This simple test can help determine if an AC power conditioner for an audio system works to filter out noise from an AC power outlet.

Thanks for this! I’ve been struggling with AC noise and wondering if these conditioners are worthwhile. You’ve answered my question!

Hey Raymond, I dont understand, did you test the Audioquest Powerquest while having the switch OFF?.. isnt that counter-intuitive? isnt it supposed to be on to be working?

A viewer noticed the power switch was off in the first version so I redid experiment w switch ON in version 2.

Thanks, but you do know that when you show the "orange" unit closer to camera, it was completely out of focus, impossible to read anything, do you? You were looking to the camera image while making the video, right? The whole time the camera was focusing the tube power outlet. And, all power conditioner will filter frequencies above 1kHz due its internal CLC input filters, that is the minimum the manufacturer can do, a simples small toroidal countercoiled Neutral vs Live, with 100nF 400V capacitors before and after, that will remove most of the high frequencies noise.

Sorry. I can't see camera image when holding the circuit tracer in front of camera. It's a common device available from any hardware or electrical store. Thanks for CLC tip. All in series between neutral and live, I assume.

Raymond, I am grateful that someone would bother to review these AC Power Conditioners. I do, however, find a few issues with your test. The device you are using generators a particular signal. The detector is designed to detect that signal. The fact that your AC Power Conditioners effectively filter out that particular generators signal doesn't say much. For your test to have meaning, you would need to generate a broad spectrum interference (sweep generator) and see how much of that signal, at the various frequencies) is present at the output of the AC Power Conditioners. Forgive my ignorance of commercial tube amplifiers - I design and build my own - what amplifier are you using? 12AX7 followed by 6BQ5/EL84? I'm a tube-rolling octal snob myself (6SL7 followed by 6V6 or 6L6). I do octal because of the enhanced separation of interconnections it provides at audio frequencies. Oh, finally, what music were you listening to? : )

Not sure how to connect a frequency generator to an AC line. Most AC line noise would come from electric motors like frig, microwave EMF, air conditioners, etc. I admire your design chops on building your own tube amps. The little Line Magnetic amp does use 12AX7s and EL84s. I was using a CD of a new age guitarist (forgot name) but RU-vid gave me a copyright warning. Cheers.

@@AudioTnT OH MY. They gave you a copyright warning for that little, obvious sound check?? What a riot! If I were doing the review, I would hook the generator to a small diameter coil of magnet wire and set it right next to the power cord and make it an A-B comparison listening to the amplifier output. You're just trying to add some signal (i.e., interference) to the AC power. Wait...could that music have been Shadowfax???

@@BlisterBang good idea. I could put a noisy electric drill next to the AC cord and measure EMI/RFI using a smartphone app. I used an Eric Tingstad CD.

What about the noise after the amps power supply?
@AudioTnT
@AudioTnT 2 года назад
You will might hear power supply-caused noise in that component's output. If it contributes noise back into the AC line, I would hope the power conditioner filters each outlet but not sure. I could try inserting noise source into one of the conditioner outlets and scan for noise on the other outlets. Thanks for the idea. Might give it a try.

That's a rather broad question. What noise are you referring to? The noise due to the inductor being as close as possible to the output transformers (cost savings override, of course) and it's wiring inside the chassis that must also be close? I don't know who designed Raymond's chassis, but you bring up an interesting question. As a punctilious tube amplifier designer and builder myself, I'd like to see his chassis' internals. I empirically designed my latest amps' supply so carefully that, using my oscilloscope on the most sensitive range, I could not find any signal anywhere. Zero. You have to generate noise before you can feed it back. I wonder what Raymond has.

Sure they filter out noise, but if your amplifier has a decent power supply inside, it will filter noise on its own.

Well, they do something rather than nothing. If you can hear a sonic improvement, then it's worth adding to your system. If not, don't bother.

For some audiophiles, a power conditioner might make a sonic difference to their system. I use one for surge protection. As they say.. "Perception is reality".
