DJI focus pro unit | a 1st AC review 

The USB-C cable doesn't bother me as much, I use them already on a lot of my rig builds to power TX sometimes, with a right-angle USB-C to P-Tap which is less normally easy to knock out during filming. Been waiting to replace my Nucleus-M kit with something, and my Vaxis TX/RX system...I love that DJI has aligned all these products for me to potentially just transition to their eco-system.

Back when the Ronin 4D came out, it was the Lidar focus system that I thought was the most exciting feature. I wasn't that fussed about the actual R4D, I just wanted them to release the focus system as a stand alone product. I'm excited they've finally done it.

The pdmovie pro was supposed to be the revolutionary item for filming and now DJI has put their foot down! Very competitive! Good video

Based on your review the things I don't like are the "percentage" on the screen for distance, the non-adjustable height on the motors, the usb-c that doesn't lock, and only two marks with the A/B button. I think I'll keep my Nucleus-M for now but if they adjust the issues for a mark 2 then I'll dive in.

Thank you for the info! But what about the mount for the high bright monitor? As far as I know, it's not included. DJI doesn't sell one and I can't find it anywhere. There even seems to be an electronic connection piece on the top, so you need the monitor mount to communicate to the monitor?

Not having the height adjustment makes no sense to me. I loved the system, but thats just insane. Thats just a must have for FIZ motors. Can i control the Nucleus-M and Nano with that focus unit?

I was hoping for an Hi5 budget option, but something is missing here. Right now i have an Nucleus M and i am not happy. Hopefully there will be a Nucleus M V2.

Does the knob has hard-stops, or does it spin infinitely? Someone said that on Reddit, but I wasn’t sure.

Not bad for DJI’s ecosystem, they do a solid job taking feedback and making adjustments so who knows where it’ll go from here 🤔🤷🏾‍♂️

How it works with zoom lenses? If I setup 24-105 lens as 24mm it work only on 24mm. How LiDAR can do AF when I change the focal range? The new focus grip can be calibrated for zoom lenses????

How can I calibrate lens without hard stop?

Can it be used at same time as raveneye? That seemed to be an issue with the old lidar

If it was priced more aggresively it would alarm a lot of 1st ACs. A reliable LIDAR system that allows you to take control only when you need it for a creative focus pull makes the job extremely simple.

This is SOOO CLOSE. the lidar stuff is sick and I may pick up a creator kit, but the actual fiz system is lacking some refinement. I'm really torn because this feels like something that may be worth the early adopter tax. Part of me wants to purchase this and just hope that we will get better motors and control units in the future, But DJI has a history of dropping support for legacy products when they release an updated version.

wow for a company as dji and a products that not really that cheap these fllaws are a nogo for me. no high adjustment option is a banger. I need constantly to adjust for different size of lenses. also a usb c cable is not really professional tbh. Really unfortunate. maybe Version 2 will be better

I agree about the usb-c connection. DJI keeps underestimating the concept of solidity, they have been using this consumer connectors since ever, and that's a pity, for a unit that has such amazing features. Lemo is industry standard. And it wouldn't even set the price particularly higher, as chinese replicas are very very cheap and absolutely solid enough.

usbc integration will always make me nervous in a professional setting. usb ports and cables are fragile and can tend to be unreliable.

budget? bro its 3 times the price of the tilta nucleus nano?

They really need to release motors with 2 pin lemo and height adjustments. A bunch of USB-C cables are just unacceptable on more professional cinema builds. I was hoping this can finally replace the Tilta Nucleus on indie sets but they always drop the ball on these key details

First off, great review. I’m a full time 1st AC, honestly, this system info dropped last week and I got intrigued, but the more I look into it the less excited I am about it. The LiDAR thing may be cool, not sure yet. But the USB-C power, no support for 19mm rods, bad height adjusters, and the suspicious $150 price tag make the motors feel like a weak link in the ecosystem. You had to use mid torque on Vista Primes, but those lenses are some of the easiest to turn, I’d like to see how this thing does in a stiff lens environment, a more common situation with AC’s on set with random gear. My buddy’s round front Lomo Anamorphics need all the torque they can get lol. The hand unit seems pretty cool, similar to the CTRL.3 but feeling cheaper. I’ve pulled with most FIZ’s that exist currently, low to high end. This still feels lower to me than the Nucleus-M for price point. The Nucleus-M still seems like my option of choice for this price range. I’ve also literally pulled with that thing hundreds of hours a year for 7 years. The trick with motors, is use them with 19mm rods. That would be my wisdom to bestow to others 🤣 ultimate combo with any motors of any brand: Arri RMB-8 on cam, BT Titanium 19mm rod, motor with the 19mm bracket (adapter taken off). It’ll make everything pull right. I’ve used that on everything from old Cooke Speed Panchros to Super Baltars, Zeiss Super Speeds, Mk II’s, and Lomos. All pro lenses that are very commonly old housings and are stiff. You could probably spin a Master Prime or Signature Prime with this DJI new motor, but I don’t have hope for it in the high torque need environment

This Focus Pro gas already a no go for me over the Tilta Nucleus for all the reasons you mentioned here like usb c cables, no motor height adjustment, no 19mm rod compatibility, and many more. You can tell they made this with little to no input from career 1st ACs in the field
