I don’t want to fly a drone with a motion controller only. A Cinewhoop needs fine control. This really limits the capability. I think they did this because they had a boat load of motion controllers left over from the first FPV drone that nobody bought.
@@markbrito21 I think they also did it because they learned a lesson for the first FPV drone. The radio will allow people to fly in full manual. Full manual is the primary mode that causes Care Refresh claims. Only people with some experience already own radios. Radios are sold out everywhere. Smart business is right. DJI will probably save hundreds of thousands of dollars in Care Refresh replacements and repairs.
@@Nine_883 I couldn’t agree more. Lucky for me a have the first FPV so all I need is the drone which is on the way! I will eventually get the new goggles. The smaller size googles and head tracking is no joke!
Hi , I was told that the older goggles have a stronger signal and therefor transmit a long distance ? Have you tested the old goggles with the Avata ? Thanks
Thanks for a great review/overview Greg! I'm going to purchase this with the regular controller. I've already purchased two FPV drones but haven't been able to fly them. Still crashing in flight simulator. This drone will allow me to actual start getting fly thru footage.
If a PIC (pilot in command) is required to have continuous line of sight contact with the drone, how is it ever legal to fly FPV? Private or commercial? Is a spotter always required?
I am not a big fan of Avata, will sell mine. I think the FCC mode and the very strong signal right on your head and eyes is not very healthy :( Gets me in FCC mode headache and irritated eyes ! In CE mode its ok which is 10x less signal strength !
As soon as you said she's never flown a drone i was thinking im surprised Kevin Morris from the FAA didn't come out of the bushes asking for her 107 certification lol.
To me, one of the major problems of this drone are its batteries, why they have used Li-Ion instead of Lipo is beyond me, this makes the Avata a wannabe "long range drone", without the ability to actually do long range, it's too heavy and too small to make me feel comfortable flying it too far away. With Lipos you definitely fly for less time, sure, but it would be way more fun to fly.
Isn't it funny how the charger from DJI for this both the plug in and the auto version are both 65W. Gee guess smart batteries limit their charge rate, duh.
Amazing video, I have been waiting for this drone since I heard of it. My only question is, does this drone have Geo Lock from DJI on it? What is the top speed on this drone? This will be perfect for real estate 🏡 Thank you 🦾
I need one piece of information that no one is talking about.... (I'm assuming no, but still need to know) I need to know if it does ANY of the DJI photo tricks that the Air 2s provides, specifically I need to know if it does any of the stitching tricks, IE: 360 photos, or ultra wide stitches, etc... or should i just be happy it takes a picture at all?
Until folks fly this drone in full manual and learn to post process using gyroflow, they will never understand how much of a game changer this Cinewhoop quad is.
“Don’t be a Greg”. Say WHAT?! I WANT to be a Greg! To know all you do about drones and aircraft, to be a teacher who helps students really understand technical info, to be respected in the aviation industry, to live in Prescott, and to speak French…. I want to be a Greg!!!!
This looks really amazing and forgiving which is awesome....just not sure why no goggles and bundled with that motion controller. Would think it should be the opposite.
@@carlose6010 I bet it’s more marketing to me. DJI FPV original is more true fpv comparatively so goggles mandatory. This is more hybrid almost still would want remote for sure.
Great review as always! 2 questions: 1. I use 65w charger for these batteries and so far, no issues. You said that could be an issue over time. What do you recommend instead? 2. Where is the 'deep dive' review of using full manual mode for the Avata? Would love to see it. thank you again!!
Steve, if yiou don't need to fast charge, I would just slow charge the batteries. That's true for any battery, it's better to charge them slowly for longevity. We don't have a deep dive on flying the drone in full manual mode. That will take some skills that are difficult to teach online.
Watching flights of this the visual observer rule would be impossible to follow. No one is going to fly a fpv drone line of sight. That would be really boring. Most of my flights are in thick wooded areas where its stays out of sight. Will it be limited and not fly in restricted areas? We have areas restricted for no reason and other areas which should be restricted and they are not.
Very nice drone, thanks for the update and info. and I don't know if it was my computer or your mic didn't want to work when recording this vid. Thanks anyway.
Hi Greg, almost finished with the Part 107 course. Great job of explaining concepts, which are far more important than answers to questions. Keep up the great work.
It looked like the GoPro you used was a Bones, which requires an external power supply. How did you power it? Did you tape a 1s to the back of the Avata? Or was I mistaken about the camera?
I do plan to get my license so you will see me applying for your classes in the future but looking at drones now. I thought this drone would be ok for flying over people because of the ducted hoops. But you said no. One reason I would need the license is I would like to do documentaries of festivals, and that would almost be impossible without flying over a group of people. I would prefer a smaller drome because it would attract less attention of the crowd.
This i a terrible drone for that. Also, you can't legally fly over people until remote id becomes a usable thing. Currently, there's like no drones with that. If you want to fly over people, get a non dji drone as none of them are cat 2 or 3
Sign up at pilot institute for the part 107 made easy course. It’s not expensive and it s a great course. I took it and scored a 93% on my exam. No I do not work for nor am I paid in any way by pilot institute. I am just a very happy alum.
@@silbay please explain. The information i know right now suggests that the remote id rule that needs to be followed to fly over people is impossible to follow due to the lack of remote id. If it exists, I would like to know but I haven't heard that it exists. I heard an MOC for remote id passed a bit ago but I haven't heard anything since
Great vid Greg, mine is on order. You mentioned pairing and couple posts on the DJI forum about this. I will often fly my DJI FPV and Mini2 the same session. Would do the same with the Avata, so, using the DJI FPV Goggles and Controller ( normal or motion) would there be a lot of steps when switching back and forth? Have you tried this?
ICIMI... When flying, does it hover in place when not using the controller sticks, like a GPS Drone? Or does it drop out of the sky like a traditional FPV.
I want to see you and Billy Kyle do a side by side review, any drone, to see which one of you can get in the most information in a given amount of time. 😂 Great review as always Greg. Thank you.
Question, does the Avata record gyro data? If it does, this could be a possible competitor for GoPro's Reelsteady. If not, GoPro definitely has the upper hand imo
It would be interesting to test in Reelsteady but I think they would need to have the algorithm available first to read the Avata data (if it's available). RockSteady does a good job, we posted another video where you can see the differences.
Did you loose signal while flying it indoor? If so, how is the return to home feature, will it keep an altitude that allow the drone to fly it indoor without going too high?
The signal strength was very solid. We never lost signal. But you can set RTH behavior to what you want. I recommend setting it to Hover when flying indoors.
I do alot of roof inspections with my mavic, but i still have to walk in attics to see the inside. I would want to use the still picture camera if this drone is capable of flying in close quarters. how well can you avoid and fly around obstacles??? could this drone save me from balancing across rafters to look and inspect attics ??
@@PilotInstitute Great work BTW keeping the news updated, and making informative videos. I will keep a eye out incase you make a close quarter maneuvering video.
So with part 107 how are you technically supposed to fly this if you cannot see this in visual line of sight? Do you need to has a observer to help you?
I would purchase and try it out as my new daily driver... BUT, the new Goggles currently have no backwards compatibility with any of my air units. Low incentive to test at the moment. It's GAME OVER for me, "for now".
But the drone *is* backwards-compatible with your old goggles, so you could always get the drone without goggles for now, and then pick up the goggles later if they add compatibility, right?
@@jesselferguson I don't think so. Or to my knowledge "the drone only", is exactly that. Or no controller. The only option for me is to buy a bundle with goggles, and controller, as I don't have a controller. In short. It's an obvious FU from DJI, IMHO. Really does show how much control they have. Truly does not sit well with me. I'm going to hold tight, to see how this whole thing plays out. But in my book, DJI shafted the FPV community in the launch. Hopefully it changes over time. Will see.
@@cognetic A controller costs $200. What's stopping you from buying the drone and the controller (which you already admitted you'd have to buy anyway) for under $900, and pairing it to your existing FPV goggles?
True the stupid low capacity easy to set on fire standard FPV batteries are cheaper, duh. OH yeah don't forget the balance charger you need and don't care about burning your house down.
