I know you're not a fan of the Redline Rival, but at $185 now a year later after publishing this video, that ought to give it some points, right? Thinking about this and the Asset for casual riding with my son. No intention to get serious nor competitive. Just better to ride than sit around on my phone or take videos of him. Thoughts? Yes, I've watched your
The sizes of these two bikes is a huge oversight on your part and is not an equal comparison as the DK Cygnus has a top tube length of 20.5" while the Redline Rival is only 19". The Redline Rival is geared more towards the smaller sized beginner that's just transitioning from their 16 - 18" bike. Please find a bike with chromoly and a 19" top tube and then compare it to the Rival as that would be a more worthy comparison and sought after value.
I got a 2020 redline mosh and a 2010 dk cygnus. The redline is 20.4 and the cygnus is 20.25. the cygnus is a much better bike still. The redlines 3 piece cranks are not even bolted to the sprocket, and it has an american style bottom bracket. If I could hand you the stem from the redline you'd know what I mean.
Don’t stress too much. He’s small so the quality won’t be an issue until he starts progressing. My first bike that I learned on was a Walmart bike worse than the rival. It’s just not the best bang for your Buck.
No worries you made the right choice the red line frame is warrantied for five years compared to the dek at 12 months and only if assembled by a bike Technic
These are both freestyle bikes, not race. The Rival is specifically for younger riders transitioning to larger bikes and not racing. The frames weigh the same yet the RL is inferior for lack of chromium in the blend? So whats in the rivals blend then and how does it stress test comparitvly in freestyle? How about the cranks, sprockets, stems, clamps, bearings etc? The RL-20 basically defined the freestyle category in the 80s and RL started in 1970 making offroad motorcycle racing frames for flat track and mx, then entered bmx with the squareback frame. Core brand, color options...more suited toward purse comparisons imo. Points for subjective critera is simply a popularity contest, as all your points were but the frame and bars and there was no detail on steel compisition, no testing or real world examples either of that one.
In the last month I picked up a 2020 redline mosh. It's got rust it rattles. Then a 2010 dk cygnus which is solid and fast. Granted one was cared for worse it proves your point when I feel the two in hand. The grips on the cygnus are at least both there still. Also the redline has an american BB and the three piece cranks are not bolted to the sprocket either. Both have only 10mm front axles. Redline is only a winner in being a better size for me at 20.4 vs the cygnus at 20.25. Redline was $25 dk was $55 but I gave him $60.
