I wanted to know if biscuits do make mitres in particle board stronger or not (woodworking).
So I tried it.

I think it’s partially the strength of the particle board failing. Biscuits in plywood might gain more than 15%. Plywood capturing the biscuit and not allowing leverage to break it apart as easily.

About what I expected - I use biscuits primarily as alignment tools -

conclustion was particle board is not strong enough in itself to utilise the strength of the biscut. not that a biscul cant help the strength of a miter.

I prefer to dip my biscuits in tea first, and then align them with the teeth of my jaws. McVities Digestives are best I find, and there is an optimum dunk time - too short and they are too crunchy, too long and they don't make it to the jaws, but they do make a nice tea and biccie soup. To do this test properly, it's best to buy the money-saving double pack.

What about OSB? I haven't seen that pull apart like particle board does.

Or MDF.

Right now, where I live, prices of OSB have gone through the roof; tripled, maybe even quadrupled from normal prices. In certain cases, plywood has been cheaper lately than OSB despite its price jumping as well.

Added strength aside, biscuits through mitres and 90° butt joints make assembly of cabinet boxes far easier.

Love it, now would using an epoxy instead of glue make a difference and is there any difference between how the dowels hold compared to biscuits? Hmmm, maybe you could work with James over at WBW because he loves spreadsheets and this type of stuff, although he’s not a big fan of biscuit or doweled joinery

It has it's place, it is almost exclusively used in kitchen cabinetry here in Australia where, say, plywood is extremely expensive and hard to get.

Mit besonders viel Leim machst du also die innere Struktur der Spanplatte etwas robuster .... Diese Platten haben eben außen die hohe Festigkeit ...

Interesting results. Great to know. I still like biscuits to help aligning the joints.

Naja so unwissenschaftlich war das nicht. Mehrere Proben. In my opinion this ist more or less sientific - a few samples. A jig for standardised continuous force applyment and a actual force measurement. (Just interesting what the average deviation of the legs length is 🤪) But I thought you would also check the standard dowels in comparison. This would be interesting as well. Good job 👍

Hmm, wonder if compressing the joints, rather than pulling apart, would have given the same results

It’s to keep them level, it’s not about being stronger.

I'm not surprised about this outcome with particle board. MDF might do better, but that's a lot of work to go to for another experiment. thanks for sharing.

Very good! That vindicates my position in seemingly endless arguments regarding biscuits - fine for alignment but that's about it. Even the slight improvement in the last probably had more to do with the glue than anything else.

Proper wood glue is stronger than the wood, so no, biscuits won't strengthen any joint, nor will dominoes or other dowels. What they do is strengthen poorly glued joints and add residual strength if the glue partially lets go (a pure butt joint is very brittle). You wouldn't want to sit on a chair held together purely with glued butt joints. The primary benefit is alignment of the parts. A 45 mitre without biscuits or dowels is a pain to align, squirming around with all the glue in it. It is also difficult to glue up panels without something to align them, especially if the boards are warped a little.
@martinsvensson6884
@martinsvensson6884 3 года назад
That's just partly true. It might not break in that plane that the glue is on. But the wood will then break around it instead. Since the forces are not distributed further into the wood anymore since you cut off all the wood fibers in one single plane. You can compensate for that by inserting something long enough into the wood so the forces are distributed away from around that plane only.

Particle board? Why would you build anything out of THAT?!? Plywood, MDF, solid hardwood... sure... but particle board? 🤨
