A Physio taught me a very simple exercise to correct the bent toe. It absolutely fixed my emerging bunion. You just flex the big toe SIDEWAYS ( out towards the other foot) repeatedly. I bet you can not do it initially, I had to move it with my hand until the brain remembered how to use that muscle. I do it for a few minutes every now and then in front of the TV, it strengthens the muscle that holds the toe straight. 🇦🇺 I wish I could attach a photo of my now nice straight big toes with no bunions.
Wow! I’ve never understood that my bunions were due to muscle weakness in my ankles and legs. This is mind blowing 🤯 and life changing. Thank you for such a detailed and in-depth video. New subscriber!

I definitely had this problem in my twenties, I started consciously correcting my over pronation. I still have a slight bunion on my right foot that I’m working at. ❤

The likelihood of more than one problem with your foot is great and you may be in the process of developing other problems like I found out, after finally getting to see my podiatrist. So Google offers suggestions which I love. And my new Podiatrist was GREAT! Instantly hit it off. Many doctors are offended if you come in and know what your foot problem could be. My doc was very glad I was thinking and taking all the right vitamins and wanting to be able to continue walking. I came in wearing Hoka Athletic shoes and everyone was wowed that I had made the right choice! I looked up who sold the kind of shoes for my 2nd Metatarsal Capsulitis problem. I came with my x-rays and he was thrilled as I made them zoomable on my iPad. He even noticed I had had a healed fractured of 5th metatarsal from when I was a teenager! He was able to tell me why I was having pain and that my big toe was part of the problem and what to do about it. It isn’t a bunion, thank goodness. He’s trying to be a vegan. I’ve been eating this way for 10+ years so he was glad to hear my reasons for going vegan and glad to see a 71 year old lady who is at goal weight. The skin on my feet are also very healthy, and overall my health is excellent. Becoming vegan got me out of a wheelchair with gouty arthritis and being able to walk to me is a precious thing. I‘ve lost 80 lbs. from when I started. The number one person who can take the best care of our health is the patient themselves. Those who come in having learned about their foot can also understand which bones the doctor is talking about. But that is true of all parts of our health. If we eat the diet human beings were meant to eat, we have the best chance at staying healthy, even into our senior years. I love learning about how to heal and how to stay well. I was already taking the right supplements, pain killers and meds. The rest I do with my diet. I am on the road to putting my pain behind me. Feel good enough to take me and my new shoes on a walk! Went out and walked 1-1/2 today. Each day now add a few more blocks until I can walk the miles I like walking.
Thank you so much for all the info, I feel like I just went to the Dr! Having some foot pain from running and ended up here…now off to watch all of your videos💯💯 Really appreciate medical professionals sharing their valuable knowledge with the rest of us 🙏🙏

Thanks for the video! I used a gel toe separator between my big toe and 2nd toe. Wore it 24/7. Helped my bunion but exacerbated my hammer toe on 2nd toe 😮
I used to feel a lot of pain in that joint but the I switched to barefoot shoes and I'm pain free. The straight line on the big toe side and the large toebox should be standard for all shoes.
i loved wstching your videos. First I had plantar Fasciitis. I had surgery for it. Then it went to Mortons neuroma, I had surgery for it. Both problems ruined my knee. I had surgery for it. My foot kills me. It actually is my toes that really hurts. It always feels like all of my toes are being twisted off. With shoes or without shoes. I have orthotics and it still hurts. I buy the best orthotic shoes. Where are you located at? I am coming to you.I worked in the hospital for 42yrs, did a lot of walking, and running.

So, i have been wearing the toe spacer for about two weeks. When I wake up the next day, my bunion hurts worse. How long should I wear them each day? Is this normal early on?
Greta information! I'm already starting to notice that when I position my leg out, the bone in the bunion feels more free and less pushed. Where's your video on how to walk in the proper way?
Thanks for the great response! I will have that video out soon, it's in the pipeline! If possible, we would appreciate a quick and easy rating from you, and a good rating makes a BIG difference for us! g.page/r/CZWo3fJqJrVpEBM/review Thanks again for watching!
I discovered I had arthritis on the top of my left foot. Upon watching this I have newly discovered, I walk funny with that foot when the arthritis is acting up. Which has to be why I now have a growing bunion! Think I need to go back to arthritis exercises so I won’t walk funny when my arthritis is acting up. Fyi! I love my big toe brace! Wear it as long as I can when home. Thank you for making me fully understand! An the products!
I just want to prevent the bunion. My bone is very slightly turning. What do,you recommend to prevent from getting worse? I have perfectly straight legs no issues , healthy.
Truth Be Told, we really hope that you feel better and thanks for watching our video! In general, treatment of bunionettes is almost always non-surgical. The most basic are changing shoes, especially to shoes that are wider at the toes or wearing sandals. Wider shoes can alleviate the discomfort of bunionnettes. Pads are also available to ease the pain. We're sorry to hear about your problem and we really hope you feel better soon! Just remember to see your podiatrist in person if you are not feeling better in the future! I have a bunion on my right foot from wearing a bad pair of shoes literally like one day.... my toe isnt mis aligned at all. Its honestly perfectly straight. But i just have this ugly bump that get irritated everyday from being on my feet running around at work 8-10 hours a day. I really hope to somehow fix this ... I just wish this never happened 😔
Help please Reply to this questions Doc😭 Can functional leg length descrepancy be corrected and if yes will the muscle imbalance become banced again??🙏❤️
This is so useful and well explained. N the links below makes it so easy. I have a question, a friend of mine has bunions n her podiatrist asked her to stop consuming protein powder suggesting that could worsen the inflammation. Just need your opinion on the same
Meena, thank you for watching. We appreciate your support. Your friend's podiatrist based on detailed knowledge of her health status clearly has reasons to ask her to stop consuming protein powder. I had the surgery in the early ‘90 on both foot at the same time which I totally regret- on my left foot the bones from one day to the next turned like this >
I was born were my feet turn in and i have bunions so bad and one foot feels like iam walking on bone iam setvere help i have to have bunion opration in afew weeks so will ot help cuz of my cubed foot
I don’t know if this is a bunion or not, but I have a huge callus on the outside of each of my big toes and no matter what I do, it always comes back. Filing doesn’t work. Soaking doesn’t work. Stretching my toes won’t do any good because this is on the outside of each of my big toes and I don’t know what to do to permanently get rid of it.
After watching your video I reinserted my orthotics and by evening the back of my Achilles were killing me. I was hobbling around after putting my slippers on. I guess this is too be expected because my ankles and knees were adjusted all day into slightly different positions?
Can you correct overpronation with a wedge under the inside of your insole? So I've been having some pain underneath the second and third metatarsals. Could that pain and inflammation have been caused by repeated calf injuries last winter?
I have a bunion on my left leg thumb as a result have to wear gents wide cushioned slippers. Being a lady very embarrassing as i can't wears regular ladies slippers. Please advise as to what bunion separators
this helps. how can I get a black splint with Velcro? in the past, gel toe spacer speed my toes too much . how to , or what exercise will help keep knees straight? thank you so much.

I bought a pair of Merrill sandals that had a toe strap kind of area looked it up and they call it Cush strap. They felt so nice that I wore them all summer. By the end of that summer I realized they had fixed my bunions! I know this would work.
@Inés Mariño I looked them up and they are Merrill Terran Cush strap flip flops. I wear them every summer now. Back when the bunions really were achy I also used to use the yoga toes at night while resting and watching TV for about 30 minutes.
So if i 'fix' my flat feet with arch support insoles will it help my bunions? My whole family has flat feet (genetics) and I have very mild bunions. No pain yet, but I dont want it to be developed further.
My feet do not pronate at all. And my leg muscles are very developed due to the fact that I was a competitive speed skater as a kid. I have a very small bunion on my left big toe. I use spacers every day. It helps the pain. But I’d like to correct it completely.
I don’t over pronate, I over supinate and my hips externally rotate…..but yet I have a bunion that started in childhood on my left and now also have one on my right…..I also have extremely high arches. Must have been high heeled shoes for years.

@@DrTomBiernacki omg, you read my mind again. I wanted to ask you about a specific problem in my foot, something which doctors in the UK are unable to diagnose. I've met a GP, Physiotherapist, Podiatrist and Musco Skeletal podiatrist, but none of them seem to have a clue. Is there an email or social media account on which I can get in touch with you?
@@DrTomBiernacki I have a swelling in a part of the foot that is neither plantar fascitis, nor the flexor hallucis. It's been there for months now. It feels better on resting, but hurts a lot if I stand for long or walk for long. If I walk fast, the left side bottom of my foot hurts terribly. Left side when you look down on your left foot, from the little toe going downwards towards the heel. The pain subsides after I rest. Any idea what category of foot problems does this fall under?
Went to a guy for muscle activation therapy for a frozen shoulder……dude worked on my feet and hips, corrected my gait and within a week my bunion was killing me! Was also taking vit K2 for the calcium buildup in my shoulder and it turned out it took the calcium out of my toe as well. Learning to walk correctly and using k2 to get rid of the calcium in the area allowed it to dissolve and within a couple of weeks I felt my boot was big in the area where the bunion had been. (the boot had formed especially for the bunion). Was a surprise but a welcome one!
Not much mention of genetics. My two sisters and I have bad bunions on the left foot only. My grandmother's feet were totally deformed with it. I have also not heard of any man with bunions. Is it a female thing?
I’m hyper mobile and can bend my big toe back no matter what angle my food and knee are. Granted, it bends less when I over pronate, but still bends. I have bunions but they don’t bother me (yet)
Hello dr tom you see, I wouldn't say I have a bunion but my big toes is kinda closer to the other toe and the bone is slighty out of its place and I was told to use one these bunion correctors before it gets worse but my question is do these correctors really help me too keep away the bunion and splitting my toes and straighten them while walking and not use surgery?? I'm not so sure about this and I'm do afraid that they may not work at the end and I have to do surgery...thank you for taking the time and reading this message
I have watched 100 videos on surgery, physical therapy, the socks, splints, and other devices, my bunion on one foot would be moderate to signifcant on the left foot, not so bad on the right foot. Can anyone give me advice from personal expereince of doing the physical therapy as I do not believe anyone in 100 miles does that out here in rule america or other ways to fix my muscles, and feet corrections and all this you talk about. Would take any good advice that seems reasonable, thank you
I kept waiting for the exercises one can do to treat the muscles and tendons for bunions, but I never saw any. Did I miss something? Do you have a link for things I can do? Thanks!
Thank you for the video, I have knee valgus, and I developed bunions a year ago, so are supportive shoes enough? Bc I cant do any thing about my knees, the cause is still there.

Something about these products being bulky and all that. Isn't the pain and the disability that comes with it later on also bulky!!? I would wear these for as long as I can during the day. Ok if I am going to a really classy meeting or whatever maybe change but for casual daily life, the periodic discomfort is way worth it compared to the prolonged destruction of bones and cartilage textures.

What is your thought on 5 finger barefoot shoes? I had surgery on both feet in which failed pretty quick after cast was removed. Thanks for the video I’ll have to check out more of your videos.

I have 2 daughters both with bad bunions from the youngest age.....as children...now theyre older teens (they call them triangle feet). Funny thing is my oldest daughter is the one that literally walks pronated. They younger 2 do not. What would cause this in children accustomed to wearing good shoes unless its sometimes genetically unavoidable. And i know surgery is not so recommended bec doesnt always work and doesn't last.....but these bunions arent from history if bad shoes and aging of the foot. Im talking about like a 10 yr old with 'triangle feet'. Any recommendations?
I don't have any recommendations, but just wanted to say that I was born with bunions, and I do think it can be genetic. I'm a runner and know I don't over pronate, however my child has always over pronated and even as an adult does not have bunions.
I have read comments saying someone had bunion surgery and now not only can’t they keep their toe down, but their gait is off and they cannot balance on that foot.🤷🏻♂️
I'm not sure what I have. I suspect gout. Looks bunion-esque. I flex with my hands and do some of the stretching techniques you've done for bunions. Plus ,it tends to hurt at night. The tendon on top of the great toe on my right foot doesn't raise up like on my left foot when I flex my toe up. It seems like it's fusing into the bone. But the more I move it with my hand the more mobility I get. The pain ebbs and flows, nothing seems to give it actual pain relief. Sometimes I just want to smash it with a hammer,I'm sure that's not a great idea. I don't wear tight shoes ,I very great support ,toes fit comfortably. Any thoughts?
To fix bunions, first stop wearing tight shoes. Then a few times a day stretch your big toe outward. I had a bunion on one foot from wearing tight cleats and did this and now I don't have one.
Do they still want surgery isn't specific enough. Is the foot in pain? Is it easier to walk? Are their feet still misshapen? Tell us which symptoms you're treating, dude!
This is an amazing video. Thank you for sharing this info. I’m going to get to work trying to strengthen these muscles. It makes so much sense!!!!! Almost, too much! Ha ha.

Having scoured the scientific literature for 30+ years, I wait, with bated breath, on the arrival of the first scientific paper to confirm that a bunion prone foot with/without inserts and stuff stuck on the toes can reverse a bunion deformity. I had hoped, at least, for the citations and references to appear in the description box. I will love to see long term audits of bunion patients, with radiographic evidence. And, pray tell, how would that person squeezing their feet into tight, high heel with pointed toe box accommodate the gel spacers.....🥳🤯
Well you're watching the wrong video because I state the opposite of what you are anticipating me stating 😁. I ask you what financial incentive would anyone have to undertake such a exhaustive study 😁, it would be the self inflicted downfall of expensive hospital bunionectomies and the orthopedic foot & ankle specialty 😅 if they proved that.
But that being said I 100% agree with you. For me orthotics and good shoes are like parachutes, you will never get a good double blind prospective study, but it just makes sense and we see it with our own eyes every day.
@@DrTomBiernacki Tom, I know you do. And, for the sake of completeness, the failure of an orthotic to manage bunion deformity was elegantly shown in a landmark PhD study of juvenile bunions and foot orthotics. The outcome: orthoses worsened the progress of deformity (a little). There are researchers from countries other than US who can pursue such work unburdened by the 'business' model of medicine found in the US. There is more to unpack, but this is not the place for that. As an aside I enjoy the content you produce!
