Went for another run with my DJI Mavic 2 Zoom to test out all the Active Track 2.0 Modes.
Trace: Good for following behind you
Profile: Good for following along side, or looking back toward you from the front
Spotlight: Good for acting like a tripod that auto pans and tilts to follow you, or for another person to fly and keep you in focus
I've found that I can get about 2 miles of running (8:30 min/mile pace) out of each battery. That goes down when you spend time fiddling with the drone to position it where you want it.
Also found that it's best to set the Return To Home (RTH) point on the controller and allow it update dynamically. But you still have to be careful, it only works if your phone has a strong enough GPS signal. If that signal is weak, it either won't let you set the RTH location to the controller, or if it did, and it gets weak later, it will default back to it's last known RTH point.
Drone: DJI Mavic 2 Zoom
Music: "Smile" by Jeremy Blake
NLE: PowerDirector 15
Trail: Tolt-Pipeline Trail near Duvall, WA

The proof is in the pudding. Thank you for letting it just role so we could see for ourselves just how the Active Track 2.0 behaves. This gives me the confidence to give this a try on an upcoming cross-country ski trip.

Hello Jason. Well done. For me it's the most helpful tracking example I have found. Thank you for sharing.

@@JethroXP I bought the Mavic mini 2 days ago. Was it any good? Yes for the price with limited settings. I was scrolling through and found this video. I just took back the Mavic mini and made an order for this one. You just cost me $700 dollars. The Mavic mini cannot active track you. This is much needed as I am doing a Charity bike ride soon cycling 5000 miles and was very impressed how this tracked you. Great video and very under rated. @0:59 is a fantastic shot. Fronts shots are amazing too. I will be cycling by crystal clear beach fronts. 3193 views I will add another 50 views by tomorrow you see.

@@johnnygreenshirt6215 Sorry about the added expense! But I believe you'll be much happier with Mavic 2. I spent a couple months looking at various models before deciding on the Mavic 2 Zoom, and over a year and half later I have no regrets. 5000 mile bike ride for charity sounds amazing! I'd love to the see the video of that, so please post a link here in the comments when you complete that. Best wishes for a successful ride!

@@JethroXP I will add to you tube. It's gonna take me 70 days to complete. It will be many videos like a documentary. I Purchased the bike, go pro SLR Camera but gonna buy another go pro hero 8, tent, camping gear, just need a Mac book now and was wondering if any knowledge whats the best editing software? I have iMovie on my iMac but again it has limited editing software. Final cut pro seems to be one many are using. Here is my Facebook page. Will remove link once seen.

@@johnnygreenshirt6215 If you are just editing some clips, with some simple transitions, titles, music, and voice overs, I believe iMovie should be fine. My sister runs her own videography business and swears by Final Cut Pro, but that can be an overwhelming piece of software because of all the power it has. She has used it for years and has even taken classes on it. So if you aren't doing professional level stuff I'd recommend sticking with iMovie until you outgrow it's capability.

Hi Jason Very informative. Just one more question. Did you carry the TX with you? Is this a must? Is Obstacle Avoidance and APAS available in the three Modes (Trace, Profile and Spotlight)?
@JethroXP
@JethroXP 5 лет назад
I did carry the controller with me, it was i the backpack I was wearing. Depending on how far you are going it's probably not a must, but if you ever got out of communication range with the controller the drone would initiate auto return-to-home. And if something happened that required you to take active control of the drone you wouldn't be able to without the controller. And yes the obstacle avoidance is active in those modes, as it did actively avoid a pole that I ran close to.

Jason Coon First thanks for this video. Could you tell me, if i run in a Athletics track must i carry the control?

Whenever I put the controller in my bag, it moves d drone about, any advice?
@JethroXP
@JethroXP 5 лет назад
I didn't attached the control sticks because I was afraid that would happen. Its surprisingly easy to control without them, just press your thumbs into the holes where the sticks screw in and you can control it very easily. Then when you put it in your backpack there is nothing to get snag or pull. I also looked at using a bungie cord to strap the controller to the outside of the bag, but found the no-stick option worked so well I didn't need to do that. Good luck!

How you keep remote from moving while you ran. Just remove sticks?
@JethroXP
@JethroXP 4 года назад
Correct, I removed the sticks when I put it in the backpack. When I did need to control it I found it was remarkably easy even without the sticks.

Trace mode @2:25 made me laugh. Drone got fed up off following you. I suppose it would track you climbing a tree or a small rock face Jason?
@JethroXP
@JethroXP 4 года назад
Hehehe, the drone said "Nope!" :-) I believe it could track you do most anything as long as you weren't moving faster than it can follow and are not too far away like I was in that shot. I suspect there is a minimum size in pixels that it can effectively track, and at 150 feet away I wasn't occupying enough pixels in the sensor.

Hello Jason, really a nice video!😃👍👍👍 I'm thinking about buying a drone for recording my inline skating at www.flaeming-skate.de. If I buy one, it will probably be the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. Do you remember the elevation in the end of the video when the drone was behind you while you were running? What is the lowest elevation for trace? 5...6 ft? Do you remember the time for the 4 miles when you needed 2½ Batteries? I'd like to record at least 12 to 20 km on inline skates with break - that would take me 1½ hrs. Are 3 batteries enough? Greetings from Berlin, Germany
@JethroXP
@JethroXP 4 года назад
Hello! Glad you enjoyed it! I believe at the end it was probably 15 feet AGL. Hard to tell for sure though, even looking at the logs of the flight because the trail elevation varied a lot. The lowest I had it was about 6 feet, just above head height. Just be careful going that low because you don't want to hit anyone (including yourself) in the head accidentally. The overall running time was probably 34 minutes, but I did stop several times to experiment with different settings. Also the drone was having to constantly adjust it's height, speed, and position as I ran, so this probably worked it very hard. I suspect if you are inline skating you will be moving faster than I ran and on much smoother line, so the drone will likely not need to work as hard to follow you, resulting in better battery life. Though under ideal conditions 3 batteries would be just enough for 1 1/2 hours of flight, so you'd probably want to have 4 with you for that long of a flight. If you post a video please link to it here! Tschüss!
