And the nuance, even in such a frantically rushed piece (not the pianist but the composer). So very very brilliant. Anyone who listens to this unbelievable performance will be forever in debt this gifted, splendid pianist

this kid has BALLS - demanding but beautiful Etude - and he executes it perfectly! A lot of people don't like Yamaha's for Classical music - but, you can not deny the power they put into their Bass strings. I have a Yamaha 6'4 and had the top end softened for classical without giving up the power in the Bass. Great video - thanks for uploading!

Very musical in contrast to most other performances. This is the etude that Horowitz wouldn't play in public for it being 'too difficult'. Bravo!

I mean for Horowitz i could imagine why it would be extremely difficult. To fit those massive sausage sized fingers on notes inbetween black keys playing arpeggios would not be fun in the slightest

That Horowitz couldnt play this is of course not true, you think this Etude is more difficult than for instance the Rach 3? He didnt want to play this for a public, definitely for other reasons than being too difficult.

@@APPLE2557XDashkenazy is just dull. I'm sorry to say it but it's the truth. Even as a young man he was dull. I haven't heard Cho play it but I'm not much of a fan of his in general OK, someone put a link to Cho in another comment. I don't like it at all. As usual his musical choices rub me the wrong way. That is the case for almost everything I've heard from him

I just watched five pianists interpret this bear of a piece in five distinct and impressive recordings. All fantastic. This one, however, had me jumping out of my skin. The precision coupled with the undeniable passion was godly. No other way to describe what he channeled via his fingers here.

I just can't believe that in the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition he played etude 4. I think him playing this etude surpasses that of all people on youtube and at the competition.

0:49 can't be forgiven at such a contest. And Cho's was just too otherworldly, uncritiquable in any way and especially superior in reverberation control compared to this one.

@@orlandocfi - It's hard to tell because of the camera angle switch right at that moment. It would be nice to have a definitive answer on the matter, but I doubt this channel would upload a flawed video that could easily be corrected in any video editing program.

sam kawalski The competition after that will most likely be in 2025. It's unreasonable to delay the entire cycle of 5 years just because one of the comps were delayed a year.

There will be factors preventing him from entering the competition again. First, age group, competition rules on year of birth. Second, he already won 6th place on the year he competed. Third, he's already successful giving recitals and concerts, we all know piano competition like this gives platform to young pianist who wants to be a concert pianist.

I was wondering if that might have been a video editing error? He made very few mistakes so I was surprised to hear that note played twice..

@@orlandocfi Technically it's not an error. The notation says that once you play the A octave, you start to play the arpeggio figure on the right hand of A E A C#. Shishkin simply preferred to play a bit ritardando whereas other pianists prefer to blur those two As.

@@X123POJX It actually is. In the original score, the left hand has only one note, and he doubled it. A very small mistake in an amazing performance. However people belive is what made judges not take him for the second round. At the best stage in the world not even one mistake is allowed

It is actually supposed to be played twice , just like how the C in the first bar of the etude is played twice instead of once . You can also check the way he played for the preliminary rounds . He played the A twice . So it is actually not a mistake . You can check out the score if you want to.
