Can we talk about the cost, like cool stuff in an awesome video? But hunting down the cost breakdown and trying to see what we need: one LiDAR for $700, DJI monitor/receiver for $2,500, cable for $90, hand grips for control for $730. After tax, this will cost over 4k. (This is not for RU-vidrs, so don't waste your money on it; this is for pro video work such as commercials, product videos, and so on.) If there is a way to lower the cost, like $700 for the LiDAR, that's crazy! The iPhone has LiDAR; does that make it more than half the cost of the whole phone? I don't know; it's up to the user. Like, do the cost and value equal each other out? If I only need the LiDAR and the cable, then I think the value is there. But if I am going to need about 4k worth of stuff, the value went out the window. I don’t understand the point of the comment. The entire purpose of this video and that set up is the lidar autofocus and video transmission. Why compare the price of that gear to a random camera and lenses? 🤔

For the one who start from scratch it is not a good solution ! If you have all camera gear set then you can get a 4000 dollars AF one man band

The main problem as of now is that it only works with the dji monitor. As a DP and Focuspuller on bigger commercial sets i would love to use the Lidar Focus overlay/depth map, that lets u see where ur focus and subject is but i would never use that screen as a focus monitor because it lacks too much industry standard options compared to a smallhd for example. And yes i used it before and it worked but just was unconvenient compared to a smallhd and its functions. Also would never use autofocus in 90% of scenarios...
@@DarkKai33 I got an smallHD 703 ultrabright and I’ve used this monitor of DJI a lot, and I can say that smallhd is so much better. Not even comparable. For example the quality of peaking and focus assist on this monitor is very low, and it’s not very customizable. SmallHD is a very focus puller monitor, this is not. Is good only as touch monitor for ronin 4d.
I fully tested the PD Movie Live Air 3 Smart with LiDAR and did a review. While I understand the benefit of facial recognition...the PD Movie is far better suited for the obvious, auto focus when manual focus pullers could benefit from it. DJI is onto something, but it feels like they don't wanna develop new items, and the add on and add on is getting quite crazy now. It seems as if they don't want to alienate their gimbal.
I totally agree that instead of DJI making their auto focus more simple, they just made it more complicated! PDMovie's new lidar 3 system is really amazing and really the way to go! Especially if you are filming without the help of a good assistant.
As others have mentioned, it is frustrating to see a product that only comes close to what people want. Theoretically you would only need the lidar module and their focus motor which are relatively low prices but then you also need to purchase their expensive transmission kit, monitor and the 4D handles (out of which you would only use one). If Dji would release just a Lidar FiZ kit that would be a real game changer
I had a 4D and loved manually focusing with the LiDAR waveform. So much easier than trying to pull it off with a focus wheel. And yet with this kit, in all of its complexity, I can’t do that! DJI just learn how to package this properly! Maybe make a $3k ring gimbal LiDAR package! DJI, Why do we need the wireless system if we just want to use this solo? Make it happen!
Why do I feel like this would be ideal for the Blackmagic Pocket & FF cameras, because most people are already going to add a vmount for the camera, and as this stands other cameras of that form factor would have to be rigged up in a similar way with one of these setups. If everyone is in that same clunky rig space then the only thing left is image, and Blackmagic cameras tend to produce some of the nicest footage for their price point making them almost the ideal small camera for this setup.
All that for auto focus no thank you. It has to be streamlined. You said visual response time is 150-200 millisec. Not so much. The research shows a large range between 10 to 500 millisec.
Idk why everyone says you cant run the Lidar Module solo - I have a buddy who runs it on his raptor with a pdmovie motor as well. Runs it off NPF I believe but could also just get the right cable to do DTap. Need an RS3 for initial lens calibration but you could rent one for a day just to get your lens set

My Ronin M batteries are dying, and my Sony A7S II's autofocus is a joke. I wonder what would be better: A7S III with RS3 or Ronin 4D. 90% of my work involves cars. And then I can apply a LiDar like that
You don’t really need the transmitter and receiver to make it work as a solo shooter. If you only have the RS3 pro you can set up the LiDAR with it. Once set, disconnect it from RS3 pro and use a v mount battery and an special DTap to usbc to feed the LiDAR. The system would keep the last settings you had on the RS3. This a bit more budget friendly, takes a bit more time and preparation while setting it, I also have noticed that with my 85mm 1.5 focusing wasn’t as smooth than with wider focal lengths but overall it does a pretty decent job.
One reason it might be useful to have both DJI Transmission TX/RX units or TX/HB-Monitor units on the same rig is for SteadiCam Use! - You might well have the TX and HB-monitor on the same rig and then extra RX units on set for video village or 1st AC…so DJI may want to have a reduced power setting mode like the TeraDek Bolt does so you can put the steadicam’s RX/HB-M units in low power mode for that use case
Still can't find a video showing the possibility to use 2 dji focus motors working properly with the brightmonitor and handles to be able to pull focus and iris at the same time...
FWIW those aren't vintage Cooke lenses the Alexa 35 is using. That is Cooke Mini S4/i which were introduced around 2011. Also look into the Preston Ranger 2. That is what we use on big sets for this kind of technology when needed. Most jobs don't need something like this as professional 1st AC's are quite good and a lot of narrative work requires control and understanding of focus more than just tracking whoever is in the middle of frame. Bouncing focus for dialogue scenes are a good example. Most AC's are very happy for more tools like this to become options because focus is a hard job and it's only a fraction of what an assistant cameraperson does. I've been filming my feature film with the Ronin 4D by myself all one man band and acting in it as well. The Lidar focus really impressed me when on the 90mm it would still track me perfectly when I was breathing in and out.
I played it back 4 times. He says "It gives any camera autofocus WITHOUT THE RS3 PRO GIMBAL". This is not true. You cannot use this system without having an RS3 pro gimbal to calibrate lenses.
Just fyi, there is Axoncine BM3DF-g2 that works with DJI 3D focus without gimbal, totally independent, but you need also Tilta Nucleus Nano motor/control wheel. I use it with ZCam + anamorphic lenses/adapters. It is not perfect and doesn't have any face detection or tracking, but follows focus well when subject in 3D "eye". You can store 5 lenses calibration data and can be switched by button when swapping lenses without recalibration. Not very pricey either. Works for basic shoots within 10 m or so, ie what 3D can see.
Hey really curious: would you say the lidar range finder would perform better than an autofocus lens? Considering getting this for my Canon c70/R5 setup... all RF glass.
That's not true! Central Camera's has a wide selection of cinema production cameras. They like Varicams but also have RED etc including Angenieux Lens and more. My studio was upstairs and I'd often talk to Mike (one on the partners). They have a robust soundstage as well.
Hi, is ot possible to get the lodsr depth map on any other monitor using the lidar only? Just want to use it as a focus pulling visual aid but don't use all the other dji kit. Would want tilta linked to other monitor such as atmos . Thanks for your help
LIDAR with an auto focus lens? I feel like I saw a review stating that you can use LiDAR with them but I’m seeing people stating that you can’t. Obviously the best thing about the LiDAR is to be able to use all the manual lenses, but being able to get excellent focus in the dark is a great attribute, doing it with an auto focus lens would be a great addition for shooting wedding videos, when you want to instantly switch to snap a photo. I’m very new to all of this so if there is something I’m missing that make is not feasible and taking another route is better, then I would love be to hear it. Thank you. I can 100% tell you the coms feature is not replacing HMEs on set for operators. They already hate that shit enough and 1st ACs will still prioritize a comtec. Plus the Ops don't want to talk to the DIT anyway.
Such a messy build!! You got loose cables going everywhere? Even with the arri, why did you put the transmitter sticking out over the the top of the v-lock? At Pro level we don't build like this mate!

I imagine an open source autofocus system that could outperform anything available today. DJI's results are inferior to the best autofocus cameras because the system is reactive, not predictive. The best autofocus cameras seem to track a subject and incorporate things like direction and velocity so the the camera can guess the focus in the future. Now imagine an open source system that people could train / program to predictively track specific things more accurately. Using tools like machine learning, these predictive algorithms could not only track highly specific things better (my car versus other similar cars that pass me), they could take into account the physics of that object to make better predictions (e.g. a helicopter flies differently than a butterfly).
To this day I am waiting for someone breaking apart the RS2 and reverse engineer a small box, that let us use/configure the 1st gen focus modul and motor..
Professional focus pullers do not have a latency of 150ms. 150ms is the average reaction time of a human but a professional focus puller will know when a subject will be at a certain point and be at that distance in advance. Only amateurs "react" to what they see on the monitor. After a couple hundred hours of practice manual pullers can get perfect results. The more practice/talent you have the more consistent you will be. For training this you can go to a soccer match or something like that and always stay focused on the ball when you get better you will understand the ball movement when it will stop and how you have to move your wheel accordingly. Practice makes perfect. So no this is not better then a manual puller. Its still awesome tho not denying that at all btw!
Yeah really looking for a followup on this.! - i for one would want to use this on the Tilta Float setup.. so the HBMonitor and TX would be on the same rig… So have to figure that out… and also would want to use the relocation wires for the handles to maybe merge them into one “SuperHandle” Tilta.. poke poke! - since we need to work One handed on a steadicam if were operating and using all the camera control / lidar!… but we only have the small area for monitor and controls on the float or most steadycams.
In my fuji-4 auto focus work better and faster then i see that cheap eqip :). If you use you eqip and can focus in scenes u dumb. This is great thing for manual (cine lens), and that's all. This focus sistem for manual lens. And nothing else. You setup cost lots $ but nothing about film use. Not in studio rec, use autofocus in camera. That's fun.
Whole thing is for professsional anamorphic and manual lenses and all the youtube reviewers are now like snake oil sellers.They do not say raveneye or active track does not work with anamorphic lens 😡. This video transmission monitor system is about 25 times expensive than raveneye.
I don’t understand, do you need the monitor and everything else or can I just use my gimbal to save the lens profiles and the lidar hub? It seems every RU-vidr is talking about all of these at the same time so it’s not clear if you need all of this to get lidar working without the gimbal or just the lidar hub and the DJI lidar sensor…..
Honestly would rather deal with that setup or the 4d also you still would have to wear a tilta float to match smoothness? Not criticizing just curious, I have the 4d and the internal prores still beats most most cameras I can rig on a gimbal and I put in and out my bag in 10 seconds but am open minded to other options. Haven’t watched videos about gear in a year or so since I’ve been traveling overseas but this feels like a commercial to make me buy everything 3:37 to feel like a real pro. Good video but don’t buy the hype. My a7siii with ninja v and ronin combo is all I need.
here is how to fix this and turn it into a usable system for " solo op " make a cheaper monitor with 1500 nits, touch screen and connect the lidar to it done.
all you need is an A7siii, an FX3, or an FX6 and you're set. You don't need to sit there like a nerd and rig up your lenses with focus motors, and have to rebalance your gimbal 5 times before you get it right. Those cameras have much better autofocus than this lidar system and you can set your gimbal and camera up in seconds. This is a useless product that's a waste of money. Literally.
Can I use just the DJI LiDAR Range Finder to Transmitter Cable Hub, and the DJI LiDAR AF module? Without the video receiver? If so, what app would I use to change the settings and control the focus? Thanks so much, this video very helpful.
