I don't disagree by any means, he's one of my favorite drone reviewers out there! Doesn't mean the mis-pronunciation of a particularly key photography and cinematography term doesn't bug me though.
Kras 4 he is in Hawaii & they have their own accent and enunciation. I’d like to hear the critics living on the main land try to pronounce some Hawaiian street names.

Great video. I just got this drone as a gift from My wife. It is unlike any other RC airplane I have flown. I have a smaller Blade QX 180 I am dangerous with but this thing just fly itself. I lived on Kauai with my parents back in the 80s and have memories of flying my RC fixed wings from the cane fields and the wind is no joke. So much respect what these modern drones can do.

Beautiful views of Maui. You are so lucky to be able to fly all year long. I am a camera guy and you almost got it right. When you are shooting at 30 fps your shutter speed should be double in this case 1/60. The aperture only affects depth of field and at the height you were filming you wouldn’t notice much difference. So with the filter you had on you should have left the aperture on auto and set the shutter to 1/60. I noticed when you were scrolling through the apertures that f5 gave you 1/60 shutter. With a different filter or a different day this might all change depending on the conditions. ISO is another one you have to watch. You want to keep it as low a number as possible to avoid the image getting too noisy. I love your channel and your location to fly in. I have a foot of snow outside and too cold to go flying. I’ve ordered a tiny woop for Christmas to fly indoors for the winter.🤙

Not sure what's in the drone's camera, but in SLR's, the aperture is a small diaphragm that opens and closes based on the aperture setting (an aperture is an opening, a small hole or slit). The aperture setting adjusts the size of the opening. Aperture size generally affects two things: the shutter speed and the depth of field. Lower aperture numbers mean a larger aperture opening, so an aperture of 3 is larger than 5 or 6. The lower the aperture number, the faster the shutter speed (the opening is larger, so it's letting in more light), but it also means a shorter depth of field (the area in the picture that's in focus in terms of distance from the camera from two points, the closest and furthest that the subject is in focus). That's why you saw the shutter speed increase when you changed the aperture to a lower number setting and also why you felt the low aperture number seemed blurry because it was, at least for the areas outside the depth of field. For a drone, since it's shooting video and at a relatively wide field of view, higher aperture numbers will provide sharper footage across the entire view in general. You could use the larger aperture openings possibly for some special effects for the right scenario, or even in lower light situations, just keep in mind that you will have blurry areas outside the depth of field for that setting. It seems the drone is using actual aperture F-stops you'd find in photography (you'll see them annotated as "F3", "F4.5", etc). They're not simply one-up linear numbering, 2.8, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 6, 7.1, etc are common, with 2.8 being pretty "fast." In the photography world "fast" means the aperture can open wide enough and the lens capable of picking up enough light to still have relatively good shutter speeds in low light situations. For example, a fast lens is usable without a flash to lower ambient light than a slower lens. Fast lenses for cameras are typically pretty expensive. Theoretically, F11 (the highest aperture setting on the drone) should provide the sharpest footage, however in the real world, as a lens approaches its smallest aperture size, diffraction becomes an issue and can cause blurriness. Typically, a lens produces its best image quality somewhere in the middle of its aperture range, so in the case of the Mavic, somewhere around 5, 6, or 7.1 would probably work best.
Another great review. Seems like you are more happy with this drone then your initial first impressions. I believe you had concerns about the camera being a bit soft. On my 5K screen your sweet spot is around 5.6 to 6.3. My m2p sweet spot is from 4.0 to 5.6. For review purposes I suspect auto settings are appropriate. Wondering if for your serious non review work you shoot in manual. Anyway I'm not a hardcore DJI fanboy, but I gotta say they have industry leading technology that gives me fantastic results. You are well on your way to becoming one of the top drone reviewers on u tube.
He was in Aperture priority mode. As he opened the aperture (lower number) the shutter speed increased to maintain the exposure. If he'd have been in full manual camera mode, opening the aperture would increase the exposure. At this distance from the focal point, depth of field (controlled by aperture) is a non issue.

Dustin nice info. I would never have white balance on AUTO. It's the devil. Either put it on sunny or cloudy and keep shutter correct with good appeture. That's the go to settings from all the reviews etc..
Hi Dustin, great video again👍.You should also do an update review on the Parrot Anafi after these months. You will be blown away!! For below 550 $ you can buy a super drone...the new added functions are incredible, Parrot did a great job here. Even the in-purchase are only 0.99 $. 👍
I have found that if Precision landing seems off, by 3 to 20 feet, even, do two things: (1) Pause on takeoff at around 30 feet to allow visual sensors to accurately get a fix on landing pad. (2) Recalibrate the IMU. This makes a huge difference. IMU gets thrown off by flying in windy environments getting blown around that requires it to make a lot of adjustments. There are plenty of videos showing how to do recalibration. And remember the process steps for IMU calibration on Mavic 2 is different than for Mavic Aire or for original Mavic Pro.
Hi Dustin, at 6.3 you are already hitting diffraction. The Mavic is sharper between f/2.8 and f/4 due to the crop factor that must also be applied to the aperture and not only the focal length. Whom told you to close the aperture simply has no idea of what he is doing... Also you’re obviously not seeing any changes in brightness as your shutter speed and ISO are changing in auto mode.
You’re welcome man. Please don’t listen to all the people giving advices without having personal experience with this little beast. Like on the forums many “armchair” experts give advices on how to use a DSLR while their portfolio is no better than any photo taken with a Barbie toy camera... if you wish, do the test yourself (that’s an idea for a future video I guess :). Get the drone in the sky and take the exact same photo at different apertures. You’ll realize yourself that the sharpness starts dropping after f/5.6 at best. I salute you.
Great video Dustin, I always enjoy your narrations. Btw, you can turn off that annoying RTH beep by pressing the power button on the DJI controller (not the iPad). However, the 'low battery' beep cannot be turned off unfortunately. Precision Landing is now on by default, you don't need to do anything special on take-off. And, as I'm sure you've heard by now, there's no 'r' between the 'a' and 'p' in 'aperture' :)

Another great review. Have you ever fly any of the Mavic or Evo closer to the beach area? Can we get some time lapse testing on some wave actions with this and the Evo for comparison sake. Thanks again for sharing a view of Hawaii.
Hey Dustin. Just throwing an idea for your videos. DJI recently released waypoints functionality for Mavic 2. With waypoints, the drone is supposed to finish its mission even if the drone disconnects from the controller. Can you do a long range flight test using waypoints? It might be useful for urban locations where there are many structures blocking the drone from the controller.
I've always like polarising filters on cameras whether video or still. The precision update works and works well. Interesting update on what has changed _Not that it matters but 198th_ :D
On the camera stuff: for video (30FPS) you should use multiple of that, so 1/30 or better 1/60 (higher values will cause "stutter"). The f-stop (ap) for such wide lens is prob best around f6.3-f8 (sweet spot for this lens). the more you open the f-stop towards f2.8 you get a shallow depth of field - thats why it gets more blurry. i bet also this lens will get worse with lower f-stop (2.8) so another reason it gets blurry ... i would aim for 1/60, ISO100 and F6.3 if it´s possible. with that you should get the sharpest picture. thats photography 1x1 :) btw. is there a 24fps setting on mavic2?
Gregor Mima The Mavic is not soft at f/2.8, it is the opposite. A 1” sensor has a crop factor of x2.7, that is also applicable to the aperture. So f/2.8 is equivalent to f/8 approximately. At f/4 it will be equivalent to f/11. Anything above that introduces softness. I’ve done several tests with the Pro and posted sample on the DJI Mavic Forum.
Gregor Mima Not at all, do you own the drone? The corner fallout is no different than any expensive DSLR lens, anything out of the ordinary should be returned for a replacement. I have Zeiss Distagon(s) costing as much as the drone that aren’t sharper than the little Hasselblad module in the extreme corners. FYI I am a professional photographer and been shooting for over 20 years.
You may already know by now. You do not have to go up thirty feet for the precision landing to work on the Mavic 2's. You can launch strait off the landing pad, in any direction, and it will still precision land.
I have invested in metals as much as I can afford. So I don’t have cash readily on hand. Not sure which drone I want to buy. Perhaps the Air some day. I also love that Parrot Disco series Dustin did. I am considering that fixed wing. I started saving for what ever I make my mind up on. This skate park footage is pretty dam incredible. It’s cold and raining where I live. I can only fly my tiny $35 drone

Good video man. But I'm still not sure why it is soooo important to use this precision landing like ever. I guess I have just always been in the habit of flying mine in manually. Part of the fun I guess.
The polarizing filter effectiveness depends on the angle of the lens to the sun..it varies depending if you are aiming downsun or towards the sun or cross phase or any other angle...so one setting does not always work.
Hey can you do a test with the new Mavic 2 “way points” and take it completely out of RC range to see if you can find any faults… I understand you can lose radio signal completely and it’ll stay on course even if it’s completely out of range otherwise, and still find its way back home
hello dustin! great video as always ;). i own a parrot bebop 2 power for about 8 months now and im super happy with it. in the future (6 to 12 months) i am planning to upgrade. are the extra 300 bucks for the mavic 2 zoom worth it or would you rather recommend the mavic air fly more bundle?
If DJI ever implemented a laser on the bottom of the drone, it would be able to give very accurate height levels based on GPS mapping. So it wouldn't matter that you are on a hill the GPS mapping with a laser pointer would tell you exactly how high you are.
Great video, once again! I'm getting a ton of great information for you on these Mavic videos. This will be huge for me when my new Mavic 2 pro shows up this coming week. Its my first "real" camera drone! On my end, when you were cycling through the aperture settings that was making a huge difference in the picture quality, that was great look at that feature. Do you have a recommendation for an Ipad holder? I have a feeling I'm going to like flying better with my pad , rather than the phone. Also, curious about the elevation and how its recorded. Does it shoot what the current elevation is from the ground to the drone at all times or is it going off of where it took off from, "home base", and that is the calculated elevation from the take off spot? Thx

I'm counting days that my Mavic will comes. :) Fly more combo is already near, just day or 2 away. :) How is with Android? Does it work and update at Android? If I remember there was a problem at updates. If I heard right, you said that you have 1080p head camera. The video image looks great. Video is so clear, colors looks great to. If you wouldn't told, I would bet that is 4k for sure. :)
Hi Dustin I just had a brain wave!!!🤪would you think using dual controller mode! Distance test: you take off and 2nd controller takes over after say 3/4 miles away with 2nd pilot at that distance.. just a thought!!
Can you fly this at knight? It would be great to get above the trees, buildings and light to capture the stares on a clear knight. and maybe the groups of stares such as O rian.
Every time im looking for a new drone, i come here. Hello Dustin its been awhile, looking for a new drone, so far crash burn x1 stolen x1. I live in SF, suffer from getting old i.e cant see well, need a good safe and easy drone to fly for me. So in your ginormous experience, this or mr orange? 2nd seems to be favored currently as i am taking financial loss into accountability. As for pronunciation or enunciation, i didn't even get it? half of most people cant even understand my half rate pigeon accent which is a blend of Singaporean English mixed in with 25yrs of Californian American. Sounds like a drone with with 360 obstacle avoidance like the Mavic 2 Zoom is right for you and keep it in tripod mode with geofence on 🙃🍻😁. Dustin, just wondering what would happen if you moved your body on RTH so that the image it took before takeoff and the one it has when it attempts RTH would be slightly different. Would it still be as precise?
I wouldn't touch the gimbal, while the drone is turned on. I am talking about the Mavic Pro 1. Even DJI says, that this isn't good in the manuals. Changed this with the Mavic 2? Btw. Have a great christmas time. I hope I can fly soon again. That last three weeks just storm, rain or to dark (flying in darkness is forbidden in Germany)
