My favorite fish guy right here! The wonderful voice of reason, logic and truth! Not getting caught up in sensationalism. I have so much respect for you, Alex! Some of the info being put out right now from other sources is not so good for our little fishy friends, or beginners in this hobby. You are such a great source of knowledge!!

Yes! This is the only video on the subject of quarantine that's mentioned some medications can harm plants. I quarantine because if i lost all my plants there's no way i could replace them all! Thanks for info on your extra care and pre-medicating loaches, cstfish etc, that was a great point!

On the topic of feed you covered in the first few minutes, do you have any plans of going on another deep dive on live food cultures? I've probably watched all of your previous ones but was wondering if you could do a nutrution analysis comparison and the risk of infecting your fish tank etc :)

Exactly, there are always parasites or bacteria present, both in the wild and in your aquarium. It’s the health and level of stress that determines if the fish gets sick or not. Same goes for any living creature basically, including humans.

I have had several quarantine tanks that usually become permanent scaped tanks with the original inhabitants. I have a problem. 😆 But I do quarantine at least 2 sometimes 4 weeks. Just observe, no medication. I’ve learned so many things over the recent years, things I had no knowledge of since the 60’s when I first started keeping fish(off and on). Your advice (and from a very few select others)has been spot on and I am now able to keep healthy systems that support the fish/inverts/plants I like to house in my aquariums. There's a couple online shops that I get fish from that I really really trust and when I get the fish they're almost always vibrant and great condition so I might just observe them for a day before putting them in

Quarantine in a Cycled system, observe, wait, observe, research, ask, treat if necessary, wait, observe, wait, observe, wait... Man that doesn't sound like fun, honestly I plop and drop, you're lucky if I dont dump the shipping water into the tank too 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Do as I say not as I do, quarantining is a valuable skill for sure, and if you have any fish you *care* about... Probably you should quarantine anything you introduce to them, ya know? I used to quarantine my feeder fish for the turtles, and breeding stock before introducing to my guppy lines, but these days, just for my own tanks? Nah, plop and drop. Thanks for another banger of a video Alex, hopefully this long comment boosts Al Gores Rhythm 🪘🥁🪘 🕺

And considering I run a maintenance service now. I refuse to let new fish in with old fish with out cleansing them. Ok sure , you at home roll the dice 😂. When your in a office or on a call. I am the protection ❤ So For me and the countless fish i have lost playing musical fish is a big no no. But hey 👋 like they say Fishaziod all it takes is once to Wipe out a tank or room. I aim for about 2 weeks of quarantine, but if I'm being honest they usually get a week before im too excited and add them to their main tank. I try to keep my acclimation quick, understanding that fish can handle 5+ degrees F of temperature change with limited stress. Bacteria and other diseases are always going to be present - as long as the fish and system are healthy the immune systems of fish will do their job

I don't properly quarantine, but I *only* buy from a very small selection of vendors - one local store, and a couple online. I don't treat, because I'm not American - we don't have access to, well, basically any worthwhile meds. I'm aware I'm taking a risk, and it could go really wrong. I have worked out an acclimation process though that seems to work pretty well. The newly arrived fish (without any water, as it's usually mail order, if they're local fish they go into 50/50 bag water/tank water) go into a very large sample container full of tank water, and in the tank. I use an airline to syphon water *out* of the container into a bucket, and another to syphon out of the tank into the collection container. This ensures fresh tank water in the container all the time, and no water that touches the fish goes back into the tank. Use a airline valve on the container -> bucket line to control flow to a couple drips per second. The tank -> container line will just replace lost water so self regulates. Fish spend 12-24 hours in the container being carefully watched, with constantly fresh water. Be sure the container is in the tank, it's at tank temp and my tanks are all sump supplied and at 26C, so this tends to accelerate things. If there appears to be a problem, then they're going to go into a 5 gallon bucket for long term quarantine and what medication I can manage. If they seem ok, they are netted out and put into the tank, and the water from their container is discarded. I'll usually need to add some new water to the sump (or tank if it's not on a sump) over this process to replace losses, but that's ok. Just a nice water change. That's always worked very well for me. I respect the whole quarantine recommendation and always tell others to do it, but it's just not practical for me.

My acclimating procedures are bare minimum, of course I keep hardy fish too. Basically I temp acclimate and hardly ever buy new fish from big chain stores so I don’t quarantine, had an issue where I just HAD to have some Mollies and a male endler from Petco a while back. Got ich and they had parasites but I fully treated with heat for ich and food soaked in garlic for parasites and had 100% survival. That being said, listen to this and trust your instincts as to where the fish came from.

I don't buy new fish very often, but try to quarantine at least a couple of weeks when I do. However, a newly set up quarantine tank seems so sterile and lifeless. Even if I am using cycled filter media, and water parms test fine and the new fish look fine, I can't convince myself that a sterile quarantine tank is healthy and feel rushed to get them into my community tank (75g, heavily planted). I have been considering setting up & planting a 10 or 20g tank and keeping a few mystery snails or something in it permanently. That could then double as a quarantine tank when needed.

Hello! I just wanted to tell you that you have an incredible channel, at first I was overwhelmed by so much information, but the more I watch your videos over and over again, the easier it is to understand everything (Especially since my first language is not English) In the end I disassembled my aquarium and assembled it according to your instructions, I used Aqua soil and covered it with sand. Also install the second filter plus the ammonia minus sponge and physical filter material. Everything is much better and thanks to the fact that the Aqua soil does not take up as much space as the dirt, I now have a few extra liters for my babies hahahaha They are very good now, unfortunately I lost one shrimp again with the water change, but the others are healthy Now my question is this, how do I avoid water changes? How do I carry out the process safely? Will the two filters, the filter material and the plants be enough? Or will I have to do something else? Thank you very much for everything, you are an incredible contribution and an excellent person! I wish more people knew you because you are the perfect balance between natural methods and technology ❤

Have all tanks with several different things and still having problems! I'm losing my patience I'm about to just bleach these mother fuckers and start all over!!! I like having fish but this is getting ridiculous! Oh yeah 90% of the fish came from Petco so there's that! I guess I need to do some research on medications that actually work and places other than Petco! I'm actually on the other side of your state! Everything has come from a big box store. I guess I need to do something different because this issue working at all!🙄

If I were you I'd start buying from online retailers. The wet spot in oregon is like 30 bucks shipping to WA usually. Aquatic arts, and dans fish are great too but shipping is pricey.

Buy ich x, erythromycin, expel p by fritz for true worms and nematodes, salt, then api general cure for outter parasites and praziquentinal based meds for other internal parasites. Those 4 or 5 meds will treat most anything treatable.

@@Fishtory Buying fish online and having them shipped just breaks my brain!🤣 I grew up back when the only to get fish was to go to a fish store! That makes me sound old!🙄🤣
