Samuel! An absolutely brilliant video! You broke down every possible scenario for those of us eternally weighing options. I rarely comment on RU-vid videos, but your passion is very apparent and you put a lot of it into the making of this video, thanks a lot! Ross in Dublin 🇮🇪
Thanks a lot buddy. Glad you found it helpful. My first video of 2024 will be about recording sound for social media and content creators, quick and easy, but good. I think you'll find it helpful.
What an excellent unbiased analysis! This makes so much sense. Near the end you sum it up in the way I would myself - pick the right tool for the job. There is no "best" unless you ask "for what?"
Wow! Thanks for the feedback!! I am really glad that you and other people find them helpful! I just wish my subscription count would grow as quick as the positive feedback I get! 😂😂
I’ve been looking for a video that would break down why I should buy the pocket 3 if I already have an iPhone 15 pro for hours. This was the breakdown I needed. Thank you!
In the next iteration of Osmo Pocket, if they somehow manage to have several lenses with different focal lengths and still make it within the same small form factor, it's pretty much game over for compact camera and mobile phone.
True. But I am sure freewell with come up with a wide angle lens that you can use ND filters with, and if they were the make a decent telephoto lens, uff, that would be very, very good..... or mobile/ travelling filming would be amazing...
There is a fantastic video. I ended up buying the Pocket 3 for the reasons you gave as the ease of use of small footprint but I am now gonna keep my Sony ZV-E10 for my behind the scenes to document my main cameras and setups.
I am heavily invested in both the Sony ZV-! and smartphone gimbals and phone accessories. That said, if I was starting over I might just get the DJI. The convenience / time-saving is overwhelming...and something I highly value. It's hard to justify the Pocket 3 when I have all this other stuff, but if I was in a situation where I film everyday for YT or something else, I would have to get it just for the convenience/ time saving. This feels like the beginning of a whole new kind of device. I can easily imagine a larger version (but still small) with an integrated zoom lens and even interchangeable lenses (assuming they can bet it to instantly balance without a bunch of adjustments) Its easy to throw around the term gamechanger, but this might be it!
You are onto something. For vlogging and talking to camera as you walk, and similar situations, in my opinion, there is nothing better than these type of cameras. And the P3 is the king of them all. Great image quality, always nicely stabilised, great low light. It does kit have the look of a camera with interchangeable lenses, but then again, it is not intended to compete against those. For what it was designed for, it does a tremendous job!
@@SamuelSotiega This camera is surprisingly good for action too. I usually shoot static shots on my 5D3 with magic lantern, and the pocket has shown itself to perfectly slot in between an action camera and having the disposable income to put a more expensive camera on a gimbal in order to shoot action. Having care refresh makes it totally worry free, while still nimble enough and with tech like tracking so that I can focus on my own movement and safety instead of having to monitor the camera.
Today I decided to sell pocket 3 and buy iphone 15 pro max / or / 16 pro to be able to record in log also, and have any zoom. I will use combo dji action 4 + iphone ^^ best setup for vloging 4 me :) pocket 3 has same quality as action 4 during day, but for night shoots I also can use phone.
As long as you feel it is the right decision, all I can say is, congratulations for feeling so confident. There is not one formula that is better than other. We all work in different ways. If you feel this set up is right for you, then it is the best set up for you!! I toast to that!
I think I'm going to be rewarded for waiting for version 3 of this Osmo Pocket! This will be my first gimbal, and after the ZV1, its stabilization is going to change my life (and my desire to shoot lots of things). Thanks for this video, you're relevant and passionate, I'm always happy to discover your tests :) Cheers from France. Michael
Thanks for your feedback and I am really glad that this video was helpful! The pocket 3 is tiny but mighty. DJI has done a good job here, not perfect, and I wish it could do somehting differently, but it is a great tool for sure.
My i phone 14 pro is excellent with my DJI osmo 6 however it has one downside which you would have thought that Apple could fix with an update,it’s this you cannot swop lens from front to back if you are vlogging without stooping and starting.Ive got the pocket 3 also and its so neat its so easy to use and for the fact its so compact
It is one of the things that I love about it, that you ca easily switch from front to back without losing any quality, and skill able to look at the screen to know what you're doing...
With higher end video cameras with bigger sensors, shooting in DNG RAW doesn't improve image quality by very much (unless you are doing heavy editing and image manipulation). Where Cinema DNG makes a HUGE difference is on tiny sensors like the ones in smartphones.
I have looked into it. They recently released it, I believe. I might approach them, but maybe I will consider something for when the iphone 16 is released as I think that model will have some major upgrades.... But thanks for bringing it to my attention!
it's made up of 2 parts, this amzn.to/3MpgRd9 and also this amzn.to/3Mol8xF but you also have this purpose built set up.. amzn.to/3X6lWfp Definitely more options now than when i made the video!
What about doing ENG style informal interviews in the field where the camera operator (one's self) is also the interviewer and in the shot? Is the Pocket3 suitable? If, say, someone were to catch a quick flight to Vegas and walk around the CES show for a day or two but want to travel really light and have a no-worries setup?
It will totally work for that! As a matter of fact, I am on holidays now abroad and normally I would take my canon camera and lenses and this time I have just taken my pocket 3 and my action 4. So yes, it is a leap of faith but I feel it is totally possible. And if you want to add extra shallow dpeth of field to the image, you can use a depth map in davinci resolve and then a lens blue node and you can cheat the look. If you do that, for best results I recommend to zoom in all the way as the look of the person's face changes due to lens distortion at 20mm and it doesn't look natural. At zoomed in 40mm looks more like a traditional lens would look like. I hope it makes sense...Let me know otherwise...
thanks Very helpful! I have an iphone 13pro and Osmo 6 mobile with the dji mics- and i just get tired of having to take my phone out of its case so the darn dji mic transmitter can plug to the phone,,, then i have to mess with the phone clamp... and then after my iphone i have to connect w a cable to my pc and transfer.. where the Osmo pocket has the sd card to xfer.. so the Osmo pocket seems to make all this less cumbersome.. still its great to know that the images i get on my current setup are still great... tough call! thanks again for the info -
Cellphone quality is superior to what you can achieve with D Log on the Osmo Pocket 3. Especially when using Motioncam to shoot 4K DNG RAW video. Shoots even better video footage than a Lumix GH6.
Thank you. It's a great video. I use a #DJIRonin to shoot at events like Paris Fashion Week. In the crowd and the hassle, it's always so complex to get a Gimbal out, balance it, and set up 2 cameras, one for stills and one on Gimbal for videos. I am tempted to go for Osmo 3, but I am stopping short because the quality of Osmo Pocket one was not so professional. Family use? Yes. Vlogging.. maybe. Any suggestions?
The P3 is far more advanced than the P1 original. I think you would be surprised. Plus the form factor means you can het going in 2 seconds and be very covert, to the point that modt people wouldn’t ever realise there is a camera filming, which will help with acting natural. If you were in London, I would let you use it and make a decision. Send me a private message and maybe we can work something out. I am planning a trip to Paris on April, if that helps. Maybe we can do something together and you can test the kit out, if that is not too far for you into the future!
Both really good. Thr M6 has an infinitely better and bigger range of vertical adjustment when the AI tracker is engage to reduce headroom. That to me is a mega plus. The P3 is super quick and discreet, that is a huge plus. Hard to say which one is better than the other on everything because each one allows you to do something the other can’t…
@@SamuelSotiega all is clear, but i feel like your examples of smartphones you consider for the situation in which you already have a phone and you can just buy a gimbal and some accessories (so cheaper than investing in a pocket 3) are a bit high-end... which my current one is not : D so that's why i'm curious and a bit on the fence and asking: because i do not have the budget for a truly good phone, an s23, s24, google pixel 7 or an iphone 14 or15 right now are way outside of my budget, so that's why the 470 USD pricepoint I have found for the base Pocket 3 right now is appealing to me so... what do you say? : )
Pocket 3 has a very small zoom whereas my iphone 14 pro max has a much bigger zoom which I use to create some cool special effects. That's why I have chosen to use my iphone 14 pro max with Osmo mobile 6, it's a lot cheaper option with better results. Besides the big screen of my iphone is much more visible than pcoket 3's tiny screen and with Osmo mobile 6, I can switch to vertical shooting with a click of a button.
I am really happy to hear you got your workflow and gear worked out and are happy. I agree with you, unless you need the P3 for what it is designed for, stick to what you have that already works for you. Cheers!
@@AStCG1989 Well, yeah, in that regard, I agree with you, you are best to stick to the fixed focal lengths. If we go into that level of quality, you are 100%, but sometimes zooming/ cropping in for 10-15% is still okay, not perfect, and ideally, you'd want that done with an actual zoom, but things are the way they are.... But like I said in the video, each setup has its strengths and weaknesses, and it is down to each person to learn and decide what they are comfortable with, all use all 3 depending on the situation and so on....
Followed your advice on the hohem m6 for the iPhone and love the gimble. I have one question regarding microphones, I’m not a vlogger and don’t talk during my videos, do I need an external mic? Like a Dji mic?
If you want to record good audio when anyone talks to your camera, if you ever do that, then yes. If you don’t plan to have anyone talking to camera, and all you want is ambient audio, i would recommend a small rode micro or any type of small “smartphone” mic and you can then plug it to the phone. The M6 will most likely be able to handle the fact the phone will stick out slightly. Let me know how you plan to record audio and I can give you a more specific answer.
@@SamuelSotiega thanks man, yes I like recording ambient sounds in cities, hiking and overall scenery with no commentary. Would you recommend the rode videomic me
How is Hohem mt2 after all these months of usage. I heard a lot of people are having horizon leveling issue with this gimbal and some of them just stopped working.
To me, it works great. My last video was shot using the AI sensor it still works like day 1. It’s not perfect and I hope when they release follow up versions they will make the necessary improvements, but for me, so far so good…
Question, I just bought a Scorp 2 mini gimbal kit with AI tracking for $280 and the Rode wireless Pro for my iphone pro max...awsome set up but so huge and time to set up. Do you think the pocket 3 is a better choice from that set up I have for content creation? I do not own a camera at the moment. I can still return gimbal and Rode mic. Thanks in advance.
Yes, massive difference. The pocket 3 will be 2 seconds and you are good to go. No mounting camera, balancing, etc. You flick the screen and the gimbal and camera are good to go. If you want simplicity, the Pocket 3 is hard to beat, in my opinion. And the quality is good too. It is not going to be as good as a dedicated camera and lens that might cost 2-5K, but for most people and situations, it is more than enough. I use the pocket 3 now for vlogging, no other camera. The quality is just so good. I am soon doing a Pocket 3 vs high-end camera video where you will see more samples, but like I said earlier, if simplicity and speed in what you are after, get the Pocket 3, it is unbeatable.
HI, I have been reading a lot of mechanical issues with the Hohem M6, especially th neon lockable motors. I've been trying to decide between the DJI, Insta360 and the Hohem M6. I'm mainly using for hiking B-Roll and travel vlogging... and videoing dance instruction. I really need active tracking... I have a GoPro 12 as well. Can you use any of these gimbals with my GoPro? I currently have a iPhone 15 Pro Max... Do you have a recommendation? Thanks!
Thanks for chipping in. If I could say something to you, I would advice you to wait until June 27. That's all I can say at the moment. Can you wait till then? One question, do you use accessories like lenses and filters, or just the phone?
@@ashvims i can’t say anything else (i already said too much) but you read in between the lines… May I ask, do you use many accessories or mostly just the iPhone on its own?
My phones are always the lowest possible denometer in all that i own and never a reliable option for any heavy lifting. I'd rather rock a free phone and buy a lens than pay over a thousand for the latest iPhone. Never met an iPhone without a cracked screen.
The pocket 3 is really good!! Very good indeed, but for what it is and for what it is designed for. Just as you wouldn’t use a Ferrari for farming, it doesn’t mean the Ferrari is bad, just that for farming, a tractor is better suited.
