Here's my 2 cents with this situation: The drone is set to track a person, the algorithm expects a person's speed. The target gets on a one wheel, skateboard, bicycle, etc, traveling at a speed far exceeding a person, the drone tries to compensate but fails. Crash. I'm guessing the near ground setting will only work at walking pace. The Auto Active Track won't work while tracking a vehicle. You're cheating the system by having it track you and then getting on a one wheel, skateboard, bicycle, etc. If nothing else, this is DJI's main weakness when it comes to Active Track. I will say that some of this might be mitigated in the settings by adjusting the inner and outer circles. Just a thought.
Great video. As an ER Nurse, I couldn't help feeling concerned about the person on the skateboard not wearing a helmet. A drone can be sent back to DJI for quick and easy repairs, but a brain is much more fragile and difficult fix.
Billy, is it possible that because you set the distance levels and height levels prior to setting the close to the ground enabled that you have the drone fighting itself trying to stay at the higher level you set earlier, but then also trying to compensate for low flight with the low flight enabled?
Love the video, and showing the capabilities and limitations of the current iteration of the ActiveTrack feature, BUT I think you engaged the AUTO feature at the worst time. It's a already a known issue with tree branches, and you started it right before passing by several. I feel the AUTO mode is to give you 'automatically" a flight of various tracking angles and altitudes for a more interesting and dramatic video, but turning that on without giving the drone a sizeable canvas of movement defeats the whole purpose of the mode's intended use. Good job testing and showing what happens though, so others may learn about the mode's limitations. Keep the videos coming! Happy New Year!
Where do you get that the programming takes into consideration ‘human speed’? I doubt it. It is more constrained by its inherent abilities. But if you have some documentation I’d like to see that.
Thanx for the video Billy. Love the golf course videos. I totally agree about letting the drone have to much freedom. And please be very careful with that onewheel. I've had the Pint. It crashed me 3 times. Thank God I was wearing protective gear. I don't trust FM any longer nor support them.
What about [ DJI AIR 2s ] Billy ? will we See Anything new in updates ! Still keeping it after 3 yrs / 941 AIR-Flight Miles and one damaged motor-arm repair which dji Sent me back a New Air2s last yr. !
great demo of auto active track i had small crash too with mini 4 auto active track lost me and tried to calculate where i might be and hit some small branches was good up to that point but all was good nothin broken

It made me laugh as I crash mine in exactly the same way - testing auto when there were trees close by :D Drone survived, but never going to use it again ;) I have an impression that sensors are kind of off in the automatic, because when I wanted to do the same manoeuvre with manual (trace has been renamed in the latest updates) it didn't fly into the same tree. Shoe rescue - will keep that in mind :)
The funniest thing about Active Track is the only time I see it used is for review videos! Hahaha! Spot Light is useful, Active Track is a crash waiting to happen.
One day! Perhaps the algorithm will combine with processing power, to compensate more quickly. Until that day, I don’t trust the drone beyond my own two thumbs. Direct manual control. I have never seen a video that gave me complete, worry-free confidence in automatic modes/program algorithms.
What is the point of having 360 obstacle avoidance if you only trust it when it wouldn't be needed? It's almost as if they need a PSA that reads, "Dear Drone Consumer, For your convenience we have installed 360 obstacle avoidance cameras on our drone. Please only use 360 obstacle avoidance in wide open areas where the drone has no possible way for it to hit anything. This is the only way can ensure that our cameras will operate properly. Signed, DJI"
If anyone is going to fly using active track, because it is clearly NOT a fail safe activity, then prop gaurds should always be used. The biggest benefit is that you will be able to fly more often. If you want to use your drone like a bumper car get an Avata. Which has prop gaurds buit in. I have been flying R/C craft in one form or another for 5 Decades so if you want to fly through woods more often then get prop gaurds! and screw the tiny weight gain. 😊

It's always fun to see how DJI's active track is still lagging way behind the Skydio 4-year old technology. Watching people test DJI's latest effort always brings up the elephant in the room, why has DJI not designed a beacon? Carrying any full featured flight controller, especially with a display, just seems absurd. DJI is so far ahead of the competition in every other area, yet they have failed to go down the beacon path. Maybe 2024 now that Skydio has abandoned it's root base and taken to politics to move ahead? BTW, great interview with the DJI dude in Australia. I feel that the political games being played will stall competition, something that we need in the drone technology space.
I did an auto tracking test with Air 3 after doing the update, and I had no issues. But I was just walking on the beach, so I think the slower speed allowed it to perform better. And I had no trees or telephone poles/wires to deal with. Great testing, thanks for sharing. Sorry for the crash, I hope the drone is ok.
The active track videos are really what I'm fond of. I still believe that the Skydio 2/2+ has the advantage hands down. Please keep them coming and have a safe New Year. 🙏
I concur on the ability of the Skydio system (I own two Skydio aircraft). Unfortunately, Skydio dumped on its initial customer base... To quote Ken Dono, "F*ck Skydio!"
@edruttledge342 Yes indeed, Skydio abandoning their consumer base in regards to sales is a bummer to say the least. They have not abandoned the repair side for the consumer side which is a good thing. I got mine repaired a month ago.
@@keithbrown454 Good evening Keith. I have had some sort of dumb luck with my Skydio 2 and 2+. No repairs ever needed. But, the reality is we Skydio owners have been dead-ended. No new firmware. No new features. No new aircraft. Bummer ... as the Skydio has unparalleled obstacle avoidance. I just added a DJI Air 3 to my "fleet" to re-learn the DJI piloting experience (I had DJI before) - much has been improved since the days of the original Mavic. Be well.
@edruttledge342 oh yes, I agree whole heartedly. DJI have improved there obstacle avoidance systems tremendously. I still have the Mavic 2 Pro and that drone will always be a solid performer. Their autonomous performance has gotten better too. Keep flying and be safe out there. You be well too.👍
Great video as usual brother and you make riding that one we look so easy but I think the drone is trying to track something faster than a human walking. Also nice catch!
I didn't read alll of the comments, But from MY understanding, when you turn on "Low Ground Flight", THAT MODE DISABLES the obstacle Avoidance sensors...so that it CAN fly low to the ground without the sensors raising it higher... Check your safety settings next time you turn that feature on... and Correct me if I'm wrong! Thanks!
I just tried out this new Auto Active track today. My Mini 4 Pro just could Not even see me, let alone Follow!.. Just abysmal performance. Currently re-packing and sending the whole lot back now! PLUS..when doing a Video, the mode got stuck in Night mode!, Just could not get it back into normal mode, Everything seems to be fucked up after the latest Update!?
Great insight Billy. Bringing the Air 3 out to Jean Dry Lake Bead just south of Vegas today to try out the new update on Active Track. Can't get more wide open than that. With the new firmware update, I am with the camp that believes Activetrack Auto tracks poorly. I am flying/tracking in open areas. I find Auto mode tracks for a few swings around me but ultimately the Mini 4 ends up very high hovering above me and tracking subject (me) lost. Hoping for another firmware update soon.
Love these videos im just getting back into flying and got the DJI Avatar pro kit. Been watching your videos with it and wow some great flying and good info.
😂😂😂 I went ahead and bought the mini 4 pro and I must admit, the active track sucks!!! I love all the other drone features but coming from a Skydio 2+, DJI has a lot of catching up to do in the active track department. I dont care what non of yall say🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
