@sulkoma brocoli and spinach are both very high intensity plants to be grown in doors, you can possibly grow spinach if you plant them closely together and growing at the same height, you can drop the lights real low and leave them on for 18 hours a day. Look for shop lights that are 4000-5000k.

Great job! As a rulebreaker for more than 6 decades, I am all about gardening junkyard style. My wife and I hit multiple thrift stores and purchased multiple light fixtures, all for $5 or less, some for even $1 because they were as ugly as ugly can be. Four of them had five octopus-like arms where the light can be aimed in four particular spots. Next, we went to a dollar store when they had 100 Watt LED light bulbs for $1 each. We bought all the bulbs in the store, 37 of them in all for $37 and tax. 4 of the bulbs turned out to be as bright as nightlights, but the rest were bright enough that you cannot stare at them. We already had 8 light timers to make it look like people are home when we are not, so there was no added expense putting the lights on 18-hour on, 6-hour off schedules. My wife got fancy and set the timers up to come on and turn off from the east side of the room to the west side in 5 minute increments to mimic the sun rising and setting. Our original intent was to start seedlings indoors, but after the first season came towards its end, we dug up several of our healthiest vegetable plants and potted them in 1-gallon containers. We not only kept tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers alive through the winter, we continued to harvest delicious food, albeit a little smaller than when they were outside. Because we had 6 really healthy pole beans still producing at the end of October and already in one gallon containers, we brought them inside this Autumn/Winter, and they have continued to produce indoors. We've had three harvests large enough to feed the two of us as a side dish, and there are at least 30-40 little pole beans growing on them today. With all the wildlife plus extreme weather that goes from flooding rain to drought and from 50 degrees to 105 degrees during the growing season, we are basically doing all our gardening in our sun room.

Depending on how much does electricity cost in your area. 100 watts per hour can be costly in a long term. In California, it’s $0.3 per 1000 watts per hour. 16 hours per day for 30 day would costs $48 and that is just for one 100 watts light. Should pick something that provides strong light but in low watts for long run. Upfront cost isn’t much compare to long term usage.

Barrina 6500K lights works great for seed starting, so does the Honeywell 5000K shoplight that I got from Sam's Club for $20/pc. If you're in zone 5 or lower and growing "vegetable" indoors for future outdoor transplant, then any led shoplight with 4000K seems to work well. Feit LED light bulbs also work. Those fancy "grow light" that really get specific are for different kind of veggies (wink-wink) or some expensive house plants. This is just my opinion and personal experience, yours may be different and I respect that.

does that mean that seedlings need a huge amount of light , much more than a growing plant, i have a ts600 , and my seedlings come up then stop, i thought they were not close enough so i put them 6 inches away and they burnt. they are not putting any roots down , (i grew two plants in the summer, 2 ft tall and the rootball was the size of your fist. )

I've recently just bought a jinhongto 600w hanging led light and a cheap clip-on led off amazon. I also have an old clip on blue and red led. I was growing erm tomatoes with a standard 600w growlight, and it was costing me an absolute fortune to run. I just switched over to led last week. I have the main 600w one hanging, which is mostly white and has a few red and blue strips. I also have a couple of red and blue ones that I've clipped onto the framework of the tent. It's also in a shed with no light coming in from outside. I've noticed a huge difference in the last week since I started using them. When I had the traditional grow lights and reflectors, my plants were chasing the light, and the leaves were pointing towards the ceiling. Now, not so much. They're still alive, so I can't complain, but it's the heat that I'm guessing they're also missing. They're an ok substitute, but I get the impression I need to buy another one to compensate for the heat and light. They do give off a bit of heat, but it's only slightly warmer than room temperature and not like a nice hot summer day.

If you need something for your seedlings and leafy greens Amazon has the UPGRADED clip on 4 wand by ONE seller for $12 dropped in a day, others are twice the price. I ordered two with red/blue color change because $12 but have another white was $16 to start my hydro veggies. I ordered them because they're USB and A/C adapters with timers and 6 dimming modes. Either way they'll come in handy being 5v. That's the electronics geek in me gotta have multi charge ability. May have to solar power so low energy consumption is key.

Good points. I grow and breed plants for the long term under LED grow lights so I do prefer a little higher end (Florawave). I like them because of the way they color up my plants, as well as the visual quality of the light they cast. But if your point is just to get seeds started and sturdy tight growth for plants you plan set out into the garden, almost anything will work as long as it’s strong enough. I would say LED is the way to go these days because of its energy efficiency and the fact that they 1) don’t need to be switched out every year and 2) contain no mercury that requires special recycling to avoid polluting the environment. I work at a plant store and we sell a whole range, and while I do recommend the higher and lights for people who want to grow exclusively under lights, for people who are just getting seeds started I advise them to go with the best bang for their buck and not worry too much about high technology, even if that means some 5000K LED shop lights from Lowe’s.

I bought 3 more once I saw the size and quality of the growth at 2 weeks. The 20W more than adequately lights a 60x60 area but I now squeezed 2 in a 60x90 with space still for a 3rd in there, I didn't get any leaf burn till about an inch away from the light source and the plants exploded from having the light as far as 14inches away. Couldn't recommend them more for someone looking to light seedlings through to the end of veg, cheap, silent, cold, and can easily be modified if you want to use the led panels and drivers and mount them to your own custom light boards

If someone is only doing seedlings with their light and putting them outside once thay are big enough to transplant, you don't even need a specific grow light - you can use any light that has two necessary paramters... Those are 1. LUMENS (brightness) and 2. KELVIN (color-temperature). The Lumens needs to be between 1500 to 2000 LUMENS. The Kelvin needs to between 4500 to 6500 KELVIN. The Lumens and Kelvin should be written on the package of the bulb/fitting. If you have those two parameters correct, the light will grow seedlings (only seedlings) really well. Be sure to start with the light about 2 inches above the plants, then raise the lights as the plants grow bigger.

I'm definitely trying to keep vegetables and other plants alive in the greenhouse throughout the Winter. This will be my 1st time using a light, last Winter all my plants died in the greenhouse. I'm in Tx.

Like the video and details. I am having a great deal of frustration with determining the amount of light required but this video helps. Not sure if you setup your shelves to have two grow lights on each shelve which means 1200 to 2000 watts equivalent to each shelf. but I think so. Just curious as I am putting together veg shelves for tomatoe seedlings, herbs and maybe some flower plants. The issue I am looking at now is does it make sense to use a grow tent 4x2 for my needs of tomatoes (full size grow for winter) and shelving. Maybe I am trying to do too much at once. It is confusing. I have a front patio but no yard to plant in. lots to ponder. I am able to do both the shelving and tent with vent and complete system but wondering what makes sense. Trying to discern.

Just look the DLI of tomato, then choose a light that gives you enough PPFD for your tomato depending on the number of hours your lamp will be on (to calculate DLI) you can use grow light calculator for this.

One interesting thing about amazon reviews from personal experience. Once I've ordered a product that was marked as one without any additions. When i received the package, it was clearly written on it, that there are some artificial components which hasn't been listed on the product page. I informed amazon on it and received my money back, and I also wanted to leave review for other customers, so that they know what they are buing. I wrote one polite, mentioning the hidden extra. My review was immediately deleted by amazon as one that is not alright with their policy. That was strange!

Go cheap with shop lights if you want, however they are good for starting the plants, not for blooms and the production of actual vegetables. That’s why the newer and more efficient grow lights have different settings so that the plants not just produce leaves but are given different spectrum of light depending on the life cycle they are in. I’m all for cheap LED shop lights, but if I’m growing through the winter for something that needs to bloom they will not be good for that. Time is money and cannot be replaced, I’m not spending time, money and fuel buying crud that may or may not work if I can buy one light with different setting for the growing of vegetables. To each their own.

Lowe’s will sell u a Jiffy lamp for $50 and boast that it’s a T5. That’s a standard household bulb! $50 for a darn table lamp, I bout shouted out at the sight of it. Beware of that overpriced basic bulb. If ur doing a closed indoor garden, u wanna match ur length/width for ur light. Don’t get two rectangular lights, get one fit to size. Mind ur amps. LEDs don’t pull much, but the fan, heat source, and humidity equipment certainly do. I was really confused about buying a light and they’re quite pricy for a 2x4. Look, we can complicate things with driver brands and bulb colors, but at the end of the day ur main concern is PAR. Do watch videos of actual PAR for ur exact light. It’s easy to dim a light, but ya can’t make it brighter. If ur plant’s leaves start to show their underside, ur light is too high or too close. Remember that some plants are inherently leggy. Just bury the stems to the cotyledons in transplant.

I keep looking for grow lights for vegetables, NOT seedlings. My problem is I have a north facing balcony that gets max 4 hours of direct sunlight in summer. I'm trying to grow tomatoes on my balcony and they are past the seedling stage and are about a foot high now (I'm told they need at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight). They still haven't flowered yet, so I want to find grow lights that, preferably can be installed somewhere on the balcony (using an extension cord that would lead to an inside plug). Or, if that doesn't work, I could still use the grow lights indoors. I just don't seem to be finding grow lights for growing vegetables. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

There are many lights out there that will work good for you. I’ve had the best luck with mars hydro and vivosun. Essentially you really want to find a grow light that has a PPFD map (this is most important aspect) you’re looking for 600-900 PPFD for your veggies.

Can you tell me what percentage you are running on the Fecida 600? I just got four of these, switching them out from these other 3 arm adjustable LED lights. They worked fine but kept falling over. I just want to be able to grow from seed, transplant to 3.5"; let them be under lights for a few weeks, then start the hardening off process. (I grow, perennials, vegetables and herbs). On my last light I had the lights just 2 inches from the top of the soil/then top of the seedling as it started to grow; this one says 12-14" so it's completely new to me. But the 20%-100% confuses me even more. I dont want to burn the seedlings. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated, as I've read ALL of the Fecida reviews and answered questions on Amazon and can not get this question answered.

The lights I got aren’t bad they are bright but idk much about grow lights and I looked up the reviews and the bad ones only were about how the product had a crappy timer and turned on and off whenever it wants or the stand was the issue idk why they are having all these issues my timer works great there is also an option to use an app but it’s confusing so I just use the timer on the cord that it plugs in mine is a 200 watt 50 watt for each light for a total of 4 lights that can be moved and adjusted I’m not having any issues I’m just worried now that I got a shitty one I tried getting a full spectrum light that produced what was as close to natural sunlight as I can get but now I’m worried I made a mistake with my purchase because it wasn’t exactly expensive I think I paid like 40-50 bucks on it and it works fine I’m just worried it’s not good enough for my plants but it seems to work without issues and I can adjust the strength of the light at the touch of a button and the timer is a 3-6 -12 hour timer that I can go thru and I can have 2 lights on instead of all 4 if needed did I make a bad purchase??

You can just use e27 LEDs if you don't have the money for real grow lights. Just use a 7 way e27 splitter. I noticed the umol was almost the same as my maxisun; distance wise. The only difference is the maxisun pb2000 covers more space but the 7way e27 at 76 watts ( one 15w 6500k bulb with 6 10w 2700k); does really good with 75-76 watts of power. Also the e27 takes up more vertical space.

@@MiguelY22 the seedlings don't get leggy trying to stretch up high? I had some other grow lights and they had to be within a few inches to get them going without going leggy. @@LifeIsGooden Hi i will try to answer your questions. Stronger lights should be further from plants. Start your lights about 18inches away from your seedlings at 100% brightness if your light has a dimmer. You can move the lights closer slowly if no damage to your plants. Your plants will need more light as they grow. Leggy seedlings means increase your light brightness or move it closer to plants. The dimmer is useful when you have less vertical space to hang your light. You can have it 12inches from your plants at 50% power or as much as your plants are okay with.
