As a driver, I wish we had the Three point belts, back in the day. Being in a compartment with that much open room, could throw a driver around in a major accident. The Standard belt would still allow a driver to slam into a steering wheel on a high impact accident.

Last time I took an inter-city bus, I DID notice they did not have seat belts. I never went back on a motor coach. Now, I might reconsider, although the idea of having the 450 pounds lady sitting behind me hurtling at me at 70 miles an hour still scares me like hell.

I think 3 point seatbelts are a good idea on both coaches and school buses. When it comes to the transit/city bus- no one should be allowed to stand while the bus is in motion. If seat belts are available on your buses, I think the bus company should enforce passengers to use them. It could prevent injury and liability. Just my opinion!!!

Hi James! Great video, here in Australia, I always remind passengers on my coach that they are required, by law to wear the seatbelts, and there is signage reminding them also! , just to let you know, the small company I was driving for is no longer trading, and subsequently, I am now working as a Phlebotomist once again, my 21 years as a motorcoach and bus driver are now over!, but it was a fun ride! Always enjoy your videos! As a manufacturer we fought very hard against seat belts for passengers. Most of the reasons were valid (cost, lack of use, additional weight, maintenance, etc.). As an operator we were in a different position. Today, competition demands seat belts be installed. As some of the other contributors alluded to, passengers don't use them. If there is ever an accident and a passenger can prove the "operator" did not enforce the use of the belts, it raises serious liability issues for the operator. our comments about "compartmentalization" are very true. However, the real benefit of passenger seat belts is to prevent "ejection" from the bus. There have been several serious accidents were passengers were crushed under the bus during a rollover. Keep up the good work.
@theolderigetthewrongbitget4746
You have to differentiate between a 'Bus' and a 'Coach', here in the UK a 'Bus' is used for town/city work, taking passengers to work, shopping etc, a 'Coach' is for taking passengers on long journeys at higher speeds in a more comfortable setting, there is a law called 'Construction and Use' A 'Bus' is speed restricted, does not have seatbelts fitted as standard as passengers are constantly getting on and off whereas a 'Coach' is fitted from factory with seatbelts and has a higher speed limiter for motorway driving. As for seatbelts it is the law to use them but the Driver cannot enforce it just remind passengers about the law and not being insured if involved in an accident.

Great video as usual, I drive coaches in the UK and here it’s a legal requirement to wear seatbelts onboard, however there’s still a large number of passengers that don’t wear them on the likes of intercity coach travel work such as National Express, megabus/flixbus. The most common groups who stick to the rules are primary schools with teachers checking every child is wearing their seatbelt correctly before giving the all clear to set off.

What I love most about the newest MCI J4500 are the lighted seatbelt signs like on an airplane! It just looks so cool! Regards to city buses with seatbelts, the only city I know of that do it is Hong Kong. I think it was around 2000 that the first seatbelt equipped double decker was delivered, the KMB buses that has the gold livery. The 16-19 seat minibuses all have them, and to convince people to actually use the seatbelt they have a poster that states a HK$5000 (~US$900) fine or 3 months imprisonment could result if the seatbelt law on the minibuses aren't followed, though I don't think that has actually happened. In Canada, the newest coaches, including the GO Transit buses, are equipped with seatbelts as a mandatory requirement starting in 2020. This is in response to the Humboldt Broncos bus crash that happened in Saskatchewan in 2018.

@straightpipediesel
@straightpipediesel Год назад
Yeah, after a KMB bus went too fast around a corner in 2018 and tipped over, causing 19 deaths, all new Hong Kong buses are required to have seat belts in all seats. Previously, seat belts in full-size buses were only required in forward-facing seats that had nothing in front, like the center rear seat that faces the aisle. That was a regulation from Britain that was effective in 1988. Some other countries, like Singapore, do the same.

Sometimes we get a coach on our school run without seat belts, or a transit style one. And I always feel uncomfortable not being able to wear a seat belt, also because the seats on non-seatbelted buses usually are very flat (not contoured with bolsters) and because of the twisty roads we drive on, makes it even worse. So that is another advantage of seatbelts, holding you in your seat, not just in a crash. I find it very annoying when other kids on my bus choose not to wear a seatbelt, although they usually are jumping around and hanging off the back of the seats anyway! Being in Australia, the bus drivers do occasionally ask kids to wear a seatbelt, but usually only when they are mucking around and being dangerous in the first place

Here in Australia transit style buses don't have seat belts at all but the coaches I have seen basically all have them. I believe the law requires wearing seat belts, I know for sure that I do any time I am on a vehicle that is fitted with them (the main place I end up on a coach is when they are using them as rail replacement during maintanence and construction work on the train system and I notice other people on these rail replacement buses do not wear seat belts)

I can attest that the 2018 law in California isn’t strictly enforced. I rode a line run (Marin Airporter from San Francisco International Airport to Marin County). Hey James. In New Zealand it is mandatory for all long distance motorcoaches and buses be fitted with seatbelts and for passengers to wear them. Before each journey, there is a friendly reminder from the driver that all passengers are required to wear seatbelts. I can't recall any bus company or passenger been prosecuted for not wearing a seatbelt on a bus.
@jamessowinski1826
@jamessowinski1826 Год назад

@johnjkiwi7818
@johnjkiwi7818 Год назад
@@jamessowinski1826 It is very difficult to enforce this law. By the time the police stop and board the coach, the bus driver has more than enough time to warn the passengers and tell them to put their seatbelts on. Besides the police generally have much bigger fish to fry.

I drive for Greyhound and a lot of our buses has two separate straps for the driver. You can wear the seatbelt as a lap belt or pull the torso strap and connect it to the lap buckle, creating the three point seatbelt. In Europe all new buses of all types for 20 years, have a three point seat belt for the driver. - and for the passenger (or tour guide seat) City buses of course don't have any, and coaches have at least two point seatbelts on all seats. Three point are available from all manufacturers as an option, but not many buyers choose it (also sometimes there are 3 point on the front four seats and in the middle seat on the rear row - where there are 5 seats) (But of course here is Greece, we're a bit more relaxed. Haha. The law makes it mandatory equipment since 2004. I always wear the seatbelt, regardless of vehicle, but I think Most of the time I'm the only passenger to do so)

Another great video about the ins and outs of the bus industry! As an interesting sidenote, newer transit buses in Hong Kong do have seat belts. About 95 percent of buses in Hong Kong are double decker, and all of them have high back, suburban style seats. For many years, the seats on the front row of the upper deck have been equipped with seat belts, since these seats are the most vulnerable in the event of a collision. However, on buses built in the mid-2010s and after, all seats have seat belts, regardless of their place on the bus. That being said, however, most bus passengers in Hong Kong do not use seat belts, even if they are available.

Safety belts in motorcoach busses are a good idea, and being strapped in as a passenger should be optional. I would use a seat belt in a motorcoach bus just as I did the other day in my friends new pickup truck in the back cab area because I felt safe and protected. On a motorcoach bus, the passengers should not have to be buckled in if they decide not to be, and state laws should stay out of this matter.

I can remember some of our old timers talking about having 90+ people on a bus back when standees were allowed on intercity buses. People from the stairwell up the aisle back to and in the restroom. I guess that ended sometime around 2010 as near as I can figure. Photos of old coaches usually show a seating capacity and standee capacity by the door. I can only imagine what stops would have been like let alone a rest break or something with that many people on the bus. Not to mention the effect of all that weight on braking and acceleration or in the unlikely event of a crash or some other calamity. In my experience I have had people use the seatbelts and I have had a few ask me about them but I don’t mention them in my big speech at the start of the run.

I have not been on a coach here in the Uk for about 5 years. We always got the please wear the Lapstrap, fitted. I will look out to see if we have 3-point belts now. I was traveling on a "bus replacement service" "A coach pretending to be a train", it had lap straps fitted, I chose not to wear it. I sat behind the driver, who had to break, for an idiot cyclist. We were only traveling 30-40 mph. It was enough to dislodge me from my seat. No harm done. A good story to tell though. In the UK, it is frowned upon to talk to the driver, unless reporting something is a miss. After the incident, my driver, after ensuring I was not about to die, or had any injuries. We discussed part of his career, which involved a service bus, a regular stopping service.

Well, from what I know in Europe, it was similar. I never saw seat belts in buses until 2001. The first one I saw was the (back then new) 2001 Mercedes-Benz Integro (I don't know if they are gonna release the 3rd gen or when is it gonna happen, but talking about this now leads to another topic). When I first saw these seatbelts, I used them almost every time. But it wasn't precisely mandatory at that time since it was still something new. Then it started to spread to the other manufacturers. I don't know when, but I know that in 2011, I was going from my hometown to Fátima city and my mother and I were in an Irizar (mounted over an IVECO chassis with an 8 gears manual gearbox and a Top speed of 100 mph). At that time it was mandatory to use the seat belt and the police would apply a fine in case someone is caught. I understand the reason. In Portugal, for example, there were some accidents with coach buses where the bus flipped over. One of the times, most of the passengers lost their lives. So can see why they applied this. For city buses, I also don't see the need for them and it becomes not practical. It may even lead to some confusion between passengers or just become a waste of money. I think that, for city buses, only the bus driver has the seatbelt and, for safety, it has to be used by law.

Bad things can happy, and mothers against (insert scare) will lobby congress. Also, on the economic level, it would really tick me off if I had to install 10k worth of upgrades in each coach, just for passengers to not even use them or be mandatory. I have a feeling that certain lobbys were at play (much like with the ADA act, and while I drove, I used the lift once....ONCE! And having a van on standby, even giving them a free ride would not be good enough, no, you gotta spend on the lift!) No wonder things keep getting worse and more expensive.

I live in New Jersey and our school buses by state law, have seat belts on them. And I've been on older coach buses before that didn't have seat belts, like the MCI D4505 or the older MCI J4500. I do remember that for a field trip when I was in sixth grade, I think we were using MCI D4505's and older MCI J4500's from what I remember, and one of the buses had lap belts on it(there is a story why I got the bus with the seat belts, because I wanted them and there was this whole thing about it that I'm not going to go into) but it did have lap belts and they were not very tight but I tried to tighten them as much as I could though. And for my field trip a few months ago, I was on an MCI D4505 and that didn't have seat belts. I ended up holding on to the grab handle in front of the seat because that's what I was comfortable with. I am in support of the law that new buses are required to have seat belts, to keep you safer in a crash. If it were me and the motor coach had seat belts, I would where them because that's I'm comfortable with and that's what I'm used to because I always where them in my parents 2007 Toyota Yaris sedan and 2021 Hyundai Elantra and I always where them on the school bus. I'm happy that you make videos on these topics so people like me that are interested in motor coaches can have a place to geek out and learn more about some of these things. Thank you!

Retrofitting older pre-2016 motorcoaches with seatbelts could make a carrier more competitive and attractive to elementary and high schools who wish to charter a motorcoach.

@eightwheels Год назад
Retrofitting older coaches usually means a whole new interior. The seat older style seat frames weren't designed to support seatbelts. So in many cases it's prohibitively expensive.

The motor home conversion there is a lot open areas most are driven by owner and occupied by family. There is loose items inside. Some people prepare food and eat when in motion. Coach operates don't allow eating in coaches

Hmmm. Regarding the topic of 2-point lap belts and 3-point torso-lap belts. That's quite an eye opener against 2-point lap belts. I wonder however why a lot of South East Asian countries still use lap belts (not that the passengers are wearing them any way).

I am a advocate of seat belts because when i was in middle school i was in a school bus crash and a car came in our lane we hit it head on ramped it and riped the front axel off we flew out of our seats and i hit my Head on the roof and then slammed back down in the seat

Seat belts are on all buses in ireland. By law the driver is responsible for passengers up to 17 years old. After that it is the responsibility of the passenger.

This may be just me, but I actually prefer to wear a seat belt for myself if the bus has it (just so I don't move around the seat as much)

City buses in Ireland do not have seatbelts for drivers or passengers. Coaches do. The law here requires buses that can carry standing passengers to limited to 65km/ph. Coaches can do higher speeds. Seatbelts are required by law to be worn by law but like the US few wear them however if you don't wear your seatbelt and god forbid the coach is involved in an accident then you will not be entitled to any compensation if you don't wear the seatbelt.

Hi 👋 new subscriber. Can you make vlog about the kneeling system some motorcoaches and city transit buses have? Also do you have any knowledge about the Prevost x3-45 (what Greyhound currently buys)?

Uk most passengers on coaches don't use belts,I do as I prefer to stay in my seat if a coach has an accident,when travelling through the eu a seatbelt has to be worn but is only checked if coach stopped on its journey by police and I have had this in Spain and Prague,unfortunately these are revenue stops to bolster public funds

IMO, being killed or injured in any kind of traffic accident is the most pointless waste of live / health, anything that can be made to avoid it, should be done. Im also of the mind that great many of the "motorists" have actually no business being in control of a vehicle in a public road... people cry about firearms, when the real killer is all the fucking idiots texting and taking selfies while driving, mowing down first graders... and then it was "just a accident"...

Seatbelts are cheap to install but if accident happens then 40 people would be critical injured or killed in accident and medical bills doctor bills and funerals and possible Lawsuit aren't cheap.

I am passenger, I prefer seatbelt bc of some buses get tilted to one side and I think it help to keep you from getting injuries. I disagree with you on standee. Lots of coach busts for commut have limited amount of standee. It display bevy yo the door. Drivers should abide what the limitation of seated and standing passengers. They need to be careful on this bc news media will get on your butt.

Anyone have a line on cheep and easy retrofits?
@josephheston9238
@josephheston9238 Год назад
The only way that I can see at least a cheap retrofit is to take a belt-equipped seat out out of a new bus and one without the belt, disassemble them and look at the frame on the belted seat to see where the belts are mounted, and fabricate the mounts so that they can be welded to the non-belted frame, and that will be your template for the conversion.
