preamp into a Mackie powered speaker instead of a bass amp. Barely anyone else does this, so I can’t find reviews for this type of use. Any idea how the low end would hold up to a 300-500 watt bass rig? Intended for stage volume with drums, or small venue concerts. The SRM version is much too heavy to consider, btw.
Great video, thank you. I have a question, I purchased 2 of this with the tripods, but unfortunately they’re lose on tripod without the adapter, but when I used the adapter the speaker will not fit. I’m I doing something wrong or is it supposed to be lose on the tripod?
wanted that mackie thump 215 badly but came accross the yamaha DXR 212/215 MKII and wonderding if i should go for the thump of the DXR given that am looking for loud, clear and bassy speaker. to note that both have the same price tag.
#squad please compare the eV zlx 12bt I use these for pretty much all our gigs and get a comfortable 110db at 0 range on the speaker bin with volumes at 12 o clock
Good job keep the videos coming. Success will come your way and open doors of opportunity for you. Believe me Suffering from hearing loss is not pleasant. A lot of friends I know at a later age have suffered and are wearing hearing aids.
I'm looking at getting Pioneer DJ's newest speaker PIONEER DJ XPRS2, which is a 12" speaker. Along with their 15" Sub PIONEER DJ XPRS2 15 INCH REFLEX LOADED ACTIVE SUBWOOFER. ( I don't expect you to do a review of them, because they are a bit more pricey and unless Pioneer DJ sends you some, it's not likely feasable)
Thats hard to compare. Completely different speaker design. The evolve has a dedicated sub which instantly gives the speaker a full range. You need to add a sub to this top for an equal comparison
Absolutely! My team has a lot of jbl. Two of them have prx rigs (tops and bottoms) and we have a srx / vrx rig. And for our few big big events we rent all vrx cabinets
@@DJRickWeb quick story, I was at six flags amusement park in New Jersey and thru out the park music is being played while you wait to get on the rides. I was relaxing listening to the music; and I said to myself… “self” the music was sounding so good and checked the speakers 🔊 they were JBL after that I was hooked.
please help. looking for a loud, clear and bassy loudspeaker and found the mackie 215 and the macki 212 XT which have the same price. To note that am a begineer dj who plays in family parties etc, well up to 120 pax. so, which 1 to go with? the 215 seems to have more bass but is it worth sacrificing the other additional options on the 212 Xt to go for the additional bass on the 215?
Hello DJ Rick Webb Thanks for the great review. I would like to know, out of context, the comparison of the following: 1. FBT Muse 210LA FBT Mitus 218SA Processed sub woofer With 2. JBL SRX 910LA JBL 928 subs And 3. HH Electronics TNA 2051 HH Electronics 1800 SA subwoofers. Rick Webb what I need to know is how do they compare, say for example with 8 line arrays and 4 subs for each, which one would bring the best output outdoors. Thanks for helping
Depends. We keep some of the speakers and use them. Normally first I offer them up to my team. Then to the local community to purchase at a pretty huge discount compared to retail.
Oh no you right. They go fast. Next shipment should be in stock around late May. There is a shipment sent every month. Its all we can do to keep up with demand.
DRM is the top of the line Mackie. Mackie owns RCF at one point you don’t have prepared statements about the company and their history for folks to know who they are. Calling their product a beginner speaker instead of the class of speakers they have like JBL, Chevrolet etc. as a DJ with 45 years in the business I not hating but trying to give u pointers to help step up your game. Bet you don’t know the electrical formula E X I = W
Why call these speakers beginners speakers ?? These speakers can stand up next to and higher prices secondly 90% of ppl cant connect these speakers when doing tutorials when testing a powered speakers once the speaker have 2 inputs ppl need to use a Y splitter xlr cable
They are beginner though. The clarity does not stand up to speakers of higher price points. Anybody can make a loud speaker but only the higher end speakers can do clarity and acurate freq responses
@@DJRickWeb ok hear how i save some great dollars i have a mackie thump 15a i swap the speaker it came with n load a 18 sound Mb700 no ev,jbl, or Qsc can stand next to it not ever yorkville i swear .....and for my alto im about to load a more upgraded high frequenct Neo driver in it ill let u know the out come !!😂
The problem with an app to control any DJ gear is when you go somewhere that there isn't any usable internet and therefore the "cloud" wont hook up and mobile data is expensive or unavailable. ( I am in Australia, similar area to " The continuous states " of USA but politicians that only support their sponsors, that is, the rich corporations that may give them kickbacks. )
@@robertlawson1184 hey man just add some PRX818s or the new 900s and your set 12 & 18s match up quite well and man id much rather do 12s cause i am tired already from carrying 40kg(88 pounds) speakers for small gigs like man i need some 12s and some 15 inch subs and for the larger gigs ill use the 15s and 12s as monitors.
