DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Review

I have the Osmo Action 3 and 4: both of which are outstanding - a real game changer would be if DJI would add an adjustable focus, even if its just manual, or at least handle close-up shots with sharper focus. The Super Night Mode makes a massive difference, by the way. I would probably get it for that alone.

Sold my Action 3 this morning and ordered the Action 5 Pro. Still keeping my Action 4. The two will make a great combo.

Is the steady horizon still cropped?

I m satisfied with my Action 4, no need to upgrade like iphone users doing it every year. You buy once action camera and that is enough.

I’m picking mine up tomorrow, now I need your set up guide, I’ve always had GoPro’s this is my first Action, no pressure but get a video filmed, edited and loaded by tomorrow afternoon 😂

I got Action 4 earlier this year. It is my first action camera and I can't recommend it enaugh. Great quality and super reliable. I love very natural colors and contrast in my videos. It leaves some space for my amateur editing.

So excited! I have the 4 but will upgrade!

Thanks for the great review Shawn 🙂 I read somewhere that it was supposed to have 3 internal mics. Is one of them at the back to capture your voice? When you vlog a scene in front of you instead of your face, you couldn't get good voice audio on previous cams as you weren't facing the cam, so do please let me know. I thank you in advance!

It's great to see all the new ways Osmo has improved their action camera , the problem I have with the Osmo action 3 is the magnetic coupling I get a noise in the video like a clicking noise I have had to tape the magnetic coupling mount to reduce the noise which has put me off buying another Osmo action camera

One last question sry. Can you tell me your export settings? your videos look much better even i set my export to 80mbs bitrate and quicktime highest quality

excellent breakdown. just came here after i skipped john hick’s paid promotional review which was not succinct & 30 minutes long of biased anecdotal schilling of this camera. i guess the benefit of when reviews all land at the same time is that you have your choice of what reviews to see. yours is top notch and straight to the info. thanks for the review.

Just in time for my Asia vacation this December! I cancelled my Dji Neo purchase cause of the delayed shipping from Dji (Oct.5 shipping)😕, made the right choice, my oldest action cam was a Hero 8, have the Pocket 3, insta X4 but never upgraded my action GoPro style cam..not going to miss the Neo, as i have the avata 1/2..

ACtion 5 hit the right spot, better low light quality, excellent day video, backward compatibility with A4 battery, GPS, bigger screen, longer battery...subject tracking is awesome, hopefuly they implement on A4 with new FW update

Do you know if it supports 60 FPS Rtmp? or is it still limited to 30FPS? I can't find any info about it online and I'd really love to know before I purchase it full of expectations, without it meeting those :)

I was looking to buy a new action cam this year, but since I'm disappointed with both the GoPro 13 AND the Action 5, I guess I'll be waiting to see what comes out next year. Neither of them have done enough of an upgrade to justify a purchase from owners of current release cams.

Great review, very thorough! I am very tempted to get one of these. I have one of the DJI gimbals that I use with my iPhone for no budget filmmaking, but this unit has so many useful features! That horizon stuff would be so cool! Thanks from a new subscriber!

Hello! Thank you for your review. Still haven't saw it all, but i would like to leave you one simple note. Your brake levers are too high up. You will feel much more comfortable and secure if you point them downward slightly. It is just one screw and rotate them.

Just wait, next year they'll release the Osmo Action 5 Pro Plus Ultra Mega Edition with a slightly bigger battery and a new color, and all the reviewers will like "OMG This is the best action camera ever! DJI has really outdone themselves this time!" Don't get me wrong, this camera looks pretty good, but this whole cycle of releasing a new product every year with minor improvements gets a little tiring.

Bad ass. The night/low light footage looks incredable. According to DJI the slow mo performance is 240fps @ 1080p BUT "intelligently generates up to 960fps"....Hmmm interesting

Looks solid. I'm curious how the 4k60 HLG footage matches with the Air3. I was considering the Hero13 but this will likely be a better fit considering I'm already well into the DJI space with my drone lol

Sooo DJI managed to squeeze a liitle more juice from the battery while maintaining the same form factor and compatibility, only Gopro couldn't... RIP gopro!

Tbh im not sure. Is it worth the 100 euro difference compared to the action 4? Apparantly it has a bitrate issue as well?

When you record a video for over an hour does it create multiple clips or is it one video file?

Typical, I just bought an action 4 last week 😂 I love it so far, might need to get an action 5!

Why did they add pro in the name? For marketing or does it mean a cheaper action 5 with less bells and whistles might also be released

That's lot of upgrade from action 4. Go pro 13 was definitely not at all a big upgrade. Only thing we didn't get 1 inch sensor.

Not a fan of GoPro but bringing back the GPS chip on the camera keeps me a GoPro customer. 'Action' cameras without GPS is like maps without street names.

Could you show with this model exactly how you take the video off maybe a couple of different examples I have an iPad Pro, the larger one and this year’s I think it’s called the m4. I bought one of these cameras when they first came out and when you go to get the Footy off, it’s so twisted and labeled in ways that’s almost impossible to know what it is. You have to really dig all through the SD card and open up 10 or 12 folders just find the footage that you shot, I would be curious to see how this one does if they may fix those problems. Normally, when I have a camera and I put my SD card into either computer or an iPad, you can see like a little thumbnail of the picture or at least the date on the Omos. It’s just like a whole bunch of letters thumbnail and you have to play a guessing game last time I shot I had to actually take it somewhere and get them to find the video because we thought it was lost.

I have just ordered an Osmo Action 5 Pro for live streaming via RTMP, and noticed that there are absolutely no specs listed regarding live streaming resolutions supported anywhere! Not even on the official site. Please could someone shed some light on the live streaming resolutions supported by this camera?

I think 2.5 hours of footage during fishing is enough to upload a 30 min youtube video ... That s okey with me

I’m a bit disappointed with the upgrades, still happy with my 3 and 4 for moto vlogging and travel. Waiting for the predictable firmware updates and deals at a later date, why did they add PRO to the name?
