These kind words mean so much to me. Lot's more lesson videos in the works. Digging into alternate, economy and sweep picking next...and hopefully another djent lesson soon since it seems like people are enjoying this video.
Just wanted to note that the term "djent" was coined by Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah), not Misha. He has mentioned it multiple times in interviews, however, so I can see where the confusion might come from. Nice video!
sorry to be negative man as any information is good information, but none of that is Djent. it's more like thrash or metalcore just played on an 8string.
Justin, did you watch the whole video? Maybe you could take some time to explain to me and the viewers what djent really is then. I'm all ears brother and I'm ready to learn.
1st off, just want to say that the techniques are solid and needed for anyone that wants to play metal. That being said, there were too many techniques missing. This was a good metalcore or thrash lesson but you cant just tune to F, play metallica, and call it djent. Where are all the odd time signatures, polyrhyms, contrasting rhythms, dissonant chords, and weird arpeggios? Very good tutorial for someone who is learning or wants to learn how to play old school thrash, hardcore, or metalcore though. Again, not knocking the technique or even the delivery, just sayin.
Those are some good thoughts. My goal with this video was to give some beginners some essential techniques to get them started. I think I'll cover that stuff in a future video. Either way, thanks for watching.
@@DrewCreal Stevie Ray is an overrated Hendrix clone and metal is an over saturated and watered down genre, maybe if the artists you cited stepped outside of metal then they would develop some actually interesting and creative ideas instead of regurgitating the same ones
Not only does this method and technique work well for guitar, it is also applicable to playing bass using a pick. My picking speed has increased exponentially while playing in good meter using a metronome.Another factor to consider with bass is using some forearm exercises for building stregth and endurance. GREAT VIDEO! 1
I think treating the stopping of a note or chug at a specific interval of a beat is also very important. Just as important as the timing of your pick is the timing of your mute.
Drew, kindly dont keep it too long..too much talk is offputting....and it trails off.......thnk u however for the video...can u show us how to come up with a basic meshuggah tune using half whole diminished scale in C maybe and maybe whole tone too for the chorus and bridge part
Thanks for the feedback. I believe that language is important, and being able to explain a concept in a thorough way is maybe just as important as being able to play it. At least I think that’s true if you’re making RU-vid videos. That being said, yeah, more extreme djenting is coming soon and I’ll try to keep it succinct. Remember, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to watch.
Yeah i dont like the accents too, its ruin my timing because its too loud that i cant tell if im playing with click or not also its make me hold the last beat longer to anccitipate the 1st beat of new messure and make me out of click.
I only recently picked up my first 8-string, but I've been playing on and off for years on a 6. There is a wonderful balance of humor and knowledge here that I'm really enjoying, so great job and thanks much! I've already learned a ton from just the first 20 minutes.
Thanks so much for the comment, I'm glad you found some good info here. Check out my new Djent video, I go a lot deeper with these concepts in that video in terms of technique. Thanks for being here 🤘
Been playing metal since the early 90's but the newer progressive metal kind of blows my mind. I understand the music theory behind it but the progressions and tunings are still eluding me. I can play Dream Theater type stuff but Periphery, Tesseract, Caligula's Horse and other bands seem just a little out of my grasp in regards to the technique they use.
Thanks💯🤟it really comes in handy, especially for beginner level of playing metal like me.Sich a blessing 🤟💥👌💯so subscribed.pls make more of this.especialy on how to make evey tone on my guitar to sound like 8th or 7th string guitar..
Since I was a teenager I've always used Dava Control picks. They are thin in the center, and thick at the ends. Perfect for "Pinch Harmonics", and great for strumming.
the guitar drums thing is genius! I haven't played my guitar in a while and decided to pick it back up after learning music production and man this little exercise helped me get my string skipping chops back down
Ok I'm saving this video for when I learn guitar lol. In the meantime, somebody care to chime in on something for me? The game Street Fighter 5 (SF5/SFV) has some music that has Djent elements but is also pretty melodic. I've never heard anything like it and I'm trying to find more or see if there's a subgenre out there that sounds similar. The three tracks that are main examples of what I'm referring to are "SFV Main Menu Theme", "SFV Arcade Edition Menu Theme" and "SFV Ring of Pride Alternative". Figured I'd ask here and at the very least hopefully whoever looks these up enjoys them too.
You're right, music critics didnt start calling it groove metal until later. But it's a legit term to describe what was happening in metal around that time.
There's a lot of different tunings you can use for Djent or modern progressive metal. Meshuggah famously tubes down a half step with their 8 strings, Archspire plays in this tuning EAEADGBE, and I believe Tosin and Javier from Animals as Leaders play with the drop D string relationship so their tuning would be EBEADGBE. For the music that I play, most of the time I'm in standard 8 string tuning or the Animals as Leaders tuning. The sky is the limit though, you can tune and set up the guitar however you'd like to.
Love seeing all the Meshuggah fans with their bright pink panties in a wad. “Periphery didn’t make djent” bruh who cares!? They pushing it harder than meshuggah is and they still praise meshuggah while doing it. Periphery and Misha has done so much for the djent community with online content that I don’t even think of Meshuggah. 😂
@@DrewCreal There are a lot of atmospheric elements to music made my bands who’re absolutely derivative of the ‘tones. Chino is also the only person who can ‘rap-rock’ in a way that doesn’t make me want to copulate with a full-grown male hippo in a cactus nursery.
I’ll be honest, I liked Linkin Park for about 6 months when I was in 8th grade, once I heard Dream Theater, Planet X, Meshuggah, Extol, Benea Reach, System of a Down, Korn and so many other bands I didn’t feel the need to keep spinning LP. Hey that’s just me though, jam what you love brother.
Either he call himself a bulb or we do, still misha can legitimately call himself a bulb as the named "bulb" originated from his 1st band name (project) with his friend in 2004.
