Don't bother. Yes it's a nice luxury as many people say. But the end one is such a tight make.... its hard to beat. External antenna, better controls, premium feel. Dji RC feels like they cheaped out in a big way just to get a screen built in If your phone sucks then yes go with the RC. however if you have a kick ass phone then stick with the N1
My guess is that if you switch the RC on first before opening the arms of the drone and turning it on then the extra time for the RC to load doesn't matter
When I bought my Mini 3 pro, I went with the NC1 because it seemed the best option regardless of any price difference. I always have my phone with me and can't use the phone for calls when flying anyway. I could see the RC had more reviews so it seemed to be the preferred option but didn't make sense to me since my phone can record the screen at higher resolution and has a faster processor. For people without a decent mobile phone, the RC controller is a winner but that has to be the minority of fliers. This video confirms the NC1 was the right one for me.
Bingo ! I’m fully aware that not being a “fanboy” holds me back because people want to hear how amazing their new purchase is or want validation on what they want to buy and on this channel I go against the grain at times and tell it how I see it. It’s nice many people have agreed with my findings ! Appreciate the comment thank you
@@GAVINHR It really doesn't matter what any of us owners think, we made our choices already. Your video and these comments will allow a more informed choice for new buyers. Both controllers have merit, it's great that DJI gave us the choice. Also have to say this, loving your channel. 💯👌
Great video. Currently have RC-N1 and Mini3. Looking to upgrade to a 3 Pro with the RC but since I have a IPhone 14 Pro Max i decided to just upgrade the drone and keep the RC-N1. Being faster has no benefits to me as I have never had to worry about time when traveling. Also the controller takes a lot less space and don’t have to worry about breaking the screen. Also the iPhone 14 pro max screen is way brighter.
Interesting test, I'm not really surprised. But if you turned the DJI RC on first, than the drone, in most cases you would have your FPV camera feed before the drone locked the homepoint for take off. Each controller has it's advantages and disadvantages, and everyone has different needs. I mostly use the DJI RC, because it frees my phone up to other things, such as record some B-roll on the ground as I'm flying. And not get interrupted by calls, messages and alerts while I'm flying. Thanks for sharing.
I always luv your videos. thank you! I live in LA and for me it's all about my iPhone screen dimming so as to not overheat in direct sunlight so I rather a screen that isn't as bright but doesn't dim.
I did not know i needed this information, but, lack of BS and straight forward to what's promised is SO F...G rare on YT these days, its a massive LIKE )))
Great video! I like both controllers. However, I hate always having to remove my phone from its case, connecting the cable, and then opening the fly app. All of which i believe would be more than 29 seconds. I keep the dji rc connected to my Air 2s and use the N1 with my mini 2.
One of the other things to mention , instead of using a mobile phone I prefer to use a 12 inch tablet with a Sim card in it, gives you the same functionality as the mobile phone but with a much larger screen, you also benefit with no system lag like you do with a smart controller .... 👍👍
Good job as always Gav. Myself I have both of course and I tend to like the N1 better with my phone or I-Pad. With the DJI RC I must have that shade on first of all. With the other not so much. Time to get to flying really doesn't matter to me because I first go up and orbit to get my camera setting right with what filter and etc. Takes time. Also Gav I've got 2 Dial filters (1-5 and 6 - 9) which cuts down on changing filter time. Some time I just use the regular filters. So you see I have things to do first. I know you understand this. Thank you as always for being here for us
Of course ! And thank you for the detailed reply ! Getting up in the air isn’t the most important thing but it’s more those that say the RC is more convenient and faster - but from my experience as people carry a phone with them anyway it just makes sense to use the N1
One of the reasons I sold my drone, a Dji mini 2 was having to use my phone. It was a pain taking the phone out of its case, plugging it in to the remote then putting it back in its case when done. Tieing up my phone whilst it was in use and depleting my battery too. Not for me thanks, I may be a dinosaur but my phone is for making phone calls and sending the odd text, it's not there to be full of apps.
One big reason I like the RC better is because I fly my drone when hiking in remote areas (that don't typically have cell service). On more than one occasion, I've been unable to fly because the port on my phone thinks it has moisture in it, so I can't plug into the controller. With the RC, I don't have that issue - ever. Just one more perspective.....
I don’t understand, you can’t fly the drone with no cell service? Or is there some functionality that the rc gives you that cellphone without cell service doesn’t?
@@jerryg3652 You can fly without cell service unless there is some required update that you didn't do. I've also had occasions where I didn't fly for a while, went out to fly and it wouldn't fly due to some required update (I should have checked while I still had service). That isn't really a consideration for the RC controller since it would have the same issue. My biggest issue was with the moisture detection (and sometimes I had no idea how it thought it was wet).
@@ITech2005 Absolutely - but the end result is the same - I was unable to fly in those circumstances and I no longer have that issue with the RC controller.
Nice comparison, thanks for doing this Gavin. I like using both: the RC for vid/photos in a compact package and the RC-N1 for geospatial modelling and using third-party apps such as DroneLink. One add-on comment/question would also be how quickly they each lock onto satellites? Might be worth doing a quick outdoor side-by-side comparison to see if there are any diferences in the flying field. Keep it up and keep em coming!
I was thinking about getting RC controller, but after watching your video I am gona buy RCN1 and use that money to get 2TB ssd instead. Thanks for the video!!!!!
Both controllers are great the 1 advantage i like with the rm330 is pan and zooming at the same time while the rcn1 is much more versatile for certain circumstances
I have the Mavic 3 with the RC N1 and the Tripltek 8 pro. I love the larger brighter screen and not ready to jump into the new RC's. Thanks for the comparison!
This is such a basic concept of a video but I'm glad you actually did it Everyone always said "DJI RC is a faster set up" well this video proves them wrong. rc n1 all the way
It only took me 10 months or so to make this. I have no idea why people think it’s a faster set up, I’m not knocking the controller it’s a good bit of kit but it takes a while to boot up and as shown is placing a phone in s holder and plugging in a simple cable that much of a chore for all the benefits it brings? Most modern mobile phones cost 1000+ they are superior in every way to a £255 android controller
@@GAVINHR people are lazy as all hell... everyone carries a phone and many have brighter screens and better nits and custom software and all that jazz 100%with you man its great to see how quick RC N1 really is
haha! good man, Gavin! You have challenged an over-arching opinion! A choice between controllers still has many sides to it... I'm an N1 man myself and I'm anyways clove to, using it with both the M2 and M3, a tablet, and Litchi. Not quick but then "haste" maybe shouldn't be common a requisite with aircraft anyways?
Thank you, exactly my point, I simply cannot understand those that claim that the RC controller is quicker - like in any stretch! obviously this video was just to basically prove a point that surely the benefits of live maps, updates, and all the rest surely outway the tiny amount of effort it takes to open a phone holder and plug a cable in? I often like to challenge the narrative just to give a different perspective than the usual fan boys that tell you everything is brilliant. Totally agree, this should be a careful operation and haste has no place really! I appreciate your comment and watching!
What I really want to know is how people feel about the sticks on each controller. Which one has the better feel, and ease of flight corrections? I'm not sure why people are so obsessed with 5 - 10 or 15 seconds here or there. Pick the controller you like best and go with it. I'm sure the younger crown likes the RC, but to us older guys, the N1 appeals to our "simple is better" mantra. To each their own.
Interesting test, Gavin. Thanks for sharing the result. I use both controllers in different situations and would not want to give up either one. Cheers from Wisconsin, U.S.A.
Had another issue with fancy schmancy controller: have a very difficult time connecting to my mobile hotspot on scene of a job site in restricted airspace, and therefore couldn’t “unlock” the airspace. I also noticed a “lag” when changing directions with the drone. What’s on the RC2 controller’s display is slightly behind what is actually going on in the air. Not good… Definitely more trouble than it’s worth. I’m going back to the old school controller for sure. Thanks for the video…
Would I be able to use this dji-rc to power a surface vehicle. Electronic speed controller and servos? How many channels is this radio? I’m trying to make a nice Fpv rc car to drive around in clear vision. Please help. I’m okay with leaving a super chat or whatever for any help! 🆘
Thanks! Exactly the issues I was looking for an answer to. Made my mind up to which controller to get. Shame O3 and O4 transmission types are incompatible 😢
I had the original Mavic mini and it was such a pain to get it up in the air,it wasnt as quick as the newer style of remote. But now having a rc controller and a Mini 3 pro and Rc controller its been so much nicer not to fiddle with wires and app. I live in Florida and screen is more then bright enough.Another issue was my phone would overheat trying to fly drone back then and i dont see that being an issue now.
I have both. And actually want both for different reasons. 15 sec, even a minute, is not enough of a difference for me to say one is better. But a nice try and a good comparison.
Interesting and nice video. Really thank you. But the truth is, that one of my friends, had a difficult situation with the standard controller. As he was flying, the application crashed with no reason. Fortunately the drone did not go very far and reconnected. But a lot of capture unique moments, never taken. So i would not like, to be dependent on an application. Personally, for that reason alone, I prefer RC.
Hey that’s absolutely fine ! Nothing wrong with the RC it’s still a great piece of kit, it has itself been known to crash when it first launched just like the DJI fly app did on a phone a year or so ago but right now I have to say both seem to work well
I was going to go with the RC2 controller. But I think using the other controller with my phone is going to be a lot better. My phone is A LOT more powerful, has a better screen then the RC2 controller.
I’m quite careful with my equipment and never really dropped it to be able to test the theory but it’s pretty solid, I do have a screen protector on mine yep just to be safe. Skyreat do one cheap enough :)
RC N1 everytime for me, use it with a quality phone that has a high screen rating in nits and it is far better display than the RC which just isn't bright enough if you ask me.
I’m comparing the controllers and uses based on flexibility - not people’s poor choice in phone because their manufacturer designed a substandard product. Why should I give a full list of phones that overheat? What if the manufacturer releases an update that stops it? Then renders the video pointless doesn’t it? In general it was only iPhones that overheated and there were ways to prevent it.
but what happens on the phone when a call comes in - default android behavior is to remove all fokus fron g the running app... i havnt tried it my self so i really dont know - but since the regulation in EU states that NOTHING must be able to interfere with controlling the drone would you not need to put the phone in flymode to avoid any disturbence off your flight ?
Mostly all modern phones have gaming mode or gaming hub booster or anything like that, where calls or any kind of interferences are ignored by phone and it does not show on screen just keeps a notification in background (ofcourse you may have to configure that behavior in some devices) but as soon as you specify DJI app as gaming app , your issue will get solved
Even then, most people have a mobile phone with them anyway don’t they? I mean I’ll always support my viewers choice on controller and provide support but I agree with the fact using a phone is better in pretty much every way
Similar test on you tube but Mini3 Pro vs Mini2, looks like Mni 3 connection via phone is quicker then the 2. But in an ideal world with the RC its press on off it goes with the N1 its not always that smooth in fact not! more than often, i.e. drop the phone, cable doesn't connect to the phone correctly, the app doesn't launch. In my view the RC is a more reliable quick setup.
I prefer the DJI RC over the DJI RC N1, 13 seconds longer is not significant to me, what I like is the convenience of just pressing a button rather than having to plug in a phone, and while flying our phones are free to use for other things, in my opinion it's not a matter of which one faster, whichever should be easier to use.
I have the RC-n1, and don’t have any problems tbh. The only reason why I would get the other one is I can fly the drone further away and it stays connected
I just returned the RC after two days. The signal strength is weaker than the N1. I’ve found a way to keep my iPhone highest brightness level on for a long time.
I think mobile phones are faster due to their hardware inside, cpu, ram etc Rc Pro can't compare in that regard.. Pulling that phone holder/antenna out and plugging it in really isn't a big deal, nor does it take long.
Isn't another advantage to the RC-N1 the fact that it gets better flight range than the RC? According to some youtube reviews/tests that I have watched, that seems to be the case anyway.
On that one I’d have to say different - just my personal findings and I did publish a video on it but I found no difference in range between the rcn1 and the screen controller, I believe the poorer range on the mini 3 is down to the antenna placement more than the controller. I would obviously never discredit others results however
Never really been a fan of the DJI RC - its just so sluggish in use, seems massively underpowered, and not even close to the (overpriced, but excellent) DJI RC Pro that I tend to use exclusively on the Mavic 3. On the upside, as an iPhone user, at least the screen doesn't dim when things warm up. I do tend to use the DJI RC with my Mini 3 Pro though.
I've sold all my drones now apart from the mini 3 Pro because of all the stupid regulations in the uk but I am looking to buy another nc r controller because where I live now near a military base and close to an airport I've always got to connect to my phone and hotspot it so as I can get all the clearance which is so bloody annoying with the rc. But the rc n1 still make quite a bit of money on ebay lol 😁👍👌 🇬🇧
Oh really! Well you kept a great drone my friend ! Agree completely, have you not thought of exploring the autel? No geofence on that one and may make your life a bit easier ?
A modern iPhone is brighter than what the DJI RC is, the overheating problem is one aspect but worldwide this is an apple issue on certain devices whereas android devices which don’t have the issue have around a 75% market share worldwide, for those with overheating issues it makes sense but there’s a bitter taste in my mouth for users that have to buy additional equipment because of a flaw you can’t override on the iPhone
In a real life situation or action situation where your climbing a mountain , riding a bike or on a hike etc it would actually be alot fasted as you'd have to locate both phone and controller then assemble both on the move without an ideal surface to place them on , cause let's be honest , nobody is flying a drone from their kitchen table or office desk
hi I would just like some advice about my dji mavic mini 1 the camera gimble keeps shaking and gimble wheel does not work so can't do videos or pictures. Could you know the reason please. Paul
Hi again I tried what you suggested about calibrate imu on my mavi mini. It did not work. When you put the drone to your ear you can here like a rumbling sound have you ever herd anyone say this before. Really buging me . Thanks Paul.
The question is, if the N2 & RC2 controllers to be released along AIR 3 will bring O4 transmission making all of the above obsolete (including RC Pro) -thoughts?
Lets end the argument now. The RC-N1 has one major drawback, DJI has a list of phones that are compatible with the controller. My Pixel 6 Pro was on it when I got the drone and controller. That changed this month and one day I had could fly and the next day I had a white screen. The list now has only one Pixel phone and that is the Pixel 8 Pro. A new (used) DJI RC is enroute.
new rc is faster as you press on then unfold drone gimbal cover off its then ready you cant unfold the drone and fiddle with cables and phones at same time ,however theres not much difference over all but the new controller is worth the extra for clarity and extra dial and function buttons if you can stretch to it get it .
Hi there long time no see! Sadly it’s not possible to do that test reliably and fairly, ami did write this in another comment but when the drone acquires the sat lock they are cached on the drone therefore if you switch battery or turn the drone off you will see you get sat lock straight away, for example on this test I did the RC first, it got a full sat lock and updated home point message even indoors. However when I repeated it with the RCN1 moments later if you look at the still it already had sat lock because it had already saved them in short to test it fairly they would have to be done in different locations with time between so any results wouldn’t be representative.
That's one of the most annoying things about the DJI RC with the screen I really do like the screen it really makes it more versatile because you don't need to use your phone but one of the most annoying things is just the boot up time but we will still get the RC controller with screen do you do have enough Wi-Fi connections or else you'll be broken 😫👈
While this test shows te RC-N1 is faster to the camera on, can you do a real life test of actually getting the drone to take off? My RC-N1 with an Androind phone takes longer than 16s to get into the air, maybe because i wait for good sat count before flying.
Unfortunately that is a nearly impossible test to do fairly - here’s why, each time the drone establishes its gps location in a new area it will take some time to establish the satellite’s however when you switch controller the location is still stored on the drone which is why the sat lock will come quickly if you power things down and restart. This is why if you look closely to r rcn1 controller already had full sats straight away
I've got both but the RC is better for me as my phone is very poor for how bright I can get the screen. So have problems seeing it on a bright sunny day.
