I agree. Most of the FPV reviewers compare the Avata to regular whoop drones and don't address the additional features. I can see how Mavic pilots could combine Avata footage with Mavic footage and have stunning videos. I don't have time or want to build, tune and trouble shoot an FPV drone. But with this drone I could enjoy FPV and learn to fly in Manual mode at my own pace plus have some awesome features and create stunning videos.

Outstanding, I’ve had the DJI FPV drone for a year and originally used the standard controller and was unimpressed. As soon as I switched to the motion controller, it was like moving from a bus to a Ferrari. Additionally, I’ve found that if I bring along a portable camping chair, it’s more like actually flying (you have more control) and you are less susceptible to dizziness. Thank you for posting!

I am really liking my new Avata. I haven't messed around too much with the goggles using them for motion in combo with the motion controller. I am really enjoying it so far. I'd like to get the Controller 2, but in the mean time and since it is a bit challenging to get one. I'd guess I have to settle for this combo. Might as well have some fun in the mean time. Glad you like it and boy, what a view you chose to do your video.

Never understood the hate the Motion controller gets its a fantastic way to cruise around and super fun and it was an option with the DJI fpv, which I got, the issue with the Avata is the Motion controller is the only option unless you purchase the RC separately but as you've just shown you can get fantastic results with the motion controller and head tracking, I'm ordering the Avata alone option as I have the other accessories from the DJI fpv but those Goggles 2 look great, maybe I'll pick them up further down the line, great vid Stewart.

The people who hate it are FPV enthusiasts who dislike the idea of FPV without "conventional" FPV controls. Like yes, with hundreds of hours an FPV controller can do way more, nobody is claiming this can do the same, but this is available to 99.9% of people within 2 minutes of testing it, 0 sim required. They can't get over that hump that maybe what's best for them isn't what's best for everybody else.

The combo of using the motion controller and getting use to using the gimbal with the goggles 2 doesn't take a bunch of time and adds a lot more fun to it. Nice to be able to just stay focused on a particular spot and you can just keep the Avata moving the object.

As usual, Stewart and Alina deliver the most helpful review and demo - exactly the info I was looking for. All the footage from my Mavic/Air2/Air2s is so beautifully smooth and silky, but it's also kinda boring. I bought the Avata in hopes of bringing a little dynamic and exciting footage into my videos, but I wasn't sure if the motion controller could deliver. You've shown that it can. Thank you!

@hotrodindaytona5658
@hotrodindaytona5658 Год назад
I've been doing my videos with the Motion Controller. It is absolutely fun to fly with. I can hit gaps just fine. Shawn Oz made a comment on a show that I think is absolutely true. He said if he's watching an FPV video and they do a flip he stops watching. That is probably true for a high percentage of the audience. People don't want to watch videos to get dizzy. Nothing wrong with it and its cool but that has a limited audience. As you said, the MC and head tracking give the 90% of the people enough of that FPV experience w/o having to learn Manual mode. There is a new MC coming supposedly. If they add buttons to do flips right/left and then power loop button, it will virtually eliminate the need for the regular RC. Keep in mind our best pilots flying the best Fighter Jets all fly with ......... a Joystick. If they added a front sensor for ground detection, they could add a dive button to the MC. It would end up looking smoother than any manual mode dive in all likelihood. The Wii U really started the MC craze and worked well for many games. All the VR goggles coming with MC. A motion controller for flying is the future and it will only get better. The MC is a good way to catch all those kids playing with Oculus to come over and fly drones with them. A whole new target audience sucked into drones :).
@DroneFilmGuide

Nice Video. I learned FPV the hard way about 5 years ago. Probably over $5000 in repairs in the first two years. I just got the Avata for Christmas. Excited that I will be able to let my family members actually fly it verses just watch while I fly my old drones in manual. There are lots of cool features that should make video easier and safer indoors for me. The auto braking was hard to get used to at first in normal or sport mode. No sense of floating or falling - which I do miss, but this definitely allows beginners to experience the thrill of FPV. I can't wait to throw it in manual mode after I connect my other FPV air controller. Head tracking looks pretty awesome. A little nervous to try head tracking in manual though.

Thank you for such an honest and true review without any preconceptions or biases. Excellent work. I bought the DJI FPV combo when it came out, but I am far too intimidated by it to really take it out and fly it. Sure I did a little hover and move around test. but strictly by line of site (LOS) not wearing the goggles. Now I have purchased the AVATA package with the FPV goggles V2 option. So it's great to have 2 set of goggles so I can now share flight experience. An having the controller V2 is a plus as well. The AVATA is much less intimidating and actually fun to fly. Should make the transition the the FPV unit much easier. I actually just recently started FPV with a little iFlight Alpha A85. By the 4th time around my small property, I was getting the hang of things, and stopped running into the ground so often. LOL So now I'm anxious to fly the AVATA whenever this bad weather clears. And looking forward to the FPV unit for faster flights.

I have never flown fpv except for a couple hours on the simulator. However, I am very intrigued by the idea of a cinewhoop to add to my drone footage, and this is looking more and more like something that I probably should try out. It’s too bad you can’t do some of the more exaggerated dives like you can with the sticks? I guess that will be something that I will develop in time with lots of practice on the sticks...

At the moment, the 'dive' I demonstrate in this video is really more of a controlled descent with the gimbal pointed down. A proper dive is really just cutting the power and flinging the drone towards the ground using momentum and gravity. Something I also need to work on!

Do you know what, I'm just going to say it and I don't care what anybody thinks or says. I LOVE THE MOTION CONTROLLER AND I HAVE DONE FROM THE START! There... I said it. I fly acro and I love it, I also love this too, it allows for a more relaxed way of flying and if you're good enough you can get in some tight manoeuvres. Rather than go full acro, you can use this MC to get some really smooth cinematic shots and conserve the battery for more flight time. It really does have its purpose when capturing some cinematics and you can get more time behind the stick. If you want to add some proper acro in, then you go for the RC. They both have their purpose and to me they're both equally as fun.

Thanks for that. One of the best videos I've seen about the Avata. From what I understand then, the motion controller controls the movement of the craft, while the head tracking justs add gimbal control to it (tile via the gimbal itself and pan by the craft)??? As for full manual control sometime this type of flying distracts from the content of the piece and the viewer just concentrates on the movement not the subject, so I think for the majority of film makers, this is al they'll need.

Super fun video session, I think I would be inclined to sit in a portable lawn chair with arm rests to steady my controller hand/arm combo, or tell Alina you need an ATV to sit comfortably while flying your drone much like an F-16 fighter pilot. Many fpv pilots begin with there butts firmly grounded to avoid dizziness and nausea. Great demo and good-luck with the Range Rover ATV. Cheers!

Finally! after so many useless reviews on the Avata, we get a proper goggles review explains the head tracking. What I don't understand is that I can see that moving your head up and down would be like moving the gimbal slider while flying with the motion controller which I do with the fpv anyway, but what about when you look to the side, the gimbal can't move, does the camera yaw? that doesn't work either?!

Great Stewart! When I buy it I probably won't have the cash do buy the normal controller. For what I have seen in your video, I think I won't need the regular controller. Instead I can invest in more batteries. thanks for that and cheers from Brazil.

Great stuff, thanks guys and what an amazing location. I still think the footage produced on this drone is a load of old pony though and no amount of nape-of-the-earth fun and games distracts from the mushy compressed-looking video - looks like P3-era video.

Thanks for the great information and video Stewart! Out of curiosity, is the footage near the end put through any additional stabilizer software, or just the built in rocksteady? That color graded footage looked great!
@DroneFilmGuide

Hey! It's just the rocksteady file straight off the camera. The motion controller is so smooth I can't see Gyroflow being necessary for normal and sports mode flights.

@@DroneFilmGuide I agree. What GyroFlow does give you is the option of how much horizon lock you want to apply or not in post with a live slide bar. So you do not have to commit to any settings before you view the footage.

@@airadaimagery692 I think most people are upset that DJI is releasing a drone that by default of packages included, none of them can use the manual mode. So basically DJI is selling a product that cannot be fully used without buying an additional product not included (or even in stock) with the package. Half of the shots that were put in the product launch trailer for the Avata cannot be obtained without using manual mode, which you cannot use without the FPV controller. People are also likely upset because if you know for a fact that you DON'T want the motion controller and have no interest in ever using it, that is a fair thought to have and they should be given the option to buy the Avata package with the FPV controller instead of the motion controller.

@@johnkelley3818 yes, this is very frustrating. If I’m going to spend this much money, I feel I should be getting everything that it is capable of and offered with, I agree.
