I just cant get enough of seeing how close and trusting she is to you. I've had many pet rats and boy how they show it too =) Just why can't they have a longer lifespan...
Thanks, I've kept and bred over 50 hedgehogs. :) All super nice and calm, well, except one brat that had a bit of an attitude lol. Never a single bite.
Hedgehogs are snugly, even when young. Whithen the first two days I had my hedgehog, she became super welcoming and happy. She also sits on my shoulder.
Honestly so happy I found all your videos! Very informative and helpful, you definitely seem to know your stuff and the information you give us exactly what we need to know. I've been researching for a few weeks about possibly adopting a hedge hog but was unsure if it would be a good fit for my family or not... I've never even held a hedge before but your videos help me feel more comfortable! Thank you for sharing the wisdom!
Thanks so much for the video!! I have been thinking about getting a hedgehog for a while now. I have watched all your videos on hedgehogs and they have helped me make my decision and helped me become more educated on hedgehogs. Definitely getting one. Thanks again for the great videos!
Really enjoy your videos when you help people . How to take care of animals . Its great news or awareness to people that don't realize it's a lot of work and care . Liked your video also ok take care friend .
Our hedgehog came from a very active, noisy household with plenty of pets. She was little ball of stress, and it took her about two months to completely warm up to us. She is much, much calmer now; she rarely balls up in fear anymore. We kept taking her out of her little home and allowed her to run around our apartment and even on us. She is one of the sweetest pets we have ever had. :)
I've been wanting a hedgehog for a little less than a year now and I've been researching and researching everything I can on them. I have learned more in 4 videos from you than any website out there. Thank you so much, you have been such a big help as far as me gaining knowledge about them. Now all I have to do is convince my boy friend. Any videos for that? Lol
lol. Boyfriends can be hard to convince lol. Just keep trying and explain how it would be fun for you both :P Have fun with your pets and let me know if you have any pet questions!
I gave Maya, our hedgie, one of my blankets (a small, thin one), and she adores it. She sleeps under it every day. I think that really helped her become used to my scent, and who doesn't like a warm blanket?
This guy is so sweet. I'm probably old enough to be his grandmaw. I've had herps in the past and have worked at a large US zoo and have worked with elephants and Bactrian camels. By now I'll stick with dogs. Love all critters, even spiders.
Earthling1984 ohh lol ipps! btw that comment was not hate lol What do i do if my hedgehog will not uncurl from the ball? i want to pick her up but she pokes me everytime i do! btw again you earned a new subscriber! Great vid!
@@earthling1984 i think i am one of inexperience owner :( i just got a hedgehog.. he's so grumpy and so agressive.. when i pick him.. he keep popping and hissing.. And recently he often scratching his skin, looks like he get an itchy.. what should i do? :'(
Since your an experienced hedgehog owner is it hard to give them a bath 2 days ago I didnt know what hedgehogs were since watching a lot of your videos ive been begging my grandpa and grandma to get me one what is your advice let me know thanks for your time
Thanks for making this vid! How much do they usually cost? Where can I buy them? My mom won't let me get one but I've been researching and hoping that I could get one!😀😃
I just got a 6 week old hedgehog (Daniel) about 2 weeks ago, I put him on my sweatshirt a lot to walk around and he seems to like it more but whenever I move or want to pick him up, he balls up, not super intensively but he gets scared and im not sure what to do, I try to handle him a lot but he hisses as im handling and doesn't fully spread out.
I've seen a couple of your videos and your hedgies are so calm! My two girls cannot sit still. As I am writing one is crawling up my pant leg! Every time I try to hold them they want to crawl up my chest or play/chew my hair. Do they calm down as adults or is it more personality based?
I got an issue with mine. I bought it and he was already big, the previous owner probably did not pet him a lot so he is brumpy but the main issue that I have is that usually if I take him out of his house and after some time of having it he just start to poop and pee right there in my hand, is this common? could you give a suggestion?
Hey man I gotta question I bought a hedgehog about a month ago, she's 3 months now and I bought her a spinning wheel and she only smells it, she has never used it, so I was wondering if there's something I can do?
They make great pets, but they require as much attention as a dog or cat. So only get one if you are dedicated to having a very needy pet for many years.
Is it okay to keep them in a guinea pig type cage? A breeder I contacted about seeing their hedgehogs said they should be kept in plastic tubs, like you do. The breeder said hedgies will get injured in the bars. So, now I'm confused.
Hello, i just bought a pair of hedgehog from the breeder and not even a week yet. Both of it are just 2month+. I'm playing with it every night but they does not seems like wanna play but rather hide in a corner and sleep. The problem i'm facing with is whenever i hold them, it will try to bite me. I did clean my hands with water without using soap(which might makes it smell like food) before carry them. I got bit by my hedgehog several of times. Is there any solution that can help me from not getting bitten again? Help me please
Hmm, hedgehogs shouldn't be sold until at least 3 months. But, yes, they do best on high quality cat food (never use cheap crap) with insects (I mix freezedried insects into quality cat food).
@@earthling1984 I didn't really know that information, but I'll keep it in mind. I got Royal Canin cat food (for young cats) and I started mixing the insects with the cat food today, let's hope he has some. I appreciate your help 🙏🏻
Hey, I have a question about my beardie he is not basking and is mainly on the cold side sleeping! He is not enthusiastic about eating. He only eats crickets if they r right in front of him not chase them. Any ideas
So I'm thinking about getting one are there nose very sensitive to dust like rats would cat hair bug them. One last question are they more social with two or is it the same
I had a Hedgehog a few years back. He bit my then GF but never me. Great "simple" pets. Not as much time dedication as a dog/cat/other exotics and relatively cheap to keep. The nocturnal thing does turn some people away though.
Hi! So I really want to buy a hedgehog but I've never owned an "exotic" animal beside a hamster, fish, cats and dogs. I am in school but only have class on tuesdays and thursdays. Could I bring my hedgehog with me out and about? Or would it be ok to play in the morning and then leave for a day without interaction and then I come home at 5 and play? I'm just trying to make sure that the hedgehogs life will be the best :)
Accually, hedgehogs are quite independent, and will take a couple weeks of not months to get used to humans. Playing with them, unlike dogs and cats and ferrets, may be annoying to the animal. You can pick them up from time to time, but I wouldn't recomend putting them on the ground and "playing" with them like a dog or ferret.
I bought a big wheel for my hedgehog recently but i don't ever see him using it, will he eventually start using it? Is there something i can do to get him too? or another toy/ exercise method.
There is no way to make him use it. He probably will once he explores it and figures it out more. Some hedgehogs play with cat toys, some don't. You could try some.
I don’t necessarily good for kids. They are either too scared, or too excited... which both of these can make a hedgehog stressed. Plus, their quilts aren’t very convincing and beyond all kids are impatient.
I've heard horror stories about how they scare easily and can have heart attacks because of it. Is this as prevalent as I've been told? Also, I live in Minnesota and I've heard they have a very narrow range of acceptable temperatures, towards the low to mid 70's at all times.
Wow. Great video with great info. I've wanted a hedgehog for over 2 years now, but my parents are hesitant in letting me adopt one. I've done all my research, I've found out a lot about them and I've tried to convince my parents. I have 3 dogs, and the thing that my parents are just worried about is that if they'll "smell bad" or "stink". I know you mentioned in your video that they poop less than hamsters, but do they smell bad? I understand that they need regular cleaning, like hamsters and other rodents. But do they give off the smell that hamsters do? I've had bunnies before and they do smell bad even if their cage is cleaned. I just really want to convince my parents in allowing me to adopt one.
+narlly candanedo As long as you clean the cage every 5 to 10 days (depends on your hedgehog and how much they eat/poop - I clean my cages once a week) they won't smell. So basically, keep the cage clean, and you won't smell a thing. I recommend Aspen bedding. NOT pine or cedar, they can kill your hog.
Hamsters only give off a smell if you don't regularly clean their litter-tray/wee corner (or wheel, as they can sometimes wee on the run). If you pick up your hamster and smell their actual fur, you'll find that they don't 'musk', like a ferret would for example. It's all down to how much attention you give their cage. If you leave them stinking in their own wee for days, then yes - they will reek. Same goes for rabbits, and I'd assume hedgehogs are the same (given the information that Earthling1984 has provided in these videos).
My wife and I are gone every day 8am-5pm and my wife is worried that we won't have enough time for a hedgehog. Aren't then basically inactive during the day?
Should be just fine. Just handle every night, and mornings whenever you can too. Daily handling is important for the first few months so the hedgehog continues to bond and get tamer around humans. Going to work during the day should be just fine.
Im about to turn 14 and i having been saving money and researching hedgehogs i have a syrian hamster and all of my friends and family say that my hamster is the best hamster they have ever seen but is taming and socializing a hedgehog much harder? I also had to move my hamster out of my room because he bothered my allergies will a hedgehog bother my allergies to? How much time a day do you usually spend with that hedgehog and how long before she became that tame?
The hedgehog should be pretty tame upon purchase. You wouldn't buy a dog or cat that bites or is aggressive, so don't buy small animals that do so either. All my hedgehogs were tame and easy to handle upon selling. So just get from a good breeder or animal expo, and make sure to handle first. As long as you get one who was brought up well, it shouldn't take long at all to tame. It may cause some allergies like your hamster.
I have wanted a hedgehog SO bad, I understand the care needs and everything else about them, and they are just my favorite pets - but they are illegal in my state, so I will never be able to get one :(
Hedgehogs should not be sold until 3 months. Bad breeders often sell too early, which is often accompanied by poorly socialized animals that are hard to handle and not tame. Good breeders will only have tame and easy to handle pets. Never buy a pet that is scared or bites. This just lets bad breeders keep abusing, selling too early, and not socializing their animals. You wouldn't buy a dog or cat that bites you, or, is very scared or aggressive. So, don't do that with small animals either. If a breeder is selling before 3 months, won't let you handle first, won't let you see their breeding facilities, etc. do not buy from them.
The only thing I worry about is I hear they can carry salmonella or certain disease :3 :/ and since I’ve never owned one before I don’t know how likely that is or if it’s more of a keep the cage clean and give your hedgehog a wash 🧼 From time to time to keep it clean
P.S they haven't gotten me a hedgehog yet im waiting to see if my mom will get me a 2 month old hage hog because I watched your video on how old they should be so I think 2 month old hege hog is good to start with hopfuly I becoke an expert like you so I can help pepole with there hedgehogs in the future
im planning to get one. i've found one and it got a long spikes about an inch and a half. do they have different spike length? because your pet"s spikes are shorter.
+Earthling1984 oh, my bad, sorry. i mean i've found a local pet shop that sells a hedgehog. yup, just one hedgehog. i kinda feel something that is not right about that pet shop. that single hedgehog has longer spikes, may about an inch and a half and im comparing it to what your hold in the video. and because what they are selling has longer spikes, im thinking maybe its an older hedgehog and its hard to tame and i prefer a younger one.
you see, i don't trust the seller. they don't know what they're selling, other than its a hedgehog. il try to take a picture if they will allow. thanks!
My hedgehog is bleeding from where she pee, the vet told me that maybe it was a urinary infection and gave her an antibiotic, but she's still bleeding and it's been 4 days, do you know what could it be?
I just got my 3 month old hedgehog Friday night and whenever I go to pick him up he makes this sound and curls up into the ball. Is it because he's new and doesn't know anything or because he is grumpy and doesn't like me?
