In this video I'm showing you how I discovered a work around to get the USB-C port to work with mics that connect via 3.5mm audio jack to the DJI Action 2. You will need adapters, but at least it will work.

TRRS is the secret sauce but all the extra dongles/cables drive me nuts. Definitely prefer the direct USB-C route but this is a nice fallback for non digital mics.

Agreed. I mean, I’m just lucky to have all these adapters laying around. I’m planning to make the ultimate guide for audio recording to beginner beginners. LOL!!! Also, we need to take into account that there’s no rig/cage that will let you attach a cold shoe to the Action 2. There are tripods that have have the cold shoe built into the handle, like my PGYTech MantisPod. But, that’s $150!!! I needed that MantisPod for my top shots and be portal to take to school and do top shots for my students when I demo. That’s the reason I was willing to spend the $150. :)

I've tested the Audio Technica ATR2x-USB adapter (which should be readily available in most countries) with a TRS lav mic and it's fine (it only works with mono mics). That adapter also has stereo headphone output and it works during playback, which is handy. For stereo audio input I have tested the Zoom H1N and the Zoom F1 audio recorders (connected USB > USB). The H1N's own mics supply the stereo signal or you could plug an external stereo mic into the H1N and that would get routed to the Action 2. The F1 doesn't have mics so you'd need to connect your own, stereo or mono. TRRS connectors are usually used with headsets, which have a mono mic and a stereo headphone. I think that any adapter intended for use with those will not expect a stereo mic to be connected. So, is there an adapter out there which accepts a stereo mic input? Probably only something which would describe itself as a 'USB soundcard' and would be not cheap and a bit big to use in this context. Note that in Pro mode on the Action 2, tap the icon in the centre of the left side of the screen, then tap the rightmost tab from the resulting display. That's where the Action 2 audio settings can be found. Once an external mic is connected, you can use that menu to set the gain. Once you have tapped the gain button, an invisible slider will appear close to the bottom of the screen, for adjusting gain. Well, as it's invisible you won't see it, but with a bit of swiping around, you will get to know where it is hiding...

Yes, you are correct. I just tried using a Rode TRS to TRRS adapter and splitter to Rode Micro right channel and Deity D4 Mini left channel. Both mics worked fine, but no stereo audio. Just dual mono. I also went ahead and tried the iPad Pro adapter to the Rode VideoMic NTG. I tried to record with a safety track, but still got only dual mono. I'll keep trying. :)

Have either of you tried the gopro mic adapter to see if it works as a stereo input? Did I ask that on the last video? I think @MrHeng562 must have tried it already.

@@GIZZMOTORSPORTS Anything that is sold as specific to a device will not work. Only Android-specific devices will work (or, it seems, Windows).

@@Ozpeter @MrHeng562 what DJI needs to do is make another smaller battery. Maybe 1/4 -1/3 the size without a screen but with a proper stereo 3.5mm connection, card slot and usb c plug. Maybe somebody will make one in the aftermarket...

I tried to do pass through power with the GoPro audio adapter, Cynova adatper, the bulky iPad Pro adapter, and another even bulkier USB-C adapter. But, they all failed to do pass through power to charge the Action 2. I'm a bit surprised, but I think it's because they don't want the camera to overheat. For example, I already overheated the camera yesterday just doing 4K hyperlapse of a drive a did from Long Beach to Irvine. In 18-ish minutes, the camera overheated because it was in direct sun and doing a 4K hyperlapse. I'm making that video later. Please wait for that. Anyhow, imagine recording 4K 30fps while charge the camera for long duration while hiking and what not. It'll definitely burn up. So, this camera isn't meant for long duration recording. Gotta do casual recording.

@@mrheng562 I used mine outside with a USB power bank and recorded for 4 hours continuously at 1080p. (wind noise is super loud without a deadcat :-( ) I don't need 4k all the time for my Kayak fishing videos as I leave it record all the time so I don't miss any action so the ability to pass through power is critical.

@@BassManStrikes , I totally “hear” you on that wind noise and I too need that pass through power for long days of vlogging. Too bad we’re not given that ability to do both at the same time. Also, I’ve lived streamed in 1080p for nearly two hours without a hitch. 1080p is still a solid resolution for most people because phone is where the most of the content is being consumed. I appreciate your input about the plug in power charging and overheating. 🙏🙏🙏

thanks Mr Heng. That rode mic is mono, do you have a stereo to dual mono splitter? I'm wondering if you can split the input and record 2 different audio channels. I have trs to dual mono, would you need a trrs to dual mono? or a trrs to trs then a trs to dual mono? Too many questions.

It sounds good. But dang, wondering if the cam is supposed to be a digital mic input I look to google. Google says the apple usb-c to 3.5 trrs adapter is a mono audio input?? What if you plug your big dollar Rode stereo mic into that apple adapter, will it show 2 distinct audio channels in editing?

I now have a Rode AI-Micro interface on order - it may arrive tomorrow - this has two mic inputs for stereo, or it can handle a one-piece stereo mic, and it has headphone out. It can be configured via an app. This may be the ultimate audio interface for the Action 2, though it still doesn't have power passthrough.

I just bought a belkin, USbc to usbc/3.5 TRRS ADAPTOR so I can charge the camera while using and external mic but the mic disconnects when I plug in USB c to the adaptor to charge the camera. The mic disconnects and goes back to camera microphone as soon as I plug in usb power. So annoying, I want to charge the damn camera and use external mic at the same time

@@mrheng562 I can see the vid is all about microphones, I'm not connecting a microphone, I'm connecting an aux stereo channel from my pc to the Action 2. I play guitar and want to take video from the Action 2 and audio from the pc ( guitar sound I play and MP3 backing track ). The only thing I can try is the TRRS cable, actually was using a TRS one so not sure if that was the issue. I've ordered a TRRS cable tomorrow I'll test it and let you know.

Thanks for the update, Mr. H! How are you finding the Action 2 in general? Did they reduce the minuimum focus distance at all (you know, Kasey's pet peeve!)? I know it wasn't a big problem with the Osmo Action but I do look at vlog footage sometimes and get annoyed that the background is sharper than my face.

I’m just show people ideas on how they can use mic that are laying around. I made videos about USB-C mics long before this one. Check out my past three videos. I think I was the first to post about connecting the Wireless Go ii with the Action 2. Also, Rode is sending me another device to help connect two mics. It’ll be a fun video to make, and I’m planning to make an Ultimate Audio Guide for the Action 2 video. There are people who are so confused. But, I plan to simplify it for them. :)

Thanks for the video. That is why I stopped buying DJI stuff. They make it too hard to complex to add a mic and change the pin-out so standard USBc connector mic do not work. I get the TRS vs TRRS and that is because there are two standard types and can easily adapt. DJI does not allow a standard USBC mic or a standard 3.5 mic input. Even the Pocket and action have different pin-out and require different adapters, which can get mis-placed or forgotten when you go to use the cameras.

I actually like the sound coming from the adapter + Rode Micro. The onboard mic is good, but the boosted Rode Micro is cleaner. Try listening with headphones. That might help. :)

The onboard mics - all four - should sound better than most alternatives, except where you need the mic close to a person speaking in a noisy environment, or where you need to record in windy conditions, where a 'dead cat' is required. I hate to think of the temperature that the Action 2 would reach if you put a dead cat on it...!

Check out the video on my channel. I used a USBC shotgun mic directly to the action2 cam. Its way more compact :D

I see, but there’s one potential problem. The mic will show up in videos when you swing the camera left and right to show stuff while vlogging. I’ve had that happen while using the DJI Mic.
