To be clear my version of squiding is just leaving the jacket at home. I still wear my boots, bike jeans and gloves. To be even clearer, I think some may have missed this. I am not suggesting anyone do it, it is dumb! My point is I have been riding 16 years on the road, I ride a lot and in all conditions 365, I do not have a history of crashing bikes. The odds of me crashing at 30mph on a very short ride are very low, (not zero!) add into that, as I said I ride differently for those couple of minutes. Add in that I have all my gear on apart from a jacket, that is it and I might do this 3 times in a year on the very hottest days, it's a negligible mathematical calculated risk. I am just giving an honest answer to the question, why lie? The thing people need to understand is that the risks for new riders are MUCH higher than for someone like me with a lot of experience and a track history to calculate from!

matey, the jacket and gloves are the most important after your lid 😛 you a squid!! nah, seriously, we all do it. not so much now I'm older, but seeing as I've always ridden and not had car license, on hot days I would go without gloves and boots and occasionally, without a jacket. But I've seen such horrible injuries of friends, that I now just suck it up and wear full gear even if it hot and even if i'm travelling 300 yards

Just going to say that you're more likely to crash near Home, it's those simple Risk like not wearing a jacket is why your own street is the most dangerous. ( Those with a big yard are likely to wear zero gear riding their own property, the closer one is to home the more risk they take) Just something to think about mate, stay safe

So not really proper squiding at all then LOL ;-) I think you have mentioned in the past that you basically wear your bike jeans and boots off the bike mostly too. I wonder if you didn't if on those times that you popped to the shops that you'd go in regular jeans and trainers?

I've been riding for more than 3 years and I wanted to squid it while still on my L plates, but ultimately decided against it. I dress for a fall, not for a ride. But, I am still considering leaving my jacket behind while out for a short grocery run. What always stops me is: "what if you go down this time?"

"It's better to sweat than bleed." - I like that, I'm borrowing it haha. My ride home tonight was a warmun but you wouldn't catch me without gear.

Interestingly, all the new tarmac here seems to be made out of multiple different shades of tarmac (probably due to recycling). But it also helps with the "mirroring" that pure black tarmac does in the summer heat.

I picked up a lovely rst vented jacket leather + textile combo it's the best thing to wear on them super hot days basically all your hard points are leather and well padded with sliders but everywhere else is thin textile and flows air beautifully.

I like wearing full kit, but am very grateful to have more urban kit like riding jeans and biking trainers... they make summer riding better and less hassle to gear up for... but I still squid on occasion, it feels odd just being in Levis and trainers and a t-shirt/hoody, so these days it'll only be a short run to the shops etc... statistically we are most likely to crash within 3 miles from home or work though, so it is a bad idea. I am comparatively very new to the urban kit, but it is so comfy these days, there is no reason to not have it and wear it... Although cost is a thing and a lot of new riders have already spent more than they can afford on PCP deals on new 125cc bikes so can't afford anything more than a cheap helmet and some dodgy gloves off Amazon that would not be any good on a bicycle.

I used to ride in normal jeans, trainers, and t -shirt when I was younger, on 50cc's 125cc's all the time. Since having my full bike licence, I haven't riden once without all my gear.

The limit of my squiding is wearing regular jeans for short rides. I could still just about ride with shredded legs?

Get yourself a mesh jacket, complete game changer for me as I will never ride without full kit. I got myself a Frank Thomas one and it's made a huge difference to my comfort in the heat, they are on sale at J&S for £100 at the moment.

@nowillnoway
@nowillnoway Месяц назад
Had my bike a year next week, haven't ever gone squid mode, though two things in my favour. I've had the resources to invest in a mesh jacket - while still not entirely 'comfortable' it's much nicer in the heat. I also spent years as a sailing instructor, so baking in the sun with no escape during summer heat has just always been something I'm used to. I think that first one is the big one; the younguns on the 125s have already had to invest in the gear they do have, and have (probably sensibly given our climate) chosen to invest first in the cooler weather gear. Asking them to invest in a full 'other' set of summer gear "for the one week of summer we get" feels excessive (to them, on their income). By the time you're getting into bigger bikes the financial situation tends to be sorting itself out a bit more, and investing a few hundred quid on gear that keeps you safe (and therefore able to work/earn/whatever) seems more reasonable.

I refuse under any circumstance to look like im about to race on a motogp track power ranger look. I'm all urban, textile jacket, mybe kevlar waterproof hoodie, leather gloves with palm slider, textile pants or kevlar jeans and mid hi steel toe caps even going down to the shops next door. That reminds me I need to clean and grease my hard to shift gear shifter.

First and only time I ever went squid, that's to say I just didn't wear my jacket just a tshirt. still had my summer gloves, boots, textile legs etc... and I get stopped by the police. They were parked up having a milkshake, and I rode past, saw them immediately check me and then follow me into a retail car park. I parked up in a bay, and they had already stopped right behind me. Initially give me a bit of an attitude but being an older rider, they changed when I took the helmet off and they saw the beard, to 'just wanted to check your bike is ok, looks like the chain was a bit loose'. If I was young, I'm pretty sure they were going to give me the talk about the birds and bees of riding motorcycles.

@@spicy110 Sadly I see 2 or 3 a week riding s-box pit bikes, usually on the pavement or down the middle of the road. 😒 Has the eBike mentality destroyed the way ICE bikes are approached? Without trying to sound old AF, "in my day" ICEs were approached with respect in the understanding that they can be dangerous. No-one gives a sh!t on eBikes/Scooters, they'll ride them in swimwear.
@spicy110
@spicy110 Месяц назад
Yes! if you ride a ICE moped at 30mph with no helmet or gear people will say you are a stupid nutcase! Do the same on an illegal by definition stand-up E-scooter and it seems it is fine for everyone including 8yr old kids with no road sense to do. Sadly the only way people will learn is from the accidents and deaths. There is also a total lack of accountability and respect for people in your community and the police are too stretched to fix it. Then when they do, do something the CPS just let them all go free.

The only "squiding" I do is to my mate's house which is 3km from mine, that is the extent of what I'll allow for a calculated risk. However unlike you Spicy I don't wear any gear other than a helmet but this is my calculated risk and I'm comfortable with it.

Another great video. My son has just taken delivery of a nice brand new MT125 and wears all the gear. Ok not leathers but has armoured hoodie and jeans. I remember being 'told off' by a biker way back in the late '70s for leaving my gloves off once on a hot summer's Day. Where were you at the start of your vid? You've featured it before and I would like to go up there. At the ripe old age of 62 do you think I'm too old to do my CBT and get a 125? Don't really fancy direct access . Do actually fancy one of those Yamaha Tricity 3 wheel things as you can ride those on a car licence. Keep those vids coming.

Watched a video the other day of some genius in America trying to outrun cops plow into the back of a car at 130 mph with no gear on. Most of the video was other cops turning up to look at the guy crying on the road because pretty much all of both arms (and probably other areas not on camera) were covered in severe road rash. Of course, now his arms are probably covered in grafts from his groin, stomach and butt cheeks. It's all fun and games until you end up looking like a Cenobite's plaything.

Nothing beats T-shirt and shorts in the summer, you honestly can’t beat the breeze on you and yes I know the risks involved. What annoys me is other riders not nodding to me because of my choice of clothing at the time... it’s so pretentious, it doesn’t mean I’m any less of a biker or any lesser than them it’s ridiculous
