Q. You fluently use not only your first language but also English, Japanese, and whatnot. Also, one of your books says that Buddhist monks have been passing on the teachings of Buddha to each other beyond the barriers of countries and languages since long ago. I guess there are some tips for learning languages in Buddhism. I’ll be appreciated if you teach them.

In 1945, Ven. Sumanasara, the master of Gotami Vihara, was born in Sri Lanka, and he became a samanera (novice monk) at the age of 13. In 1965 he was fully ordained as bhikkhu (Buddhist monk) and continued formal monastic training. After teaching Buddhist philosophy at a national university in Sri Lanka, in 1980, he came to Japan to study Japanese Buddhism on the funds of the Sri Lankan Government. He is an internationally renowned Buddhist scholar and meditation master, He is currently involved in Buddhist evangelism and in guiding people into the practice of Vipassana.
Through his sincere and gentle personality, and by his ability to give sermons fluently in Japanese and English, he has gained an excellent reputation among Japanese people. Moreover, Ven. Sumanasara is giving sermons at the Asahi Culture Center, and appeared several times on NHK Educational TV show, "The Age of Spirituality (Kokoro no Jidai)".
Ven. Sumanasara preaches Buddha's teachings, which are actual and insightful wisdom to practice today.

長老はお話のプロとはいえ 本当に日本語の流暢さに私はまず びっくりしました。 私の曖昧なドイツ語も こちらでもっと頑張ろうと思いました。 人を理解するという言葉にハッとさせられました

日本語という言語を話そうとしているわけではなく、日本に暮らす人に対して話しているから結果日本語になる。ということなのでしょうか。学生時代に「その言語を身につけて何をしたいか」と先生に言われてもその言語の音色に魅力を感じていた私にはあまり響いてこなかったのを思い出してなるほどと苦笑しました。
