Do Hedgehogs Make Good Pets?!

My wife and me love our hedgehog. He's now 14m old and he's been domesticated into being the softest little ball of spikes ever. We call him Euclid, and he's honestly a great pet for us :) (wifey adds he's cuddly and fun and super low maintenance) Now we've watched the video: 1) I do agree with the routine. EVERY day, we take him out for an hour +, he is usually slightly huffy when we take him out, but then he goes loo and calms down and we give him a cuddle, and when he goes back into his cage, he goes to tunnel, expects worms, and wants to be left alone for rest of night. As we both work and get home early evening, this works great for us. 2) Totally agree, you get out what you put in. 3) We've never really struggled with wee/poo, he goes once when we wake him, and then we place his wheel above a litter tray, and clean wheel most days (basically everyday he runs). 4) We clean cage once a week, simple enough. 5) Food is easy, litter is easy, and we have a few fleeces on a cycle for his cage floor and bedding. Maybe we just got very lucky, but honestly for us, it's a great pet. We did feel well informed, and to be fair, the breeder seemed to do a great job and handled often before we got him after ~9 weeks.

I had wanted a hedgehog for a while, and I binge watched your care videos before and after I got one. I've had Widget now for about two months now, and he is the sweetest little grumpy bump. Your videos helped so much! ❤️

I thought I did a lot of research prior to getting a hedgehog but there were still some not so great surprises about them! I love my Mabel...but she's different than I expected. If you're getting one you need to consider the negatives as well. 1. There is so much poop...videos said they were messy but I don't think I realized just what that meant and how much I'd be personally getting pooped on. Litter training is just not going to happen with my hedgie. 2. The smell. I am used to rats who used a litter box so I was not used to just how messy and smelly a hedgehog cage can get and fast!! You really have to be on top of the cleaning. We have a system now that works great but be prepared to scrub down a wheel caked in poop several times a week. 3. It took so much longer than I thought to gain my hedgehog's trust. We are going on four months of daily handling and attention and I am only now seeing some days where she relaxes her spikes and stops hissing. Again I was used to rats who are sweet and loving from day 1...Mabel took a lot more work. Overall, I will say bonding and earning her trust has been super rewarding and they are amazingly complex, sensitive little animals. I enjoy her so much. But would I ever get a hedgehog again...probably not.

Tori:"hedgehogs are almost impossible to potty train" Me:....oops😂 My hedgehog is kinda potty trained. She just has a really strict routine, and I just know when she's going to poop by body language. Also it's really useful, because you can see if she struggles to poop, and you can see immediately if the poop is healthy! Guess I'm just really lucky with my baby🦔❤

I’m so glad I started watching your videos before I got my baby. None of the “dealbreakers” were as big of a deal to me because I knew what to expect! And I also read several books on hedgehogs/ watched other hedgehog youtubers/ formed a great relationship with my breeder BEFORE I brought him home. When I finally picked him up from the breeder she told me I was the most informed customer she had ever had. Thistle (tiny sir) has been with me for about two months now and I know I absolutely made the right decision!

I got my first hedgehog a little over a month ago and I absolutely love him. He is a perfect hedgehog for my first time owning one, because he is soooo outgoing. On the first day he was home, he was walking around and interacting with my whole family. He’s quite the messy little dude, but it’s all good 😂. Love you!

I got my baby hedgie three weeks ago and she’s already trusting me but that’s because when i got her i saw that between the other hedgehogs she wasn’t so afraid when taking her🤷🏻‍♀️ and that’s how it is, I’m sure that if i chose randomly i would still be fighting to bond with the hedgehog 🥴 As you said it depends on your hedgie because they all have different personalities and stuff. 🙌🏻 I really recommend doing all the research before getting one 🦔 I did like a month of research before getting Hugsy 👌🏻

I’ve had my hedgehog a year now. I got her from a rehoming ad, the previous owner was allergic. My hedgehog is sorta potty trained. Naturally. She will usually only poop in her litter box. Rarely anywhere else but either way she does get pretty messy. But I love her no matter how messy or grumpy she is.

Thanks for another great advice video! I thought about whether or not to get a hog for 6 months, but Draco convinced me I needed one. No regrets, he’s great. Not a very tame boy, but making steady progress. But really good with his mess! Never gone on my bed or carpets, always chooses hard floors. And his wheel of course. I learned more here than from his breeder, thanks for putting in so much time!👍🏻

I completely agree. For me, my hedgehog is the perfect pet for me, but my best friend would NEVER get one, it really depends on the person.

I’m currently babysitting a hedgehog for my niece and they’re such interesting creatures! we bonded for a while today and he licked my entire arm. Great video. I just picked up my first hedgehog on the weekend, and he's settled in amazingly quickly and seems to enjoy being handled which I was surprised at. One question though - what would you consider some good toys for them to play with? I have a ball in his tank he can roll around to get mealworms out of which he enjoys, and his wheel, but is there anything else he might enjoy?

Very good video. I love my hedgehog Piper. She is very relaxed with me and is actually quite easy to take care of. I love it when she falls asleep in my hand.

My hedgehog Pepper is an Algerian Dark Grey with badger stripes, she kinda looks like Trix! I love them both so much☺️

i really think they are great animals if u are ready to be taking care of one. I have a hedgehog and he is sweet but wayyyy to messy. He is so soft when calmed and so kind. He also eats a lot but doesn’t really like bugs idk why? mine is is potty trained and so grateful. He doesn’t really play with his toys which idk why . But i really like him he is chill , messy ,funny and soft. They are like little babies

I had a hedgehog for 2.5 years, he was my world, he was very sick and there was nothing I could do about it, he was happy and not in pain, he died peacefully in his sleep. About 2 months after I started volunteering with a pet shelter (Tiny Paws Animal Rescue, if ya wanna look us up on fb.) And they had a little girl named Rose-flower. I ended up getting her because they knew I had experience with hedgehogs, and she was very neglected and way too skinny in her old home, I've had her since April 1st and she is doing amazing, she's so calm and sweet. Honestly if you can handle it, they are the best pets in my opinion.

Like you said at the begging, I love my hedgehog but I wouldn’t get another one (or at least mot get another one for a long time). I prefer an animal that I can “play” with and interact with more, that’s why I like rats. (I also got really lucky and my girl is very friendly and curious, but she is also happy to sleep ina bonding pouch)

I love all three of my hedgehogs. My girl is the cuddly one and she’s potty trained where as the boys just poop and pee where they want but they’re still really great. I agree it takes a lot of time and effort, it took me hours a day with each of mine to get them friendly and comfortable. My girl doesn’t ball on me anymore and will come to me if I put my hand out in her cage. It just takes time and dedication so I do agree that it depends on what sort of pet that you want.

That whole noise thing is nothing compared to the sound of when my sugar gliders are both mad at the same time, even the sound of one angry sugar glider is horrible and load ( but I still love them😂)

You inspired me to get my baby girl Navi, i was so afraid of how long it would take for us to bond. But from the moment i brought her home to even today she loves to cuddle and loves to be around me, she will follow my hand while playing (that’s her letting me know she wants to be held and pet) and i’m so glad i was lucky enough to not have too much trouble. Yes they do, I have had Tiggy African pymgy hedgehog since September and I have had depression and upset with what's going on at home with my dad who breaks Down with depression with a bottle and my mum who has been very ill and in and out of hospital, so Tiggy has kept me going cheering me up and kept me insane

I have a headgehog he is a good pet it was a process for me and him to get used to each other the quills aren’t easy for some people but I got used to them. He don’t mind pooping everywhere and he is my best friend -on the days when he’s not grumpy - 😂

I’ve rescued one from my niece who apparently didn’t watch this. “Lily” was badly neglected. I’m glad she will be happier now, I’ll care for her, but all she is to me is work and not what I wanted in a pet. I’d have never gotten an exotic pet. Poor things don’t belong here and don’t want to be. 😞

I never thought it was a big deal when I was younger but I know a lot of youtubers, specifically hamster ones say to never wake up your hamster during the day because that’s cruel. I have a couple questions anyone can answer 1. If you are a student would it be best to get a hedgehog around the beginning of summer so they have a lot of time with just you or would it not be good to get a hedgehog at all. I have a heat lamp ready but was wondering if I should use it because like I said earlier his cage is the right temperature and my house is the same temp all year round. Hi My fiance has bought his first Hedgehog He loves her to pieces already and he’s only had her two days

My hedgehog is a shy girl, but she trust me and my daughter

I've had my hedgehog since April of last year and he just turned one year old! He has been peeing in his water bowl a few times and I wanted to know why he does that.Also,he spends the ENTIRE day asleep.I take him out of his cage and I carry him for a while ,after that I lay him down somewhere and he tries to find a blanket or his fleece sack to go into to go back to sleep.The only time he's awake is around 4-5 ish AM (sometimes 9 p.m) to eat and run on his wheel then he goes back to sleep) He is really not the playful type of hedgehog that would want to play.What do you suggest I do for any of these cases?

I've had my hog for about 2 weeks now and I noticed he has dry flakes? He doesn't scratch much at all but just has some white flakes on his quills. Is that normal?
