Will this $3.98 knife sharpener really sharpen your knives? I tested it.

I found this sharpener a few years ago. I found it works great for keeping knives sharp when dressing wild game. Fits in my pocket and when the knife dulls a bit, a few strokes on the ceramic side & I'm back in business. I use it on my kitchen knives. A few strokes after using the knife and then back into the block. I've bought about 6-7 of them. Have two in the kitchen drawer. Two in my glove box in my Truck and one in my hunting knife bag. I've handed out a couple to my friends.

A lot of people seem to be snobbish and act like pull-through sharpeners are trash and everyone should learn how to use a whetstone. I don't need my knife to be razor sharp I just need my knives to last longer without going completely dull and this seems like it will do the trick.

Bang on! This is certainly not the best way to sharpen a knife BUT it does sharpen a knife! Which is better than not sharpening a knife at all 🙃

Depends on the knife as well. If you cook only occasionally and a 20-40 €/$/£ knife is what you use, a drag-through sharpener is okay. But you definitely do not want to use one on your fancy jewel knives.

If you are a professional cook, in the middle of dinner service, they are good. If you are ONLY using that, you will eventually change the angle of your knife. And they can also make chips in your blade much worse. They are a double edged sword.

I found that once you have the edge prepared with these, gently hone it with the white ceramic. Smooth light gentle pull. I have used these types since early 90s. Not great for fine steel but you can hone them without changing the edge. I know what you r saying they can damage if you try to sharpen to much or to aggressive. I have my dads life time collection of knives. Not anything fancy just good quality steel. My favorites are the old Gerber hunting blades. One solid piece from tip to handle. Even some of the Pakistan blades from the early 70s are very good steel. Just my opinion stay sharp my friend.

It works!, (maayos na gamit ), normal used knives just needs 10 passes each end, 20 the most in my experience . Since it's inexpensive, I bought 3, for my car tool box.for my fishing tackle box, and for my kitchen. Ciao!,

Rapala makes a similar sub $4 pull thru sharpener with two stages of ceramic rods instead of carbide. It restores and edge on a dull knife without being as aggressive as carbide. Those small pull thru sharpeners don’t last long before the ceramic gets loaded up and stops working. I like them for long distance backpacking as they are very light. My favorite inexpensive sharpener is the lansky turnbox.

Just took a look at the Rapala one, looks like it would be a lot more stable 👍🏻 The main problem with this Smiths one is it was hard to keep it steady and sharpen the edge evenly.

Those are junk, and they wear out fast. Get a $25 Cook's ceramic rod and use it often, before your knives get all dull. A ceramic rod will keep your knife razor sharp and not wreck the blade by tearing steel off of it. A rod will also let you sharpen it to the original angle with a few strokes, so you don't have to spend all day reprofiling every knife you sharpen.

I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker on my knives and a cheap one when visiting my mother in law. The cheap one i have, you put the knife sharp side up, and drag the sharpener along the blade. Seems dangerous, but you have so much more control. You do lighter strokes as it gets sharper.

I think if someone has very little money to spend then this is a viable option. No

I have this type of sharpener for 30 years. I bought the first one at my local hardware store. It was one of those impulse buys they have at the checkout counter. It was 5 bucks back then and I still sharpen all my smaller knives with it. I also sharpen my brothers and other family knives. Mine is blue and a little smaller but much better made. I just bought 2 of the yellow one shown here. It cost less than 5 for both. I also picked up the polished metal one with a nice handle and 4 ports, one port is tungsten to sharpen scissors. That was only 15 bucks and brought back the razor sharpness to my fine very old kitchen set. German knives from west Germany they say, I think they were ordered by my Grandfather in the 60s or very early 70s. The steel is very hard and difficult to sharpen. The priority chef made them slice paper. 100 600 grit diamond rods and 1000 ceramic for finishing. On the end is tungsten rod for scissor. I even sharpened a cheap dollar store pair with the plastic orange handles. They never cut right, well they cut everything now. They dull very quick cause they r way cheap but 5 pulls per blade and they sharpen up. I got excited and wrote way to much but the diamond rods and ceramic are very easy and efficient, they are fool proof if you gently pull them thru without applying much pressure. Make sure you take your time and make a steady complete pass. This guy was to aggressive with that blade. That is your choice but why. I had 100 dollar systems before this one and they just sit in my garage in the nice wooden case they came in. The expert sets are diamond coated rods like these but require a guide and it takes a few min to get it all set up. If your blade is just dull but not chunked out, just try the white ceramic rod like 10 easy smooth pulls. You can feel the friction get smoother as it becomes sharp. Make sure u have it straight and be smooth and gentle with pressure when pulling thru sharpener slot. You will have very sharp knives that will cut your skin so easily. I still get my fingers cutting greasy deer or bear sometimes. These are designed to make it easy for anyone to sharpen a knife. If you start here you can't go wrong. They are cheep easy to use and sharpen most blades. When You want to step up your skills there are no shortage of pro sharpeners. Seriously be safe don't cut your finger off.

Hello, did you end up finding an ICEL knife?

By twisting the knife, you can manipulate the angle. But yes of course something adjustable would always be better
