Do you need usb cable connecting camera to gimbal to have this function active? I have canon m50 and ronin gives a message to connect cable that’s why I haven’t yet tried.
Great video. Do you wear the rode go on your body? I also see the dead cat on your hand held with the jobi - why do you need sound on that one if you already have the rode go already?
I switch between depending on what I’m doing and how close or far from the camera I am going to be. It also changes based on how much wind is happening on location.
4:58 So I’m a little confused about what happens when you hit the home button. Does it keep tracking even when the Ronin app is in the background? If that’s true, can you set up active track and then switch your phone to a camera app (Moment, Filmic Pro, etc.) and start recording and it keeps tracking? This would be super useful to get a different angle of the same tracking sequence. Has anyone tried using a smartphone as the main camera with this gimbal? I can think of a few times that would be really useful for my workflow. Specifically when I need good audio for a lightweight, mobile shot. I would consider mounting my mixpre3, my phone, and a microphone (still well under the 2kg max payload) and then I wouldn’t need a bag or anything. Totally self-contained lightweight gimbal. Not something I need that often, but when I need it it would be awesome. Thoughts on a setup like that, anyone? And does anyone know if the phone can record while tracking?
Oh, hell yes. I recently purchased a Ronin SC and wondered if it was possible to Active Track myself with the gimbal mounted on a tripod. Using the trigger to lock on/off is so convenient and easy! In vlogging mode it basically works like an oversized (and higher quality) Osmo Pocket.
Awesome glad it helps!! I’m working on another one showing how to use tracking (not active track) to do sort of the same thing. That video will be coming soon
You are a lifesaver.. I got the Ronin s c for this main feature. But my problem was trying to get it to track myself. While standing in front of the camera having to Guess where I was in the frame. Most of the time it didn't pan out so well. Thanks for this.
Nailed it. 😍You told me exactly what I needed to hear today. You just got a new subscriber. 😀I enjoy your content and delivery. My Ronin SC confuses me so much - as a solo creator, I want to add so many things to my gimbal setup. 😢
Hi Jake - I have a $1ML question for you: Do you shoot in 4K 60fps or 24fps? I like the quality of your video and try to replicate it with my Lumix G9. Thanks
I was trying to find active tracking videos for mirrorless setup. Great video and thanks for sharing your knowledge! I have now a feeling that this is going to be expensive for me ;)
Ive noticed sometimes its difficult to keep things in frame because the vertical distance between the camera lens and the phone lens is fairly significant. so if something is in frame in the phone it sometimes falls out of frame or out of center in the camera. But the wider angle lenses definitely make this less noticeable. Pretty awesome setup by Ronin though.
Thumbs up mate - I sussed it all very quickly after watching this, It would be great if Ronin app did a facetrack, where you could pre program the face which needs to be followed - this would be better for self creators.
I LOVE ❤️ that transition at 3:21 oh man you've given me like a super WHOA when I saw that! Great video in general dude! I usually film other people but due to the current restrictions I want to make more videos filming myself so I will try ActiveTrack this weekend and see how it works!
Thanks for the video. Do you have a problem with the till movement? Because I just purchased a ronin sc and using it with a7iii + 28-70 and my camera always falls when I do till movement. And the whole construction looks fragile and unstable
Hi Bud, I tried my darndest to set the SC up to do Active Track and finally conceded defeat. The phone mount supplied with the Ronin SC seems to be a beast for some reason and is just too heavy in addition to the Sony a6400 plus a smart phone and a lens with any glass. The tilt axis just couldn't do it, and if it would have made it, the usable range would have been too limiting for my taste. Little disappointed but I returned the SC and got the S, and yes it is bigger, but I had no problem balancing and using the feature (and the app is the same so your tutorial was still useful!). This thing is a beast and I can't put it down, even though the SC does have some features that the S doesn't have including a bunch of accessories that I had to purchase separate. Anyway, just my 2 cents!
Interesting but you are right. Either way it makes the range pretty limited due to the size and weight. I’ll be curious to see how DJI addresses this in the next generation of ronin gimbals. I’m sure we will find out in a few weeks. Cheers man!!
which way are you having difficulty balancing? I know for me I can't get the tilt axis balanced very well with the phone on top just because the load is so weird. I lower it to where the center of gravity is on the low side but it is balanced as best I can from front to back. I hope that helps!
Jake Sloan hi Jake. Thanks so much for the reply. I'll try your way and c where we end up. There got to be a sweet spot there somewhere Thanks for the advice it really appreciated. I really enjoy your channel's great and helpful content. Thanks again.
I saw your video and bought an SC. Im finding it very difficult to balance the gimbal with the phone on top. Normal camera balancing on it im able to do quite easily.
It is especially with the phone on top. I usually can get everything balanced but the tilt axis I have to just get as close as possible and let it run that way
Hey, I've just got the Ronin SC! I'm so so confused I just cannot balance the camera with the phone ontop! I've tried it with my Sony rx100 in a cage, with and without the raiser, I've also tried it with my old Nikon d5000 which is within the weight limit and neither will balance!!! Both mean I have to lower the tilt axis so far it bangs the back of the gimabl meaning I can tilt hardly at all! And the app keeps saying the tilt axis is not balanced even when it is but hits the back like I've said!! Ah so annoying.
I have found the tilt axis to be very difficult to balance when the phone is on top as well. To start with make sure you have a camera that is heavier than the phone on the bottom otherwise it will be almost impossible to balance. The next trick is to balance it as close as you can but it might likely still be a bit bottom heavy so the tilt axis will still fall to where camera is sitting level but it should still work since for tracking you usually don't use a ton of tilt movement. I hope that helps and makes sense!!
JAKE HELP 😰.. i don’t know why but my Ronin Sc’s Active Track is messed up. whenever i am trying yo track , the camera is going haywire and upside doing a rotation kind of thing , donknow why it’s happening 🤷♂️
I just got the Ronin rs2 with the gh5 and when I use active track it is manual focus? The DJI app doesn't change focus auto? I thought it was at first.
I find it difficult to get my gimbal balanced with phone on top of camera, then I read that someone puts the phone off the camera and on one of the side attachment points. Have you tried this? I did make one attempt but the gimbal went off on it's own and couldn't find the tracked object. However, it was an object not a person.
Hey Jake, thanks for the in-depth video...really helped. What are your thoughts about autofocus settings when using gimbal and going in and out of near/far subjects. I'm using GH5, which isn't the best at that, but would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!!
I did a video showing step by step how to balance the ronin sc here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r9XczVp02gA.html the key with the phone on top is you really won’t get the tilt axis to balance. It typically just has to go as low as it will go
No DJI reviewers on youtube pushed DJI to allow us to choose front camera for tracking yet, what a stupidity of humanity. I have better solution for active tracking than DJI's LIDAR shi!t.
OK, this video is 4 YEARS OLD. DJI's LIDAR stuff didn't exist yet. I bought this myself and did this video to help people. There are reasons they didn't allow the front camera or couldn't.
Yes unfortunately, however you can set the tilt of the camera with it set so that the eye piece just barely misses and the gimbal will still work well even though it isn’t perfectly balanced. The other option is to remove the eye piece or use a plate made by small rig to add some weights to the back of the camera
Great hack you made my day!!! Have you tried, how long you can track? I want to track my lectures 60-90 min with Sony A6600. (Maybe with the Sony remote control to zoom) I tried it before with DJY Osmo and iPhoneX, but after 15 minutes or so the iPhone was to hot and quit, thanks
I haven't tried that long and battery life might be an issue with the phone. You could probably plug in a usb power bank though and when you do it besure and dim the phone screen as much as possible. that is where a lot of the heat issues come from.
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake, for the screen tip, I already went to 30 instead of 60 frames, and reduced the resolution, but I already ordered the A6600 and RoninSC ;-))
Great video, , didactically perfect, thank you! If I frame a distant object, say 200 metres away, zoom in to bring it close, can I follow it with tracking or does the gimbal software have a physical (not zoom) limit?
Does the app not allow using the front facing camera? Seems like it would be so much easier to set up and monitor when using solo if it would use the front facing camera
What is a cheap DSLR gimbal which u can track with? I rent the weebill S before for 1 month and it was a good gimbal but idk if u can track with it. The DJI Ronin seems like a good gimbal too but what would i need to track with it, only this transmitter? Greetings from germany
4:27 Nope sry but its not. It would be amazing, if it could track you in a huge crowd of humans rushing by and with a multi colored background... You are in front of a big "GreenScreen" and only 15 feet away... thats not really amazing to me...
So, I'm interested in using active tracking to film solo dance videos, camera mounted on tripod. I'd like to track the subject at full length with their whole body in the frame. This would allow the dancers movements to dictate where the shot is. My worry is the Ronin seems to put subjects in the centre of the (phone) frame. This might chop off feet/lower body. Can you offset the camera angle compared to the phone angle or should I just shoot from a bit further back and crop in post? Any ideas if the active tracking would be useful in my intended scenario? Thanks!
Actually it could be! Once the Ronin SC is tracking you can use the joystick to move the camera around and frame your subject the way you want (whole body) and from then on the Ronin SC and your phone will try and keep the subject framed that way!
@@JakeSloan Thanks for the reply Jake! That sounds promising. So one tracks a subject then you can fine tune the camera position with the joystick afterwards? Cool!
This is probably a dumb question but can you not mount the phone facing the other way and use the selfie camera to do the tracking, meaning you'd be able to see the phone screen to know it's set up correctly? Or are the selfie cameras not of high enough quality to do that?
My gimble shakes violently because it's so top heavy with my phone, so it's not going to work for me it looks like no one is mentioning this in all of their videos
I have the Ronin SC and have been struggling with it. The biggest issue is using the mount and a phone. I have successfully balanced it without the phone and mount. I assume the correct way is to have the phone and the mount on the camera and then balance it. The problem I think is the constant rebalancing as the weight will be different when I want to use it without the phone mounted. I did try with some luck by locking one of the motors, but I don't think the Ronin liked it. Any suggestions?
Yes if you want to use it with active track you need to balance it with the phone on top of the camera. If you want to use it without the phone (not using active track) you will need to balance it that way (without the phone) basically any time you change the setup a lot weight wise you will need to rebalance the gimbal.
@@JakeSloan sounds good. The biggest frustration came with learning how to balance it. Now knowing how to do so, it should be pretty straight ahead. Thanks for the great videos and your help!
I have a video showing how to balance releasing Wednesday. It’s def a learning curve but it gets easier!!! Hang in there and soon it will be second nature
@@JakeSloan GH series are actually there in compatibility list on their website. I was wondering more about if the added weight of Metabones along with camera and 50mm 1.4 supports or not.
There's an old fisherman called RodAngles on RU-vid and he has all what you can do plus zooming in. How does he do it? I would love to find out if you know. Great video btw.
@@JakeSloan yes...his fishing channel is called RodsAngleUK...all his videos uses auto gimbals...Im sure he's not got someone operating it because the camera's is sometimes over water, and no wife or friend is going to stand in water for hours. Also he doesn't wear any wirst bands for infrared. Also his AI is smart enough to pan out when he picks his rod up and captures his whole fishing rod and him, so it's better than face recognition. That band around his wrist is a leather thing that goes over his finger to protect it when casting his rod.
Hi Jake. I have the canon eos M50 and I’ve been trying to use the follow feature with my phone. When I try and balance the camera it is moved into a position that bends the cable that is connected to the camera. Any ideas on this? Do I need to buy a different cable? Thank you.
This would be killer, and all by itself, would convince me to buy the Ronin SC immediately. I use a DJI Osmo Pocket this way, and it’s great, but the quality isn’t as good as my EOS R, plus you can’t use the Osmo Pocket’s wireless adaptor (to allow me to lasso myself on my phone whilst in the field) and a wireless mic at the same time.
Can't seem to get the camera to balance with addition of the phone holder and iPhone xs to use active track successfully. Any suggestions? Using the A7iii, 28mm f2 lens and small rig cage.
When I balance the tilt with the A7iii and the phone I only balance it so that it doesn't tilt forward or backward. It has to be so far down that it is really difficult to get the tilt to where it will not be top heavy but that is ok since it doesn't need to tilt much in active track mode. Maybe I can do a video on this soon
Thanks a lot for the great video, quick question, when phone is mounted, the tilt axis is very low, so it hits the back part around pan axis. When using the mobile to check how well is your balance,, it shows tilt axis not balanced, is that normal? We don't use that option while doing phone mount and just do motor calibration?
This setting is why I sold my Feiyu AK2000, which was fine but as a solo creator, active track is a game changer. I hope DJI continues to improve this feature and eliminates the random pauses I noticed as you were walking, it kinda thought you were getting ready to stop but then it kept going. Watched all three videos before setting up my Ronin.
@@JakeSloan ya the feiyu had that feature I use to use it for various shots very smooth. For self record, while smooth, that brings it's own set of challenges such as planning the timing and framing of where you're going to be. I think with active track it'll be a matter of being decisive and smooth with movement so as to not confuse DJI. I'm sure good shots can be accomplished 10x easier than with non active track, similar to DJI drones which act in the same way. Can't wait to give it a try!
You'll want to have the phone connect to your camera wifi and use the app that your camera manufacturer has made to do live view remote. Sony has one they made for their cameras
Just found you Great Video Jake One thing I wish DJI would come up with... I wish DJI would make a Mini touch screen for the tracking that I could connect to my phone because my Samsung Note 9 is a giant phone and so hard to balance on the ronin-SC but also so I could see the box I set for tracking myself Best regards, rick
That would be fantastic. The other way around it is to use tracking (not active track) and pre program everything but that requires a fair bit of work on the timing of everything.
PS! The trigger doesn't work for Fujifilm cameras (yet). For some reason, it only can trigger photos. I think Sony and Canon cameras still get more support in these kind of things from other companies.
@@JakeSloan shot in the dark, but have you seen any one use this to track someone doing sports? I'm a kiteboarder, and want to film myself... but can't find anyone using a gimbal to film something thats a bit more high action. Great video by the way, watched a bunch and yours was the most helpful.
HELP have a Problems it does not work my camera sony A7iii 28-70mm f3,5 and Iphone 7 wear too heavy disorders tilt motor gimbal weakness . ???? !!!!!!!
This is incredible. I just watched a video from another guy who basically hated it because DJI uses a cellphone to track the object, but the alternatives were not as smooth or convenient as this gimbal. Thanks for the class!
Just ordered the Ronin-SC. Thanks for all the great tips! I'm following you, not just because of the good content with the SC, but mostly because you said Camera-Person! ❤
Quick question. I just got this gimbal literally four hours ago and I'm watching a series of videos. By the way this is one of the best ones. So I've seen a few videos where people melt their phones on top. I get that part but my question is why do you not flip the Cell phone around so you can see yourself?
