+Marius Urucu I disagree with that. There's plenty of self-awareness in DmC. The intro with Dante getting dressed in mid-air, and the "fuck you" scenes are both tongue in cheek. But like DMC4, the tone is wildly inconsistent and the story gets stuck too far up its own ass.

+Potidaon You're right. DmC has some self-awareness in the beginning, just in a more mean-spirited way (that wig joke is probably the best example). While the older games were cheesy for the most part, they knew when to raise the stakes. DmC takes itself way more seriously than it has any right to be. As for DMC4, keep in mind that Capcom axed the development time in half (thank you Capcom), so that's why the story is inconsistent. Yet, for as much as people bitched about Nero when the game first appeared, it was pretty clear that the guy knew how and when to have fun, despite his more reserved attitude. Plus, he was a more relatable character than reboot Dante would ever hope to be, at least in my eyes. And when DMC4 Dante entered the scene, he was a joy to watch in every cutscene, from beginning to end. Same goes for some cutscenes involving Nero. But cutscenes involving reboot Dante just left me cold, with very little over-the-top action sequences might I add. And he just struck me as just some unrelatable asshole with superpowers, who saves the world from demons, because the plot demands it.

That's an insult to Shadow, at least I can laugh at him.

I never really understood why people were so upset about the reboot. Capcom would never have made a DmC and this game is purposely meant to focus on a separate universe to preserve the original characters. Although, the original Dante isn't as original as people think he is. He's literally Inuyasha down to almost ever detail. Demon father, human mother, huge sword given to him by his father, white hair, red outfit, a brother who lusts for power, and a fondness for junk food. You can argue that this new Dante is too generic, but I think it makes more sense. He's how I would picture a half demon who grew up without parents and is constantly forced to do battle against nightmarish creatures. He's a badass plain and simple. I also love the new setting and plot a lot more as well. I dunno, this game just isn't as bad as people say it is IMO.

Instead of being the typical dark "I hate the world and sleep with hookers while being irrationally violent" kind of "cool", he was a "Life is too short and depressing to actually take shit seriously" kind of cool, which was a refreshing change from all the melodrama other works with a similar backstory go for, including the reboot. Bottom line: People liked Dante's personality, not so much the excuse they gave us to justify his fight against demons.

TrueUnderDawgGaming While I can't speak for anyone else, I will say that my problem with the game wasn't the fact that it was a reboot. I just thought it wasn't very good. I understand this was the first time the developers worked on Devil May Cry but I still felt the combat was underwhelming. There were so many combat mechanics that were either removed or watered down. Fighting just didn't seem as rewarding or satisfying as it did in previous games and the combat is always a major priority in a game like this. There's also the matter of the story. Personally.....I thought it was shit. I know Devil May Cry was never known for the story, but the plot and writing was supposed to be one of the main selling points of this game. The developers claimed that DmC would rival the best of both novels and films and change the way people looked at Video game stories. To me the story seemed really cliche. It was a been there done that story of rebellion against oppression and the unseen overlords of the world. The story has been done countless times before and in my opinion it's been done better. Then there's the matter of the characters. Hypothetically, let's just say that the original games never came out and DmC was the first we ever heard of Devil May Cry. Even viewing the game in that light I can honestly say I would still hate Dante. He is pretty much everything I hate about modern pop culture. He's edgy for the sake of being edgy and he's distant because distant characters are cool. You could tell he only used curse words to get a rise out of the audience and that was a huge turn off for me. I can take a few fucks and damns for the sake of comedy or to convey frustration, but he went a little over board. I understand what they were trying to do with the character. They wanted him to be really rude and unlikable at the start of the game so they could have him go through a major change and become likable at the end of the game. I've enjoyed this character arc in other games, (see Luke in Tales of the Abyss) but here the character development seemed too rushed for me. There was no major event or tragedy that caused him to rethink his stance on humanity or the world. He starts out hating humanity, then has two or three conversations with Kat and suddenly has a change of heart? I just didn't buy it. There wasn't nearly enough development for Dante and Kat's relationship for me to believe that she could have such a profound effect on him in so short a time. Since I couldn't buy Dante's character development, I couldn't accept him as the reformed badass hero that the developers obviously wanted him to be. I still saw him as that unlikable jackass I met at the start of the game and thus found it hard to care about him or what he was doing. Nothing in DmC really impressed me. I kept on getting the sense that everything in the game had been done before only better. It's not a bad game by any means and I can see why some would find it enjoyable, but it just didn't do anything for me.

I could say the same for Megaman Zero, it was a mess of a game (well, given that the original developers of the classic Megaman or Megaman X didn't touch it, I can see why). Glad that ZX removed all the gimmicky bullshit Zero had.

NoFairPlay wait what? Megaman Zero is everything the Megaman series was pointing towards in its evolution. It was also developed by IntiCreates, whose devs worked alongside Capcom on Megaman X2 and other mainline titles. If anything ZX was too far off, not Zero. On the other hand I completely agree o this argument, if the game was called something different it would had been Ninja Theory's best received game and biggest seller, making them finally a AAA studio instead of an ambitious AA.

Nocta Eucta yes, but unlike most it wasn't 'new Dante isn't like old Dante, therefore bad', it's an attempt at analysis of why new Dante is less appealing and doesn't work as much as a protagonist. Notably there's discussion of new Dante before discussion of old Dante, so while it could be a lot better it's nowhere near as bad as most reviews. Note that the second half is pretty much saying that the combat is less deep and less stylish, which is true. It doesn't go into the full details of why it's less stylish (notably variation no longer has a major impact on style, as well as angelic weapons being of questionable use). In DMC3 and 4 I'd start the combat using one weapon, pull off various moves, and then switch to another to keep the variation going, occasionally using the shotgun to knock down enemies or E&I to keep combos going even though I struggle to attain S ranks. In DmC there's no need to switch from Arbiter unless I need to attack a blue enemy, although I still find myself switching to Rebellion to create a bit more variety, and the whips make keeping enemies close to you even easier than Nero's Devil Bringer did (which, starting a new playthrough of DMC4, has pitiful range at first). Probably his best point is the bosses, in previous DMC games the challenge was always getting close enough to deal damage and then dodging their attacks so you could continue slashing, at the worst you'd have to dodge an attack before getting strikes in then retreat a bit so you could reliably dodge the next attack. In the new one you have to dodge enemy attacks to do the thing that'll let you hit the real health bar.

However, nothing in the franchise ever made me cringe as much as the 1 bad line from Nico, and that god awful "Devil Trigger" track, in the DMC5 trailer.

This game came across as an attack, and the douchebag devs reinforced that. Too bad all that hard work by everyone else was squandered by those few outspoken cunts. What if 5 was promised right away? What if Ninja Theory stayed professional? What if the story/script was better?

Also, by comparison their level designs are sorely lacking. I played on the PS3 and had no issues with it. It ran amazingly (despite being only 30 fps but to me that doesn't matter as long as they don't jump around) and the combat was phenomenal, it felt responsive and quick I beat the game on Hell and Hell difficulty and had a great time. For such a small studio, Ninja Theory did a great job with this game and I can't wait to buy it again on Next Gen with the Definitive Edition. One facter as to why I liked it so much might be from both my love of God of War and the fact that I have no nostalgic connection to the original titles in the series. I didn't mind some of the things that people got so mad about and I really hope that they make a sequel sometime soon and fix some of the things that people are complaining about.

Brands have expectations, things that should be similar, and as such if it departs completely from that brand and gives less than what the last game provided of course people are going to be pissed. I don't think that Vergil was done bad here, because in my eyes he's not Virgil the second son of Sparda that is an eternal war with date. I think he's just Vergil the brother to a dick head brother that has to help him see the strait and narrow in his life and guide him to use his powers for the betterment of their world and the betterment of his own goals. In the game I always got small hints that Vergil was up to no good with the constant want to kill mundus without any care for losses and that slowly told you that this Vergil is a tactical player that likes playing it slow and precise with a large amount of impatient need to get stuff done and fast. For me I see this guy as a new version of Vergil with the same need to become a ruler, just with different world and a different life. The dlc though made him look like an idiot though and made his character become way worse with a desperate need for revenge for some reason, turning him more like an animal and less like a ruler that he wanted to become.

gantz22ify I'm by no means a fan of the game but I have to defend Dante here, as much as I don't want to. He only taunted Mundus because he needed to get a rise out of him. He was actually the first person to scold Vergil for what he did. Vergil on the other hand is a completely different story. I understand that he had to do it. The child would have become a threat if allowed to mature and he needed to be taken out. The problem I have is that Vergil clearly enjoyed killing them. Killing them out of necessity in order to eliminate a known threat is understandable but the fact that he actually smiled after killing them is seriously fucked up. He clearly has major issues if he can take pleasure from killing an unarmed hostage. How does Ninja Theory expect us to accept that Vergil is some kind of fallen Hero when he is shown to be this insane? He isn't a tragic character here. He is a revenge crazed and power mad devil.

Aladelicous Dante is capricious and boring, the combat is fun but it has no taunts and it has color coded enemies which is a horrible idea.

Without a manual lock the combat feels pretty sloppy, and the enemies aggressiveness or lack thereof made them kinda boring. And most of the bosses felt pretty lackluster. I hear people talk about how awesome Bob Barbas, but you just smash some switches and wail on him. Hardly seems like a fight at all.

Under normal circumstances I would agree but the developers at Ninja Theory claimed before the game's release that the story of DmC would change the way people look at videogame stories. That is a pretty big claim and most certainly warrants people judging the story more harshly. It's not the worst story I've seen, but it certainly doesn't change the way people look at stories in games like the developers thought it would. Mass Effect this is not.

DevilHunter1994 Adding to this I problem I find with the new Dante is something another video brought up, he seems to be trying to be two things at once, an angsty character with a traumatic past while also the same fun wisecracker the original series had. I feel it's possible to put two apparent opposites like that together, but he feels more like he was designed to be a new character and then tried to be another half-way through his creation without having any overarching focus on what he's supposed to be.

Except that the difference is that DMC was campy. DMC was trying to be incredibly serious with its story. It was trying to say hey, let's attempt good combat with a deep story. Instead, Ninja Theory gave us a pretentious story. I mean, the whole demons are ruling the people through media aspect could have been cool, but it wasn't executed well. The combat is just so god of war tier, not that it's bad, just that it's ok. It doesn't stand out and feel satisfying, it's just there to help you progress through the mediocre story

Honestly, it deserves a bit more credit than you're giving it. This game wasn't developed by Platinum (the original team) but was instead made by Ninja Theory who tried their best to copy the combat while also creating something new. It may have been a bit redundant, but it was also their first try. Which is why this game shouldn't be compared do DMC4, but the first game instead. I personally preferred the new story and characters as well. The original Dante was cool, but also extremely flat. This dante was an asshole, but who wouldn't be in his situation? I think his personality made much more sense this time around. I feel like most people think that hating on this game will get them DMC5, but it won't. Platinum left Capcom and Capcom doesn't really give two s**ts about the series. I think people should give this reboot a chance and see where it goes. Dante is already becoming more human at the end of this game and is also learning to be more humble. He may come very close to the original if there's ever a sequel.

Did you also know that he himself stated he doesn't give a shit(To every fan) of the game? You don't do that, you don't insult your customer who buys your product. You don't see Fallout 3 devs taking the piss on Fallout 2, you don't see the New Xcom ripping Old Xcom and you certainly didn't see Dues ex:HR insulting on Dues Ex. Tameem and his team however did that, extremely too. DmC: DmC was a decent game. Not great but decent, however due to the massive fuck up on the PR side of marketing this game. Fans exploded over this, Tameem was not helping the situation and Capcom kept quiet about this. This pissed off a lot of the fans who was howling for blood. Is it any surprise that people wouldn't give the game a chance? Don't try to justify that the new trailer of DmC allow Tameem to behave that way, you don't ever insult your customer. If he had say, keep assuring the fans and push to really show that this is a good game. It would have quelled some of them and maybe allow the game to be given a second. He didn't, instead he kept insulting the fans. It also didn't help that the demo was slightly buggy and was slower than the previous DMC. DMC had always been gameplay rather than story after all This added more fuel to the already burning fire. Was it really a surprise that the fans would hate it?

A203D I saw a video where Ruben explained those poses to a group of people at a convention. Apparently the Japanese developers put them in because Dante is supposed to be American and they thought those gestures were typical of American males. Ruben tried to explain to them that Americans didn't really do stuff like that but they didn't listen. Apparently there was even supposed to be a taunt where Dante bent down with his hands on his knees and looked like he was about to take a shit, Ruben had to swear up and down that Americans don't do stuff like that. I understand you don't like his poses, but the developers weren't trying to imply anything. They just wanted to give Dante an American feel, since according to the manual he lives in America. Those poses can be boiled down to cultural misunderstandings.

Really? Japan thinks that's what Americans do? Wow, that's a bit stereotypical. But with Dante in DMC4, I just wasn't happy with the way he was made as oppose to DMC1 or DMC3 where he was a lot more enjoyable to play as with his cockiness but also him realizing what's truly important. With DMC4, he's just there to be a douche and that's about it. That's why I saw I prefer DmC Dante as oppose to DMC4 Dante because DmC Dante had that punk rebel style that I as a gamer happen to enjoy in characters. In the end it's more a personal taste or a guilty pleasure.

Speedy Mercer I agree DMC 1 and 3 Dante being better, but I was okay with the way he was portrayed in 4 since he was really just a side character in that game and it was clear that he had every enemy outmatched. In DMC 1 and 3 Dante was fighting enemies that were equal to him in strength. Vergil and Mundus were able to push Dante to his limits, so he had to take them seriously. They were S class demons. The enemies in DMC 4 were never a match for Dante and he knew it. They were B class demons at best When you think of it like that it kind of make sense why Dante wouldn't really be taking anything seriously in DMC 4. He was so strong that he didn't have to. He knew going in that Sanctus and The Order didn't have a chance in hell of beating him. To Nero Sanctus and the order were larger then life threats, but to Dante they were just an average job.

Isn't it amazing when a rushed game is better than a fully released game(with all it's DLC because you know, BloodyPalace and VergilsDownfall totally came with the the vanilla DmC) with full budget implied and with 'Shakespearean' writing quality?

And yest backtracking and recycling bosses 4 times, having one dimensional characters on the 4th game was pretty bad imo. :) And Blood Palace was a FREE DLC because they didn't have time to include it. Because they were busy making a complete game. I don't see the things that were cut included to DMC4. However we got the bloody palace and Vergil's Downfall was indeed a DLC right from the start and wasn't planned with the full product. So there you go. :p

How about switching hooks from angel to demon to reach some platforms. Thats platforming as far as I know.(Timing and Thinking)

Better than DMC4? Are you crazy? The sheer amount of crazy shit that you can pull with Style Change, even with the small number of weapons is out of this world. DmC didn't have the same complexity that DMC4 had, and even so, there's times that the game deny you from doing crazy combos due to the lack of a lock-on, and the bullshit of color coded enemies. My reasons for hate the game was, first, trying to be a social commentary, close MGS, and the oustanding quality of the writting, that i will never let that woman rest peacefully even after death after that video, being almost shakesperean. The game could have better reception, if they didn't tried to slap their excuse of "reboot" on one of the most beloved franchise of video game history

Zero The Bloodedge DMC4 was a rushed, non finished and recycled piece of crap, the only good thing about that game was the graphics. If you have problems at doing crazy combos on DmC you must suck at that game, there is no need of a lock on button to get SSS rank on most of the difficultys. The game got poor sales and yet great reviews, because butthurt fans couldn't get over Dante's redisign.

This is the problem, is too easy to bring the SSS rank in DmC, even being rushed and at 40% of the original game, DMC4 still the superior game in the gameplay category, history wise is pretty much like 3, and i don't mind since it don't try to be a social commentary with that monstrosity that they call "writting". Originally, i was on the same boat with everybody, hating the game for the new look, but since i played the game, i have A LOT of things to complain about this game. The low sales are what Ninja Theory deserves for trying to fuse terrible writting, social commentary from MGS, and a water down combat system, ignoring all the legacy that DMC 3 and 4 established in the franchise with the combat and styles. This game would be better if they are smart enough to realise that it don't deserve the holy DMC name.
